New Dot

I'm guessing schools don't teach sentence structure. It's just like writing code with math and operator functions. There are ORDER rules.

Short and to the point.

With the rise of Internet "journalism" comes the precipitous plummeting of the quality of same.

These new kids don't even own the AP Style Guide.

Hrmmm, I won't lie both seem OK to me. Assuming a person isn't a grammar Nazi? Given English is my second language I struggle daily in learning the nuances of the English language.

:-(   Sorry, I don't speak "Minion".  Can you try again, in Java or Python?

wy u not understands meeeeee?

New Dot is $50 but more importantly it will respond only from the closest one. Software update coming soon.

Ok, back on topic -- Any details anywhere on how the Echo determines which is closest?  Is it simply volume, or signal-to-noise ratio, or is it something more complex (such as quality of the voice matching or suchlike)?   I ask because given the placement of my two devices, I'm not sure that volume will do the right thing, but understandability of the voice certainly will improve that (specifically, you lose the high-frequency components but not the volume when sound travels through a glass door...)

Older units will be updated via a OTA firmware update. Based on the Amazon site it uses ESP to determine which one is closer and respond in kind.

Proof will be in the pudding when its actually deployed in real world use. Of concern to me is the 90 day warranty like really WTF?

I agree on the 90 day warranty. It's strange.

They do offer a 1,2,3 extended warranty though - don't know what they are asking for said privilege. I believe waiting a few months to let the full production run to wiggle out any hardware issues is prudent considering the 90 warranty period.

Like what is going to happen in 90 days or if someone doesn't use it very often?

EDIT: The extended warranty is very reasonable: 1 = $4.99, 2 = $9.99, 3 = $14.99 all of them include accidental protection and 2-3 exchange. That is pretty good value for sure even the Gen 1 offered only 1 year so for $49.XX and $14.99 = $64.98 still an amazing value.

Reading the questions from Amazon there are lots of pissed off people LOL!

The thing I am most excited about is the software update to do a better job of selecting the echo nearest the user!!  I already have 4 echos and I often get anywhere for 1-4 timers going at once because they all hear me.  Annoying.

BTW, they are giving $10 credit for people who already bought Gen1 dot (me).  Also, they give a $50 discount on a 6 pack, $250!!!  With both credits, I am getting a set of 6 for $40 each!!

Is it true this can be used without Echo?

If so, then can it then be used to command ISY? The ISY connection is just through the cloud, right?

I would not spend nearly $200 to fiddle with Alexa. But I would spend $49.

And no big plastic thing that looks like Master Cylinder, either.

What I meant is, up til now, Dot needed Echo, right? Or maybe it was just that you could only ORDER Dot through Echo? So, you could use a Dot without Echo, but you would have to find a friend with Echo to order one for you?

Can Tap be used for things other than ordering more Tide or crackers?
