Keyfob for insteon? Will Elk keyfob work?

Why on earth is there no keyfob for insteon. I would imagine most people would buy one if available. Can the Elk kefob fork to turn lights on and off or run programs? I don't have Elk yet but I imagine it is required for the keyfob to work.

I knew someone would say that. A keyfob is a remote that fits on your Keychain. Have you seen the size of the mini remote? It's almost twice the size of a typical keyfob, it's not intended for the outdoors, it is not rugged enough to use on a Keychain and for that matter there is no Keychain for it. That's why I believe they need to make one. At least I for one would love to have it.

I'd hate to compare kefob size but you have a big keyfob. Mine is smaller. Regardless of size it is not intended as a keyfob, not rugged or meant for outdoor. Show me a pic of how you are can attach the mini remote to your Keychain.

I don't use a key chain and the only keyvi carry is for the car.

The ELK keyfob will work fine as long as you have the ELK module. Just create the rules in the ELKRP software. The only thing I can't remember off the top of my head is if each keyfob buttons have to be the same or if each keyfob buttons can be different.

He doesn't have an Elk yet either so getting the Elk module for ISY won't do him much good...

Your being too literal or I assumed too much. He said he didn't have an ELK but figured he needed it to work with the Elk keyfob. So I assumed IF I posted he would know that the ELK system would be required but also the module for the ISY. Sorry if I didn't spell this out exactly perfect.

Wasn't trying to ride your butt Just wanted to kind of answer his first question and confirm for him he needs an Elk as well..

Yes I do not have elk. Was thinking about getting it. I was hoping for it to work without elk or a separate keyfob but at least if it works with elk then I'll be happy when I get it.

Gary, the "BUTTONS" are preset to work the same on ALL the FOBS. So button 1 can run any rule/setting however that button has to work the same on all the FOBS. So the buttons ALL behave the same regardless how many FOBs you have and cannot be customized per FOB. Does this make sense?

You can set any rule to any FOB button (ELK has 4)- ALL KEYFOBS buttons will work the same, the FOBS can't be customized individually.

 

So lets say you have two FOBS. Both can be setup to use any button as you wish but that button will work the same on all the FOBS. You can't have button 1 of KOB1 say turn on the lights and button 1 on FOB2 arm the alarm. The buttons all work the same on all FOBS.

 

My point is, if you want to keep a FOB in the kitchen just to do kitchen lights and then a FOB in the bedroom to do bedroom lights that wont work.

Who carries keys anymore? Just the vast population. You may use remote locks or push start cars but most people do have keys. At any rate I, if the only man on the planet that still uses key, would like a key fob so that's why I ask. If you don't want or need one then that's OK.

That being said as a security guy I do suggest most people who have an ELK have a FOB. I think its great to have when answering the door to strangers or unexpected guest, or put in main rooms so if you see someone walking in your backyard that shouldn't be. One in a nightstand by your bed so in the middle of the night its accessible. For older people have one for emergencies in case you fall and can't get up. They are useful. For actual arming/disarming of the alarm coming and going I think there are better solutions. In the past I used an IOLinc with the garage door opener to arm/disarm the garage door along with notifications and solid program.

Seems like that's my only option and when I get the ELK I will get the keyfob

I have been spending my ISY lifetime trying to get rid of keys and fobs and tracking devices and use ISY for home automation.

 

Yeah, there is still some remote control in me, 'cause I didn't think out the automation logic enough to handle every contingency yet.

 

Until then we need Fobs and work-arounds.

 

No Insteon but many other systems that can patch into ISY. I have quite a few X10 units in a box from the 80s. I did use some up until about this year.

 

For a vehicle you want a longer range too. Insteon RF hasn't been that good on some distances for me.

Seems like that's my only option and when I get the ELK I will get the keyfob

I have four of them and the problem I see is the lack of security. If my kid loses it anyone can use it.
