NJBILLT Posted July 2, 2019 Share Posted July 2, 2019 I asked a question yesterday and got a lot of good advice, so I'm hoping someone can offer some expertise here. I am switching from Homeseer 2 with a basic ISY Insteon and X-10 only box. I currently have a 2413U PLM. Is there a way to use that so I don't have to buy the 2413S. I'm thinking a RS232 adapter with FTDI chipset? Any advise appreciated. Link to comment
paulbates Posted July 2, 2019 Share Posted July 2, 2019 I don’t know how to do that. I sold my 2413U on the homeseer board and bought a 2413s. There may be a sale this week, I haven’t looked. Also from my note yesterday, you don’t want to do this ‘big bang’. Run both side by side and migrate scenes and make new ISY programs one room / function at a time at a pace that you can manage as you learn. Pail Link to comment
mwester Posted July 2, 2019 Share Posted July 2, 2019 A USB-to-Serial adapter won't do the job -- USB requires a connection to a host, and the PLM is an endpoint, not a host. I explored the use of a Raspberry Pi as a communications relay back when I had need to view the data-stream and timing between the PLM and the ISY. It works, but it's really quite the wrong way to do it. Given that PLMs self-destruct after two years, it's not a bad idea to buy a new one, especially if you've had that USB one plugged in for a year or so already. Link to comment
NJBILLT Posted July 2, 2019 Author Share Posted July 2, 2019 I actually have access to a spare 2413U from my brother-in-law, so my plan was to keep both running, (if I can adapt to the 2413U) register all the devices on ISY and migrate several events at a time. A cursory look at my HS shows about 25 Insteon devices registered, and about 20 X-10 addresses in use. Of course, and one of the reasons I've been reluctant to switch is I also have dozens of virtual X-10 addresses being used by some of Jon's HS plug-ins. Frankly, his plug-ins give more function to HS than the app itself, but I digress. I'll have to find another way to fill that void. I did use a serial to USB adapter for my RCS RS485 thermostats with HS, and that worked flawlessly for years. They aren't that expensive. I may just roll the dice and try it. Link to comment

I've had amazing luck with my 2413U. It's been at least 5 years. I did notice on their Amazon listing: "New revision (2.3) addresses issues with hardware longevity" Link to comment
Brian H Posted July 2, 2019 Share Posted July 2, 2019 The 2413U will not work with an ISY994i. The ISY994i uses a serial port 2413S has to be used. The latest 2413S being sold is V2.4. A 2.5 has been received by a user here as an engineering provided module. On the Insteon web site forum. It was pointed out. There was no V2.4 2413U. As for longevity. The V2.3 2413U was supposed to have the same updates as the V2.3 2413S. So the 2413U maybe the latest revision with what they changed to make the main board improved. I keep seeing V2.3 2413S PLM modules being sold by Amazon. Even though the V2.4 has been sold by Smarthome for a long time now. Any further improvements would not go backwards on revision numbers. In the Insteon.com Forums it was reports eventually a V2.5 will be in both 2413S and 2413U modules. Link to comment

Smarthome has been shipping 2.4 at least since last year when I picked up my spare. They FIFO their inventory and is the best way to get a PLM for that reason: they go through them. Link to comment

Amazon delivered the 2413S this morning and I can confirm it is version 2.4 1017. Now all I need is my ISY Link to comment
