ISY994 can't determine insteon engine - trying to install leak sensor

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am a bit of a novice with Insteon and ISY994 but I have it setup with all (5) insteon lights and it's working no problem.  I want to add a leak sensor which I just got and following the instructions from here (https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY-99i/ISY-26_INSTEON:Linking_a_Leak_Sensor) but it's failing with ISY994 can't determine insteon engine.

I have read a bit about the error and I think I am doing everything right (clearly not!).

I wanted to check that I am following the right steps:

1. I am selecting new insteon device from the ISY994i console.  I then enter the address (which is the IP of my ISY), a name i give the sensor, and select 10.08 for the type.

2. I then press and hold the button on the leak sensor till it flashes and once it does I click it once more and it starts to flash more rapidly.

3. The ISY is searching for devices to link, but then fails with the message (can't determine insteon engine).

Question - I've tried both but just want to make sure - should I be doing this when I am standing close to the ISY unit or to one of my other insteon switches?

Here is the log from my Event viewer level 3 (as I saw that was requested from other threads that people had similar issues).

OPTION 1:

1. Press the two colored yellow / blue *whirling arrows* at the top of the admin console.

2. Press the set button on the leak sensor until it starts to blink & flash.

3. Select finish on the pop up message and let the system enroll the new leak sensor.

4. Once added to the device tree on the left you can group all the nodes by right mouse clicking and select group.

5. Once grouped you can change the name to match your use case: Kitchen, Fridge, Sink, Toilet.

OPTION 2:

1. Press the light bulb icon at the top of the admin console.

2. Enter the MAC address labeled on the bottom of the sensor ie: 21.AE.4B

3. Name it for what ever use case / area / zone / appliance.

4. Device Type: Leave this to auto discover

5. Press OK and let run . . .

Thanks Teken that worked. I was not putting in the MAC address which was messing things up.

I now just need to figure out how to make the sensor do what I want!

What would you like it to do?

- Send you an email when there is a water leak detected?

- Turn on another linked Insteon device like a lamp, radio, strobe, etc?

The sensor does not have a MAC address, it has an Insteon ID.
