smokegrub
As you can tell by this post, I am slow to transition to new technology. I am now seriously considering adding the Echo, primarily for the purpose of controlling Insteon devices and programs using verbal commands. My question is this, have you found your system easy to set up but, more importantly, does it execute commands with few, if any, problems? I have KPLs at convenient locations around the house but there are times when my hands are full or I am seated, hat a verbal command would be very useful. I would appreciate your feedback. stusviews
Most of our KPLs are gathering dust. We use voice for nearly everything that can be controlled by the ISY, that includes devices, scenes and even programs. The original installation is a bit involved, here's a link to the Wiki. You'll find that the Echo sometimes doesn't understand what you said, but that's true of people, too. There's a lot you can do, but that's way too lengthy to post. It's best if, after installation, that you ask specifically. A quick tip: Voice commands do not run program conditions, On runs Then and Off runs Else. But you can have Then run a program's conditionals. If (leave blank) Then Run program x Link to comment

GlowingHair
I have various Echo devices throughout the house and I love them. The issue I have is specific to me and my location: sometimes my Wi-Fi is a bit flaky, so commands won't go through if she can't hear me. That's when it pays to have sharp elbows to hit the right KPL button. Link to comment

Teken
My thanks to all. Will make the purchase and get started. If you want the best value purchase the $49.00 Dot as the process is exactly the same to setup regardless of the hardware. If and when you're satisfied I would encourage you to purchase the larger Echo Plus as this offers direct ZigBee control of Phillips Hue lighting hardware. Going this route allows you to have X-10, Insteon, Z-Wave, and ZigBee. Once the Echo Plus supports more ZigBee enabled devices this will be my next home automation purchase. Link to comment
stusviews
The Echo Dot is bargain priced now for just 30 bucks. Or you could opt for a refurbished Dot at $45 Link to comment
