Thermostat Help - 2441TH Turns OFF Intermittently?

Very new to ISY... Pulled the plug on the Insteon Hub.

Have 2441TH online, but every now and then it will change modes to OFF.  The time will also reset to factory.

Event viewer reports CLIMD0.

 The 2441TH is V10

 I have tried these steps:

  • Deleted the device and added back in after a reboot
  • Factory reset of the device.  Added back in.
  • Checked the furnace/Tstat wiring for loose connections.
  • Even read where pushing the little black button inside the Tstat is some sort of reset.

I can't rule out tsat is bad so a new one is on order.  I am also going to add a ferrite ring/bead to the wire...

Has anyone experienced this?  Am I missing something in the ISY that I should be aware of?  Other than the thermostat the ISY/PLM is functioning fine.

Welcome to the udi forums!

There's an old,  long thread around here about this behavior of that tstat. It's a design flaw.  In some furnaces,  the gas ignitors emit noise down the 24vac lines to the tstat. The 2441 is not tolerant of furnaces that do that.

I bought 2441s for my 2 furnaces in 2012 and it was awful. 2 replacements sent with different firmware,  similar results.  It was finally blamed on my furnaces,  even though I've used 2 other automated tstat solutions with no problems... plus the original Honeywells that came with the house.

Short answer: it happened around now because you've switched from ac to heat and the ignitors are more and more active. I'd recommend getting your money back and shopping for something else.

Thanks Paul... That's all I needed to hear.  Can you recommend a reliable thermostat?  I have the ISY 994 Pro.  Would you use Z Wave?

I have had the Ventstsr colortouch family for 5 years as it's got a lot of features,   but to use it requires v5 of isy firmware and a rpi type server.

Zwave would be a good choice as its direct connect to the isy, v4 or v5 firmware.. assuming you have the isy zwave card installed

I'm partial to RCS, but others here can chime in with what they like and why.  The forum has posts on this spanning a few years,  maybe someone has links handy

Wow, I am just now experiencing the same thing with a 2441TH after two years of flawless operation. And I read the same thread regarding "gas ignitors emitting noise down the 24vac lines to the tstat." Oddly, this is just one of three gas furnaces I have (in three separate buildings) and the only tstat doing this. The furnace is indeed an electronic ignition, but so is the one in my main house. Both have worked flawlessly for two years and the one in the main house still is.

So why after two years of flawless operation should I have this happening? Why suddenly now? Not sure (but you can read on below).

Meanwhile, just in case, just today in fact, and as also mentioned in that same thread, I installed a 24VAC surge suppressor on the R and C lines between the PC board on the furnace and the tstat. I am waiting to see if this clips the theoretical surge and stops the tstat from changing modes to OFF. (Which is a real concern since that building has plumbing, it's below freezing here and we are leaving for Florida soon.) It has been a few hours and so far so good. But it's a random thing.

Now, having said all that! The other complicating/coincidental factor is that I also recently installed a third 2441TH in yet a third outbuilding about the time I noticed these mode changes happening in the other building. The new tstat is doing a weird thing where the screen goes blank and becomes unreachable. It will randomly do this and randomly come back on. But it does not cause the furnace to stop.  Not sure what to do so I installed the same surge protector on that furnace as well, cleaned all the contacts, replaced the ancient wiring, etc. It went blank again right after I did it then came back on. WTF?

I also installed several 1626-10 Plug-In Powerline Noise Filters, on the furnaces and other stuff like nearby refridgerators, etc. That seemed to do nothing.

Next I am going to reset both tstats to factory and re-add them. They are not in scenes and I have not yet upgraded to an ISY. Still using the Insteon hubs. Wish me luck. I am going to keep monitoring and will report back if things change. I now have a lot invested in all this Insteon stuff. ISY next!

I have 1 2441TH that was a refurbished item when purchased.  It would work fine for several days and then go blank and be unreachable.  It was one that use on a 24v wall wart and as a temp and humidity sensor in one of the bedrooms, so it was not hooked to HVAC system and was not critical.  I could unplug it let it sit for a day and it would start working again and then fail again after a few days.  I resoldered most joints on the PCB and it has been working for several months now without a hiccup.  If its new I would return and get repalcement, if it is older I would resolder PCB joints especially around pin connectors and (can't recall which they are), regualtors or FETs.
