Climate values into Variable

I recall seeing a topic about getting climate value as in rain today into a variable.  The method used the rest interface to loopback ip address 127.0.0.1 and a port (can' t remember it).  Can't locate post   now and think it may have even been in the wiki.  Did I dream this?    Don't want to waste bunch of time it others know this is not possible.

Oh, I'm using 4.7.3 making my way to 5.0.1x. but want to do this now if possible.
