Buy new PLM from Smarthome or Amazon?

a new PLM from smarthome is $87.65 including shipping.

a new PLM from Amazon is $64.25 including shipping.

Would anyone suggest spending the extra TWENTY BUCKS to buy it from smarthome?  Does anyone want to share any theoretical advantage to doing so?  Perhaps one seller tends to ship older units?

I bought mine from Amazon and Amazon was the seller and shipper. It was out of stock when I first looked. They got more directly from Smarthome. So  I know it was the latest at the time of placing the order.

I don't know about the Amazon Marketplace vendors as I understand they sell through Amazon. For some Amazon ships for them. Some ship from their own locations. I personally would no use a Marketplace Vendor as they are responsible for any issues and if the stock they have is current.

As Brian noted if you look at who the vendor is you can't go wrong saving $20.XX if it's coming direct from SH anyways.

If it's from a third party vendor you take a chance and gamble of getting older firmware / hardware that doesn't address the capacitor issue and removing the ALL ON / ALL OFF command set.

How will I know if I have a older or the newer firmware and capacitor issue when I get the unit?

Look at the sticker(s) on  the PLM, and the info given in the ISY console. There is a post with a chart and updates. I'll post a link in a sec...

Is that the revision of the FanLinc on the sticker or the version reported by the ISY?

All the 2413S PLMs that are hardware 2.0 and above. Have the updated power supply.

The one I have is Hardware 2.1 with Firmware reported in PLM Info/Status is 9E.

I have see recent posts indicating Hardware Revisions above 2.1.

The link in post #6 has the thread on PLM versions in it.

someguy: we don't know - examination of one of the newer PLMs shows that it still does not use the normally-required "low-esr" capacitors.  they may last longer, but it's also possible they too will fail due to the same problem.  you're best off just planning for a replacement every two years.  As one forum member put it (apologies for not recalling who it was), think of the PLM as a two-year lease.

Brian H:

So are you saying that a PLM that is v2.0 or higher should not need to be replaced in the foreseeable future?

Any 2413S PLM made today will have the capacitor upgrade in place. It will also have the ALL ON / ALL OFF command set removed in hopes of addressing that specific issue. Whether or not the hardware lasts much longer than two years is unknown as there haven't been too many in the field to know.

One user did report back that he had a 2.XX fail but given the amount of hardware sold that isn't even 0.000001%. Please update the forum members as to the hardware revision and ISY firmware when you get yours.

The one I got today from Amazon says v2.2

Awesome, when you enroll the new unit please let us know what the ISY indicates as the firmware for the unit. As an aside best practice is to take a label and mark down the install date. You will then know exactly when the unit was first plugged in and deployed.

I got my PLM from Amazon and it was made about four months ago and it is version 2.2 so I would conclude that others should consider buying theirs from Amazon unless they feel they may need support directly from Smarthome.
