EZIO 2x4 is noisy

Hello,

I noticed my Insteon network seems very busy.  Things have gotten a bit slow and I'm getting more misfires.  I noticed that on my Isy repeaters the status light seemed to blinking constantly.    I checked my event logs only to find that an Ezio 2x4 I set up a couple of months back has gotten really noisy.  It seems to generate some traffic every few seconds as show in the log below.  All I have set up on the Ezio is two dry contacts, one to a door contact and the other to my UPS, and each of these are members a scene.

Device 3d.ce.1b is the Ezio.  I tired resetting the Ezio 2x4 back to factory defaults and setting up again but it didn't solve the problem.  Why is my Ezio so noisy and what can I do in order to resolve this?

Thanks,

Simon

Are you using the Opto-Isolated  I1-I2 Inputs or the I3-I4 Digital Inputs ?

You mentioned in your other thread I1 & I2.

If the I3 and I4 Digital Inputs are not connected to anything.

On the chance noise is getting into the Digital Inputs.

You may want to put a pull up resistor from I3 to 5 volts and I4 to 5 volts. 10,000 Ohms should be fine or try I3 and I4 tied back to ground.

I believe under the old name. Simplehomenet they said ground to keep out electrical noise triggering the digital inputs.

Hi Brian,First let me say thanks for responding to my question in both this thread and my initial set up thread, I really appreciate it.  To answer your question I am only using the opto isolated inputs.  Specifically here is how I have the door contact and UPS set up:

- 5v terminal is connected to i1+ and i2+
- Door Contact connected to i1- and GND
- UPS Output Relay connected to i2- and GND

I think this set up matches up with you detailed in my previous post.   I did notice one GND connection was loose, which I fixed.  Not sure if that would cause any issue like this. After I plugged the EZIO in I tested operation (opening/closing door contact, triggering the output relay via software) and things worked as expected.   I also checked the event viewer again and it still chattering away and the event log streams by with events from the EZIO.

I am going to try getting my hands on a 10K resistor to test connecting I3 and I4 like you suggest to see if this cancels out the noise.   I trust this goes from 5v to the positive I3 and I4?

Yes +5 to I3 and I4.

You should be able to connect I3 and I 4 to ground .

Either way should keep the I3 and I4 from floating and picking up random electrical noise. Triggering them randomly On and Off.

Hey Brian,

After I sent my last reply to this thread I got thinking about the noise issue and how it might be occurring.   The EZIO is connected to a old power bar behind my little server rack and I thought either the old power bar or other equipment might be introducing noise.  So I got an extension cord and plugged into a outlet in a different room and tried connecting the EZIO to it.  Doing so moved the EZIO about 1ft from its original location.  After plugging it back in then doing a query o the device to make sure it was operational, I checked the logs and found the EZIO was no longer noisy.  I then connected the extension cord to my power bar and witnessed the same thing.  I thought this meant the physical location was probably the issue.  Just to make sure, I remove the extension cord and plugged the EZIO back into it's original spot.  It did not resume being noisy,  and my whole theory was shot. However that's good news as the device is working properly for now.

In the meantime I am going to find some 10K ohm resistors to have on hand to try the other solution in case the problem returns.  I am bit baffled as to why it just stopped being noisy, since nothing has really changed but I'm glad its working like it should at the moment.  Thanks again for your help!

simonsez,

Just as Brian has detailed unused inputs need to be terminated ( pulled up or down).

I believe your captures indicate that Inp4 (the "C") in the address is noisy.
