Thermostat Status Display in Console

I know this has come up before, couldn't find a clear answer in 'search'.

I installed a wireless Insteon thermostat a couple of days ago.  It is working fine, but the admin console status display is still blank.

Best fix for this?

Thanks.

The ISY Series Controller will only display the reading once the TSTAT has changed its state. If its plugged in the device will report its temp more frequently vs based on XX threshold.

Lastly, if you ever reboot the ISY Series Controller that state is lost each time . . .

This is an unfortunate characteristic of Insteon thermostat.

"cooling" and "heating" are not a "State" of the thermostat.  They are "control" communications issued by the thermostat upon entering the heating state or cooling state.

In other words, they are not considered a "state" at all by the thermostat.  So you can't query them.

ISY calls them a "state", because, frankly I don't know what else to call it, but it is really the value of the last recevied communication from the thermostat as to whether it turned on/off the AC compressor or turned on/off the heating element (or whatever it is that heats you).

Actual thermostat "states" include

1) mode (heat/cool/auto/program)

2) fan mode (auto/on)

3) cool temp

4) heat temp

From an Insteon command perspective, "heating" is like a "control on" from a switch.  It is only a command issued at the time of the button press.

I've tried everything.  It's been in and working great for several days.  Changing temperatures, changing setpoint, changing mode, etc. etc.  Still blank

That is a good thread, found it the other day.  I'll look in more detail.  Thanks.

NP, more specifically it talks about how if the Internal vs External sensor is used. I have to gather you're using the OEM internal thermister inside the unit. As a quick test bring the TSTAT to a Insteon dual band unit. Warm up the unit with what ever method you deem appropriate and report back if the ISY Series Controller reflects that change.

If it doesn't you can try hard resetting it and add it back to the controller to see what happens. You have a 50/50 chance of fixing it or it remaining the same.

Internal sensor.  Temperatures are definitely changing since it is cycling the fireplace off and on perfectly.  I guess I might have to re-install it.  Ugh.

Example:

your thermostat is set to cool at 74 and you just booted your ISY so all the "cooling/heating" stuff is blank and the current temp is 73.

Now the temp rises to 75.

=> the thermostat starts to cool

=>thermostat broadcasts a "cool on" comm

=>ISY populates the heat/cool state as "cooling"

=>ISY puplates the cool control as "on"

Now the temp drops to 73

=> the thermostat shuts off the compressor

=>thermostat issues a "cool off" comm

=>ISY populates the heat cool state as "idle"

=>ISY ppulates the "cool control" as "off"

Since you have not done any heating yet,

"heat control" is still blank.

Of note: if a comm is missed, ISY will be wrong and no amount of querying will change that.  The only way to fix it is to change the temp to force the AC or heat to kick on/off and send a new control comm.

More specifically complete a hard reset and you can always just use *Restore Device* which doesn't lose anything. If that doesn't work complete the hard reset again and delete the device and add it back.

Since it is a fireplace application I'm not using any cooling.  I'll put it in heat/cool and warm it to force it into cooling and see if that fixes it.  I have another one that I'm using heat/cool and it works fine.

If the "heat cool state" box is blank despite the thing cycling on/ff the actual heat, then you have a comm issue.  Either there as in issue with the thermstat/plm having the proper links or it just isn't getting the comm.

My experience with the wireless TStat is that it works as it should, but in the admin console or the UDAjax, it doesn't always show the correct state.

For example:  If I query the wireless TStat, I loose the Heat/Cool State and the Status (both blank).  I can see that the Fan Setting, Humidity, Thermostat Mode and Heat Setpoint.

No matter, even if the admin console and UDAjax are not updated instantly, the TStat functions correctly.  In the winter I use it for heat with an On/Off module connected to an oil filled heater and in the summer I use the same On/Off module for my dehumidifier.  With heat I use a scene and with dehumidifier, I use a program.

Now as far as the wired TStat is concerned, it updates almost instantly when queried.  BTW, I also have a wired TStat fed with a 24VAC wall wart and it also updates almost instantly.

Hope that helps,

P.S.  There is something that will fix the updates, but I don't recall what I did.  I may have either cycled power the ISY or the TStat.  Either way, eventually it ends up going back to the very slow updates.  I just queried my wireless TStat about 30 minutes ago and it still hasn't updated!!!

I have three Insteon wireless thermostats. Two of them work just fine. The last one I purchased about three months ago went through two returns Because they would not display the temperature in the ISY.

The third one they sent still would not work. By the way I tried all of the suggestion listed above to get all three to work. I finally kept The third one because the heating and cooling status would update in the ISY. I use those values in a program to control what I need done.
