I can and will resist the Echo Show

Having switched from Comcast to Playstation Vue (and putting FireTV devices everywhere), the FireTV gives you Alexa with a display, without the camera... I just wish it was easier to do room localization...

OT; Boy am I glad to be rid of Comcast! :)

Good decision.

Has anyone else run Wireshark and watched the traffic from the Echo? The Echo, likely the Show as well, does all its voice recognition on Amazon servers, even the trigger phrase. That means all sound above a threshold is sent to Amazon. This eliminates the need for those three letter government organizations to perform a black bag operation on your home to install wiretapping devices.

Not sure how Google Voice is implemented.

Apple devices perform speech recognition locally on the device when they switched from Nuance to their own home grown speech recognition many years ago.

I've witnessed the opposite.. whichever trigger phrase you select is dealt with locally, and nothing goes across the wire until its triggered.  You can prove this by denying the echo access to the internet, and then say the trigger phrase.. she'll will hear the phrase, turn the LEDs red and respond that she's lost her connection.

After that, only the request phrase following the trigger goes over.  I watched and logged it on my routers traffic monitor when hooking the dot up last year, the traffic going out is trivial, and associated with requests after the trigger phrase.

Then explain to me when I simply shout “Hey!” within range of the Echo that I see lots of new packet traffic from the Echo to Amazon. Perhaps it’s a failover strategy if the Echo can’t determine on its own if that was the trigger phrase. Apple poked at Amazon on stage at WWDC over this.

Ok, Interesting.  There are are very rare occasions (< 10 times since last September) where the Alexa LEDs light up in response to conversation that wasn't directed at her... typically a little louder than normal. She makes a response "boop" sound and then goes back dark. I've not found a way to recreate that so not sure about the traffic. I just tried a few louder "heys" sitting right in front of her, and nothing happend. I am not seeing a constant stream of data from her to amazon, or anywhere else.

Seemingly more on-topic, I have not resisted the Echo Show. I ordered a two-pack and am anxiously awaiting delivery. Of particular interest to me is the supposed integration with Netgear's Arlo (and Ring's) cameras. The reason I say supposed is neither company appears to be aware of Amazon's marketing prominently touting this compatibility. By some cosmic convergence, the release date of the Show devices coincides with the sundown for Sony's Dash Internet devices, two of which I have enjoyed for years. The Show does most everything my Dashes do with the addition of Alexa functionality and the camera compatibility. I'll post a review here once I've had a chance to evaluate.

I have the Sony Dash and thought the Echo Show looked very similar.  I was unaware that Sony is shutting these off so maybe I should be looking at ordering a couple Shows.  If only they were supported properly in Canada.
