MS1 vs MS2 Sensetivity and Range

Featured Replies

So, here's the question: I have a location that senses vehicles approaching the garage, currently handled by an MS1.  I'd like to install an MS2 (yes, it's protected enough for the outdoor use not to be an issue) since it can be USB powered and I have nearby power, and I have another location where only an MS1 will work so I'd like to move the MS1

However, currently the range on the MS1 is a bit short, and I'm wondering if anybody can tell me if, in their experience, the MS2 is better? worse?  The range is mostly an issue when detecting a vehicle with a hot engine, so it's at least it's a large enough object, but the MS1 usually only triggers at 30' or so right now, and unfortunately SmartHome didn't publish the spec sheet for the MS2 so I can't directly compare what they say it should do.

The MS1 only has one setting for sensitivity, and its published to reduce overall sensitive by 33%, if that gives you a relative place to start.

Yeah, I knew that one already.  There's also a jumper on the MS2 that does similar.  I've heard conflicting reports about MS1 being more sensitive vs MS2 being more sensitive, and the thing is, for the MS1 they published the sensing pattern, but not for the MS2.

Most motion sensors have an average 30 foot detection range. If you want a longer range try an Infrared photo sensor. They can cover up to about 500 feet. You could couple one with s Insteon 2450 I/O Linc
