Help Interpreting Log/Err Messages

I've been cleaning up some communication problems and I've had some success with replacing CFL bulbs. I've narrowed down some more issues to the following two switches:

Porch Lights: 16.90.7F

Downstairs Hallway: 16.64.B8

Both are switches that have been used through several different controllers. Perhaps they need a hard reset. I don't really know how to interpret: Duplicate or ACK for a different device.

Max Hops=3, Hops Left=3 <--- Your comms look good

Possibly these devices were manually linked or in a scene at one time?

You might compare device links with ISY link table but a "factory reset" is fast and easy to recover from using "restore device."

Afterwards post back trace to see.

Try doing a factory reset on the two switches then a restore device from the ISY.

That will clean up any incorrect links in the devices.

I will try factory resets.

Also, an additional bit of information. These two devices share a two-gang box and as far as I can tell, there is nothing else on this circuit - just two sconces on the porch and a chandelier in the hallway. Each controlled by a 2476-S (not dual band). The chandelier has some CFL bulbs. But the status of those bulbs (ON/OFF) doesn't seem to affect how these devices are responding - they are at times fine and respond quickly to commands and at other times they become sluggish and lose connectivity to the controller. So it definitely seems like a communication issue, but doesn't behave the way my other CFL bulb-related problems did. I will swap those bulbs for LEDs regardless, but I don't have faith that it will fix the problem.

Last data point - these switches have worked well for a very long time. One has been acting up over the last month or so; the other only since I changed some bulbs to LED (thereby fixing some other problems) in a nearby (but on a different circuit) room.

The Duplicate error is the result of the PLM sending a Dup PLM ACK message.  Happens on both devices.  See Blue and Red message below.  The PLM looks new from the Insteon address.   For 16.90.7F the device will not turn Off or at least does not ACK the Off command.

Same for 16.64.B8.

I think the PLM is retrying the Direct command at the same time the next Direct command is being sent.  At least I hope so as I can't remember seeing that type of PLM Dup message in the past.  Suggest waiting 10 seconds or so before issuing the next Direct command when a Direct command does not work.

LeeG,

I was trying to send direct commands in close succession when they didn't work - out of frustration. So yes, waiting might help. BUT - when the communications go bad (can't figure out what the trigger is), the programs don't run correctly. At times, the ISY shows these devices failing. When the programs fail, I'm not able to issue another command 10 seconds later. Still need to solve the communications issue.

Posted

For sure there is device response (comm) issue of some kind.   My suggestion addressed the PLM Dup message, not how to solve the response problem.   Since these devices are not I2CS there are no link records involved when using Direct commands.

Something is preventing the command from reaching device, at least as a valid Insteon command, the command is correctly received but the device will not react, or the device reacts and the device ACK does not make it back to the PLM.

If the device can be powered from an extension cord it can remain in the same physical location, connected to the same load, but powered from the PLM location.  That would tend to eliminate powerline if device continues to not respond.  If the device works the load is eliminated.

As of this morning, this is happening every time I manually turn a switch on or off? What just happened overnight??? There is a 'previous message ignored' popping up every time I touch a switch - throughout the whole house. Not just the two lights that were giving me trouble last night.

jerlands, sorry - i don't understand that. i'm a serious amateur.

are you saying that what i'm seeing is normal for when i locally control switches? and i've just never noticed it before because i haven't been following my event logs closely?

and that it's separate from my comm issues - which keep coming and going without any pattern that i've been able to observe?

When a device is operated locally it sends a series of Insteon messages.  The initial Group Broadcast message is the message ISY uses.  The other Group Cleanup Direct message and others that follow if the device is I2CS are ignored by ISY

This is not the same type Dup message produced by PLM in earlier trace.    These 'ignored' messages are normal Insteon message flow the ISY does not need and are not processed.

Thanks LeeG. I am reading through your previous posts and trying to gain a better understanding. INST-ACK means Insteon (PLM) acknowledges? I wish there was a primer explaining the logs/events. I haven't been able to find one.

Since these are all light switches, I can't plug them in to an extension cord to narrow down whether I'm dealing with a powerline or load issue. However, if my problem is with those two switches (rather than system-wide, as I feared), I can continue to work on them. I did factory resets on them last night - didn't help. I will buy LED bulbs to replace the CFLs in the chandelier this morning and will report back if that makes a difference.

AS a data point I have seen the same behavior you're talking about in my own home. Using the local paddle always operated just fine whether it was to turn the load on-off.

Ultimately other linked devices were not able to control this remote load. Later the ISY was no longer able to control the load either but always showed it was turned on-off.

The root cause was the actual switch had failed internally . . .

Replacing the switch with a newer unit solved everything for me in this case. This was one of the most frustrating times in my life as I did the whole Gong Show of replacing the load, hard resetting, air gap, confirming bridging / coupling, isolating any possible noise makers - signal suckers.

Replaced a brand new PLM with another brand new spare along with literally hard resetting my entire house! In hopes of eliminating any possibilities not done.

As you're probably aware trying to write to older Insteon devices which is part of a large scene can take hours to an entire day.

Good luck . . .

Teken,

I suspect that you are correct, and after I replace the load, my next step is to replace the switches. I have 4 new dual-band switches handy right now. I just hate to think that I'll be replacing these devices every 5 years - it's quite unaffordable!

Hello Nicole,

I agree but the silver lining is moving forward those brand new switches. If they say they operate from 100-277 VAC on the metal face plate.

They should last much longer than five years. As they have a better PSU, operating range, higher surge rating, and consume less energy when compared to previous single band units.

Trust me I know I measured it!

Ha . . .

"INST-ACK means Insteon (PLM) acknowledges?"

The PLM does send ACKs but they are generally not messages that appear in the log.  The ACKs in the event log are usually those sent from a device to the PLM.

There are many Insteon message types but only a few are seen in a normal event trace..  They are covered in various docs.  Go to

Also the information from SmartLabs is slow to reach us normal users.  Even those who pay to have access to 'Developer' information are disappointed by the information flow.  Also being a Developer requires signing a Non-disclosure agreement so forums become an issue.

Update: I removed the CFL bulbs and the problem persisted. Just replaced the Porch Lights switch with a new dual-band dimmer. So far so good. However, since the problem did occur last night with the other switch on that circuit as well, and it would be a weird coincidence if both those switches were bad, I am holding my breath.

Hello Nicole,

It does sound odd at first blush but you should keep in mind that if the electrical power in your location is less than stable. Any sort of (brown out) or technically speaking a voltage sag.

Presents more harm to electronics devices than surge events.

Keeping in mind older Insteon gear did not have a very good record for having robust power supplies with in. When these electrical conditions are present it doesn't take much for the hardware to start to fail.

Since you just purchased the new hardware they should have the 100-277 VAC rating stamped on the face of the metal frame. These should offer many years of service and be able to sustain random electrical faults seen on a yearly basis.

Thanks for the update and keep us all apprised of the final outcome.
