Got2Have Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 I have only one home automation hub, the ISY 944i ZW IR PRO. The version of my ISY firmware is v.4.7.3 and UI is v.4.6.2. The Z-Wave version is v.4.55. I'm not sure these are the current versions. I just bought my first Z-Wave device, the Kwikset Convert 914C. I have searched the forum and learned about the communication issues battery powered Z-Wave devices incur. So I moved the device next to my ISY. Since I had no other hubs or Z-Wave devices enrolled in the ISY, I selected Z-Wave | Add Device from the admin console's menu. I pressed the A button on the new device and the ISY immediately recognized it as "ZW002_1 - Kwikset Door Lock". I manually rotated the turn shaft and the status changed from "Unlocked" and "Locked" depending on the direction I rotated the shaft and the status light changed color appropriately. Then I clicked the "Lock" button in the admin console and the turn shaft rotated, beeped, and status light blinked red. The status changed to "Jammed" and continued to display "Jammed" regardless if I manually turned the shaft or clicked on the "Unlock" button. However, the "Query" button reset the status to "Unlocked" and the status light blinked green. Since I couldn't find any documentation, I opened a support ticket with Kwikset. I then remounted the device to the door and, as expected, the admin console could not find the device. The common solution is to add a range extender. I would rather not want to resort to plugging extenders all over the house that makes it obvious that I am having communication problems with my smart house. I would rather install a Z-Wave switch or outlet close to the door lock to solve the range issue. The lock for the front door is located in the foyer and there are 4 switches within a couple of feet and an outlet about 6 feet from the lock.
asbril Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 This is a recurring topic in this forum. Many people have an Insteon setup with the door lock as their only Zwave device and indeed you can get communication issues if the lock is at a distance from the ISY. I agree with you that the Zwave repeaters are not the ultimate solution and I suggest that you either get one or more Zwave switches strategically placed in between the ISY and the lock or, if you want a more simple and quicker solution, get a few plug-in modules such as the Inoveli or Leviton, or any other Zwave Plus plug-in. Once in place, do a Zwave Heal (Menu : ZWAVE - TOOLS - HEAL) and you should be set.
Got2Have Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 Thanks for your response. On a hunch, I moved the ISY from the basement to the family room on the 1st floor. I plugged it in a spare port on my Asus RT-AC1900 router. I reopened the admin console on my computer in the basement and was surprised the lock device was recognized and reported that the deadbolt was locked and alarm was manually locked. I manually unlocked the door and the status had changed to unlocked and manually unlocked. I then opened the door and clicked the "Lock" button from the console and the status changed to locked and remotely locked. However, nothing happened when I clicked the "Unlock" button. The event viewer reports an ACK after each communication event. This doesn't surprise me because when I paired and tested the lock, it was about a foot away from the ISY and there was no response to the Unlock command. I have already created a support request from Kwikset.
lilyoyo1 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Part of your problem may also be the fact that your firmware and UI do not match. Remove the lock from your Isy, clear your Java cache (make sure you use the proper admin console link) and then re-add it to your Isy.
Got2Have Posted October 2, 2018 Author Posted October 2, 2018 Should I update the firmware for the ISY and Z-wave?
dbuss Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Should I update the firmware for the ISY and Z-wave? If you want keep your ISY firmware where it is, all you need to do is update the UI.Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk

Got2Have Posted October 6, 2018 Author Posted October 6, 2018 I cleared the Java Cache and upgraded the UI to v4.7.3, thus matching the firmware. I have not created any scenes or programs that include the lock. I was unable to remove the lock using the Z-Wave | Remove. I got an Error 3. So I deleted the lock from the ISY, closed and reopened the console. I placed the lock next to the ISY and when I pressed the lock's A button and used the Z-Wave | Add option and it showed up in the ISY. Even though the lock is physically within inches of the ISY and I replaced the original batteries with new Duracell, I still get the same results. The ISY correctly shows the status when I manually lock or unlock the device. The lock responds to the ISY "Lock" command and I hear something turning. The status in the ISY changes to "Jammed" but I think this is because the lock is not upright and in its housing. The lock properly throws the deadbolt in the locked position when it is properly installed on the door. However, the lock does not respond to the ISY "Unlock" command no matter where the lock is located. The Event Viewer shows an ACK for every command that is sent by the "Unlock" command but the lock does not respond. I think I have a bad lock and will return it to Home Depot tomorrow. I'll try another, maybe with a different finish to see if that makes a difference. Thanks for everyone's help.
