Hi Everyone,

I've read alot, but first time posting. I have seen several of you have mentioned how you can create 4,5,6,7,8 button keypads. I think I understand on the ISY side how to do it, but I'm more curious on the actual keypads how you did it. I tried putting a 2 button button on top of two individual ones on the keypad and it got jammed. Do I need to modify the buttons or the keypad at all for this to work? A short how to on the back end as well as the physical side would be highly appreciated.

We are tying this system with RTI and have finished programming the RTI side, just need to finish up the ISY side in order to finish the job!

On a side note, ISY ties really well into RTI and has almost no lag in terms of lighting control as well as running macros from RTI. Single, Double and Press n Hold all work!

Welcome to the forum.

The Insteon keypads are sold as either 6 button or 8 button. Smarthome sells kits that can convert an 8 to a 6 and a 6 to a 8.

In addition to the buttons the kits include underlying framework. In addition to the physical modifications the keypads need to be programmed to reflect the change. The info is included in the keypad manual.

This is in reply to stusview:

"I use KPLs to create 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 device controllers. That's possible because large KPL button fits well over two small buttons. Just create scenes that include the pair of buttons as controllers of the same scene. Depending on the configuration, a button pair is also set to be On-only or Off-only."

I know how to convert them between 6 and 8.

My question is different, some of you have mentioned you created keypads with 4 buttons. I'm looking to see how it was done.

If you put the large button covers over a pair of button on the keypad you could then write a program to do whatever if either of the two buttons under the large cover were pressed.  You still might have to modify the framework under the buttons.

I tried putting the large button on but it would get jammed. I'll take one apart today and see if doing it out of the keypad and then mounting it makes a difference. The programming side I got down and it works as expected. I'll see what I can come up with taking it apart.

Take  a look at this

What you want to do may not be possible as the underlying frame may not support the large buttons in the middle rows

I used to be on this and the smarthome forum all the time, been off for a while. What you are describing has been done by stusviews and some others. For example, 4 large buttons. I don’t recall much in the way of modification to get the large button to fit across two smaller ones, but maybe some shaving of the frame was needed. I’m going to try to find the thread for you, but I looked briefly the other night and could not. I think there was cross-linking of the adjacent buttons.  Maybe one was a controller and the other a responder

One issue was the backlights. There would be an unlit area in the center of the button.

keep working on it, it has been done so you can do it again.

Definitely will keep going at it, promised my client the 4 buttons so now can't go back. He's aware of the middle not being lit, not a major deal. It sure would be nice if insteon created this. They have everything their disposal to create it!

Hey Eric,

Thank you for that! I literally just finished playing with a keypad. I took it apart and remove the center square that is in the buttons. The I cut one of the two tabs holding the individual 3.4.5.6 buttons and put a large button on top. It works, however one limitation is the following. Buttons 1 and 2 as well as 7 and 8 have their micro momentary buttons positioned left and right. Where buttons 3,4,5,6 have it positioned ontop of each other down the middle. While it works, the feel is no as solid as compared to having large buttons on the top and bottom. In going to keep playing to see if I can improve tactile feedback.

Thank you again for your investigation!
