Dimming lights

Received a Google Mini for Christmas. Purchased and installed the Portal module on my ISY994i and linked the two together successfully. I have some issues with room naming / device naming that I see others are having - so I'm following those threads.

One issue I don't see - and sorry if I missed it - is dimming. On one of the final screens of the install process, and in the wiki, it states that dimming is possible by saying something like, “Hey Google, set family room light to 50%”.... Well, I've tried every variation of that I can think of and my mini always replies with, “It looks like those lights haven't been set up yet, just open Google Home control....” - even though the mini will turn them on or off without issue....

Is it possible to dim lights?

Note that the lights in question are connected to an Insteon 2447d dimmer switch, and dimming works with the UDI applet on my PC's and iPads....

Thanks, John.

I don't have a Google Home, so I can only offer what works with the Echo. There may be a similar setup for Google.

Echo has what's called "groups." This is for the computer group, not the smartphone group (they're somewhat different). Create unused spokens for both the scene and devices (e.g., LR Device, LR Scene). Add both to a group. Name the group an appropriate spoken (e.g., living room light).

Edit: misspell correction.

Do you have the spoken assigned to a device, or a scene?

In the portal - is the device exposed to Google as a light, or a scene?

I am having the same issue right now.  on/off work just fine,  just can't dime any lights via google home.

The light is controlled by a 2577d Dimmer Switch, so I assigned it as a switch...

What does the ISY Portal list the ‘ISY Cat’ as?

In my case, all are ‘Scene’ - and my ‘GH Cat’ is ‘Device\Light’. I cannot dim anything, but that’s expected since ISY Scenes are not dimmable via direct dim commands.

As I mentioned - I usually just assign spokens to Scenes - so I've never expected those to be dimmable...  I do know that dimming used to work with discrete devices though. Just to test, I created a test device - linked to a device (not a scene) and pushed to Google Home as a light.

I could turn it on or off - but could not get any dim commands to work.

Something is definitely borked in the API interaction...

I either get 'Sorry, I'm not sure how to help with that' or 'It looks like that device hasn't been setup yet'...

I believe switch can only be turned on or off. It needs to be light.

What is the ISY Cat?

I changed the switch designation to light and unlinked, then relinked the mini to update the devices. No change: On/Off is fine, but dimming doesn't work.

I have a lamp plugged in to a receptacle that is dimmable via the ISY app, so I assigned it as a receptacle to the mini. Same thing, On/Off works but dimming does not.

I see from other respondents below that others are having the same issue. I guess On/Off will have to do....

Thanks for trying to assist

Please can you state what 'ISY Cat' shows in the ISY Portal for the device?

I've tested the correct setup (ISY Dimmable Device exposed to Google Home as a 'Light') - and it still does not work. So, I believe that there is an issue in the interaction between Google Home and ISY Portal. However, I do want to ensure you are trying to dim a device and not a scene...

The dimming problem is fixed.

You will have to re-SYNC, as the issue was in the SYNC process.

You can push it from ISY Portal, or just ask "Ok google, sync my devices"

This is a problem that was introduced in the last update, in relation to color bulb support.

MWareman: Yes, my ISY Cat is Device...

bmercier: Did the sync, and all working fine now - Thanks!

BTW, I have switches assigned as switches and receptacles as receptacles and where the device (switch or receptacle) is dimmable, they work just fine when asking to dim - so they don't need to be a light... Thanks for all the help

In what specific version has this been fixed ? I'm trying the same exact thing and somehow my Google Mini seems to be lost when I tell it to "Set basement office light to 50%". On/off works just fine though...

"Basement office" is a scene exposed as a light/device in the portal. (I need it to be a scene otherwise I dont think the keypads/non-load dimmers would have the correct states - Or do I ?)

Running 5.0.11B (I wanted to play with the new stuff  )

Only a device can be dimmed, unless you categorize a scene as a light in the portal.

It’s a server side fix. Nothing needs updating client side.

Also, insteon scenes cannot be dimmed to specific levels. Only devices.

FYI, Even if an ISY scene is exposed as a GH light, it can't be dimmed.

Thanks for the update. I'm awaiting a GH and now know what to avoid. Great frustration saver B)

So, then, how do I make the multiple keypadlincs react to a light being on (or dimmed) by GH ? Also, I can dim scenes from Mobilinc, why is this not possible with GH ?

Posted

Mobilinc sends ‘bright’ and ‘dim’ commands (such as are send from Switchlincs when you hold them) and Google Home can do the same - to progressively brighten or dim the scene members.

Mobilinc can not send ‘turn scene on at 50%’ because this command isn’t supported in the Insteon protocol. Neither can Google Home.

I use programs to sync the KPL buttons to a device state for the couple of lights I want to be able to dim with Google Home.
