mcisar Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 I *thought* I had things set up "properly" finally, and then I brought some new friends to the party... now not so much again I have a light which is connected to an Insteon SwitchLinc Dimmer ("LR W LT Dim"), I also have 2 keypadlincs on which I have buttons dedicated to controlling and providing status of this same light ("LR E BTN B" and "HW E BTN C"). I also have a scene ("LR LT Scn") to which all 3 of the above are added as both controllers and responders. So far it's all working splendiferously. Push the switch or either of the buttons, the light comes on, the buttons light up... things dim and brighten as expected, all is good. Recently I decided to bring a couple of new friends called Google Home and Alexa to the party... here's where things seem to be going awry though. If I add the scene ("LR LT Scn") to either Google or Alexa I can turn the light on and off just fine, but neither seems to recognize the scene as being dimmable so I can't dim the light. Conversely if instead I add the light device itself ("LR W LT Dim") I can successfully turn the light on and off as well as dim and brighten it, but the indicators on the two keypad buttons do not follow whether the light is on or off if it's been activated/deactivated by Google or Alexa. I feel that (again) I've missed something subtle in the configuration that's preventing this from all working in sync. Note that the next planned guest to the party will be a 2nd light fixture connected to another SwitchLinc Dimmer (to be named "LR N LT Dim") that will be included the same scene. I'm sure this complicates things even more because then controlling the light device directly with Google/Amazon won't be an option since we'll then be talking about two separate devices. Any thoughts?
oberkc Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 When you added the "LR LT Scn" to alexa, did you add it (alexa category) as a scene, or as a device/light? I have several ISY scenes added to alexa as a device/light that I can dim or brighten.
mcisar Posted October 9, 2020 Author Posted October 9, 2020 Hmm, I'll have to double check... I'm going to take a wild guess and say I probably added it as a scene
oberkc Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Yes. That whole integration between ISY and Alexa seems a little strained to me. Some of it may be terminology amongst the two camps. It took more than a little bit of experimentation on my part to even recognize that those differences existed. I have scenes set up as devices. I have switches set up as motion sensors. It is still unclear to me what the implications are as one chooses the Alexa categories. Hopefully, in your case, solving your problem is as simple as this.
