jwf Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Trying to add a new ToggleLinc and I am getting the error ISY correctly identifies it as ToggleLinc Relay v.41. I get the error in the attached file either by using the "Start Linking" method or the "New Insteon Device" method. It seems odd that it would be a comms problem with the PLM trying to reach the device since it sees it immediately when I manually put the switch into linking mode. And manually linking ISY automatically sees the address of the devices and correctly identifies it as a togglelinc. I am running 4.6.2 of the firmware. Techman Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I noticed that the UI is 4.5.4 and the firmware is 4.6.2 Update the UI to 4.6.2. First be sure to first clear your java cache, including applications, then download the 4.6.2 UI Do a factory reset on the Togglelinc then install it, Let me know the results.
jwf Posted September 25, 2017 Author Posted September 25, 2017 Thanks Techman. I'll try it and let you know.
jwf Posted September 25, 2017 Author Posted September 25, 2017 Updated the UI, cleared Java cache and factory reset ToggleLinc. And initially got the error about couldn't calculate the engine version. Tried it a couple more times. I think I got out of sync with the switch linking process but then I got back to linking and manually adding and got the same error consistently now, "Failed to add device, reason 9" again. Again I doubt it is comms to the PLM because the minute I hit the set button on the switch the address shows up in the GUI everytime. The only odd thing that happened was when I was putting the switch back into the wall the breaker blew. I rechecked the wiring connections and reset the breaker and everything came on just fine accept for this linking issue. I don't think I have ever had a problem like this before with linking devices to my ISY. stusviews Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Popping a breaker when stuffing a device back into the wall box is only caused by an exposed line wire somewhere. There'll usually be a burn mark where the short occurred. The ToggleLinc is powerline only. Use an extension cord cut in half and plugged into the same outlet as the PLM to power the ToggleLinc. Any success adding it? Did you try all three methods?
jwf Posted September 25, 2017 Author Posted September 25, 2017 I didn't see any burn marks and checked all wiring and didn't see anything exposed. BTW I decided to use the Ideal push wire connectors. They all look solid and secure. I notice that it is able to determine the engine version so it is talking to the switch ok. I have another switch that I think I will try. Something tells me this is a switch issue and not a PLM or ISY issue.
Techman Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 If a circuit breaker popped when you plugged in the module then you have a problem that needs to be resolved before you even try to add the module to the ISY. Either the module is defective or there's a house wiring issue that needs to be resolved. What type of load is hooked up to the Togglelinc? Try a new module, if the problem still exists then you need to address your wiring.
jwf Posted July 21, 2019 Author Posted July 21, 2019 Had to circle back to let everyone know the result.. After trying 3 different types of switches and configurations including a dual band one in case it was a signal issue. It all resulted the same, device could not be added. Also upgrading the UI and the ISY to the same version, 4.7.3, still no success. So finally I decided to try the "plug it into another outlet using a donor power cord" method from a dead appliance I had. That did the trick I was able to add the switchlinc and the ISY can now control it's on and off where it is installed. Someone else on the forum made the comment about linking comms seems to be more sensitive than controlling comms and that appears to be the case. Well at least the switchlinc I installed in this place is a dual band that will help the rest of the network if in fact that was the issue. Another thing I discovered was that I couldn't update the device but when I plugged my dual band range extender I could communicate. I thought the dual band in the switch would be communicating with the dual band PLM but apparently not. Or maybe it couldn't between the floor where the PLM is and the floor where the switch it.

Thanks for the follow up. RF and powerline signals can be complex and results aren't always explainable. Its half field engineering and half luck... = whatever you get to work is the best thing Paul

The plugin modules are more effective as their RF antennas are located externally vs. an in the wall module which usually has the antenna located at the rear of the device so it's RF signal less effective. Based on your results it appears that the two legs of you powerline are either not bridged or you have something creating noise on the powerline that's located on the same circuit as your switchlinc. You may want to try using either two lamplincs or two on/off modules to bridge both sides of your powerline. These newer modules have improved firmware and hardware which should help improve the reliability of your Insteon network.
jwf Posted July 22, 2019 Author Posted July 22, 2019 Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the Lamp Linc idea.
