famelec Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Well I hate to post on my first day, but I'm stuck already... I'm not able to set up my Insteon devices (29 of them) from the Administrative Control Screen. When I click on the Start Linking button, nothing happens. I can't enter the individual six digit address for manual set-up (I get error messages). When I click on the PLM Info/Status button on in Diagnostics, it says Not Connected. I changed Cat5 cables from the ISY994iZW to the PLM to confirm it wasn't a cable issue. I also changed from a 10 ft cable to a 3 ft cable (not real convenient) to rule out any cable length issue. The PLM lights up when plugged in. Is there anything I might be doing wrong, or do I have a PLM or ISY994i problem?
Teken Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Are you sure the Ethernet jack from the PLM is connected to the right jack?
G W Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Are you sure the Ethernet jack from the PLM is connected to the right jack?It must be or he wouldn't be able to get to the admin console. Best regards, Gary Funk
larryllix Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Use the Help|About menu pulldown and verify if your firmware matches your UI version. They must match.
Brian H Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Make sure you power up the PLM and let it initialize before powering up the ISY994i. So the PLM check can find it when the ISY994i powers up.

So the PLM check can find it when the ISY994i powers up. This didn't seem to help. I'll try it again this afternoon. Use the Help|About menu pulldown and verify if your firmware matches your UI version. They must match. The firmware and UI match, but appears to be missing the Zwave info. I have an ISY994iZW.
G W Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Put up a screen shot of the About box. Best regards, Gary Funk

Don't press any Link buttons on devices unless they are battery devices. I don't know what that "Start Linking" does and never use it

famelec Posted September 10, 2016 Author Posted September 10, 2016 OK, I figure out that I had to pay $1 to get the Zwave activated... Attached is the screen shot image of when I click on the diagnostic for PLM.
larryllix Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 If you have done the PLM first power thing and still can't get "PLM/Info connected" and you don't have any real devices connected or programs I would try a factory reset on your ISY. I am not sure how to do that anymore but it probably involves holding down the buried microbutton for a long time. EDIT: http://www.universal-devices.com/docs/production/user_guide_3.2.6.pdf Appendix B
larryllix Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 OK, I figure out that I had to pay $1 to get the Zwave activated... Attached is the screen shot image of when I click on the diagnostic for PLM. PLM and Zwave are not related but two different interfaces. PLM handles Insteon and X10, Zwave is a small PCB plugged inside on a motherboard.
Brian H Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I did a test.Power down my PLM and disconnect the serial cable from the ISY994iCycled the power to the ISY994i. The Blue RX LED is ON all the time. TX flashes occasionally.Administrative Console opens with a warning screen Your System is in Safe Mode. Are you getting the warning message and Blue RX LED On?I am trying to figure out if the PLM is not answering at all or is not responding after the originalPLM discovery.

I am trying to figure out if the PLM is not answering at all or is not responding after the original PLM discovery. I did a factory reset with no change, and also powered down both PLM and ISY, restarting the PLM first. No change. The only light that is on is the blue power light. No Blue RX light at a normal state; it only lights up when powering up. I don't get the warning message about Safe Mode. I'm thinking I either have a defective PLM or defective port on the ISY...
Brian H Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 You may want to open a support ticket. The UDI Team is top of the line when it comes to support. They maybe able to do added tests to determine if it is the PLM or ISY994i. Maybe reference this thread. http://www.universal-devices.com/contact-support/
Brian H Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 Screen shot image is attached. OK I just looked at the firmware you have installed. It is the version that will work with or with out a PLM and not generate an error on startup if no PLM is found. So a Z-Wave only system will not generate a PLM error with no PLM but still can also use a PLM for Insteon. So my thoughts are the PLM maybe bad or there is a serial port issue in the ISY994i. My bets are hedged to the PLM as they have a very poor reputation. Opening a trouble ticket with UDI will probably get you a more definite answer.

Suggested that the PLM is likely bad so I'm getting it replaced. I'll update this thread when I get it in.
famelec Posted October 1, 2016 Author Posted October 1, 2016 Well, I got a new PLM and all seems to be good now! I'll be getting everything dialed in over the next few days and weeks. I'll likely be having more questions when I run into roadblocks but all good for now. I appreciate the help!

When you replace the PLM be sure to follow the replacement instructions found here (scroll down to PLM replacement): Do not do a DELETE MODEM https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY-99i/ISY-26_INSTEON:File_Menu

My smartenit eziso8 PLM just went bad and I ordered a replacement, I cant find any instructions for that, so what do I do differently? For example it states: If you are replacing a defective PLM, choose a backup from right before the PLM died. This is a very important step I dont think thats important for smartenit Plm replacement.

pikach Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I'm not familiar with the smartenit devices. Hopefully someone can answer your question. it has nothing to do with smartenit, the point is that the plm is not the ISY plm, its a device plm.
