kzboray Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I was in a friends new home the other day and he was very excited to show me what he had done for lighting control. When he had started the build process we had discussed options and I really just forgot about it until I was in the home last week. He decided to install all z-wave switches throughout the home. It's approximately 100 switches. The home is 2400 sq/ft and has an AP at both ends. Signal strength is at its worst 79db. When I press a switch there was noticeable lag (sometimes almost a full second) between the key press and the lights coming on. I have worked predominantly with Insteon and never had anything remotely like this happen. Is this the norm for z-wave.
stusviews Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Z-Wave device are not currently scene capable using the ISY. Programs introduce an inherent delay. My understanding is that Z-wave scenes will be implemented in version 5+, currently in Alpha. If you want/need quicker response, then you'll need a Z-Wave controller (other than the ISY Z-wave module).

My condo is larger than your friend's and I have around 50 Zwave devices with no lagging response.
vjk Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 It's unclear what you mean. If you mean that the light comes on after you press the button on a switch directly connected to the light, the delay may be due to the dimmer switching a fluorescent light on. It happens with my old fluorescent light. The zwave itself should not introduce a perceptible delay (except with locks). I see about 6-8ms round-trip time for zwave packets.
oberkc Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I have a few zwave devices that are responders to my insteon scenes. In my experience so far, there IS a delay of about a second. I assume that this is likely the result of having the ISY enforcing the scene relationship, rather than being the rwsult of direct communication between devices.

How did you get Z-Wave devices to be scene members? Are you on v5+?
oberkc Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I am not on v5.x. No. I dont think I did anything extraordinary....just righ-click>>add to scene. I assume dragging would work equally well. They can be responders only, based on my experience.
