Climate values into Variable

I recall seeing a topic about getting climate value as in rain today into a variable.  The method used the rest interface to loopback ip address 127.0.0.1 and a port (can' t remember it).  Can't locate post   now and think it may have even been in the wiki.  Did I dream this? :-)   Don't want to waste bunch of time it others know this is not possible.

Oh, I'm using 4.7.3 making my way to 5.0.1x. but want to do this now if possible.
