keribi Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 For the last few months my garage door status has been updating intermittently. Sometimes the status LED on my keypads are OFF but to my surprise the garage door is still open. I think I am just seeing another IOlinc failure. I believe every single IOlinc that I have used in the last 8 to 10 years has failed. The failure starts out slow with the sensor input not sending its status reliably and eventually total failure of the module. Relay control seems to work fine and never had comm issues in my garage area. We really need another solution for getting IO conditions into the ISY reliably other than the 2450. Hate the tiny terminals with a passion! I am thinking about putting a arduino and a PLM to use and designing my own IO insteon device with multiple inputs and outputs! Here are the programs i use for garage door control. Garage door Status - [iD 0013][Parent 0006] If Status 'Garage Door Sensor' is Off Then Set Scene 'Garage Door Status' On Else Set Scene 'Garage Door Status' Off Garage Door Control - [iD 0014][Parent 0006] If Control 'Hall Keypad G' is switched On Or Control 'Master Keypad Window - G' is switched On Then Set 'Garage Door Relay' On Else - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action')
LeeG Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 If interested in changing to a different device look at the Smartenit EZIO2X4. I've used one in a detached garage for over 5 years. It is not Dual Band but the I/O Linc is not Dual Band either. In my case the lack of Dual Band is not important because of the distance from the house. There are two Relays with built in timers and 4 Inputs. I have magnetic sensors for both fully closed and fully open positions as the doors are not visible from the house. KPL buttons show 'not closed' and 'fully open' for each door. There is a Simplehomenet (original company name) Utility (free) for setting up the timers and configuration. The Utility requires a separate PLM. The ISY supports the device as far as Scene creation, monitoring Inputs and Relay control. I have I/O Lincs as well that have not failed so no help there.
keribi Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) Thanks! I will check those out! Like the idea of magnetic sensors at both ends of door travel. (with a reliable device of course) Edited December 17, 2015 by keribi
Teken Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Just a heads up a dual band 2822-222 I/O linc is in the works from Smartlabs. There is no current ETA of its release or form factor but its safe to say it will probably use the same case as the newer On-Off Module, Range Extender, Lamp Linc, Alert Module, etc. Hopefully it will offer more features and options in the new release besides recycling a new outer case. More than likely it will lose the front convenience outlet unless they actually have the mind set to make the case thicker. If history is any indicator it will have a power draw of <.75 watts, 1000 volt surge rating. It would be really great to see a multi port like the Smartenit device form Smartlabs though.
keribi Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) Just a update on my garage door status issues! The IO linc has completely failed as of yesterday. Every IO linc i have owned in the last 5 years has failed in one way or another! Edited January 7, 2016 by keribi
larryllix Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) Just a update on my garage door status issues! The IO linc has completely failed as of yesterday. Every IO linc i have owned in the last 5 years has failed in one way or another! This sounds like a case of bad SH capacitors again. My guess is, if you have noisy power it accelerates the capacitor aging and the cheap ones they use don't stand up to absorbing more spurious waveforms. If you are handy with a soldering iron it would be worth a try replacing the caps for the cost of these things. Edited January 7, 2016 by larryllix
