First off, apologies for the duplicate post on this topic. I did take the time to search other posts where people are having the same problems adding a new device with error message: "Cannot determine Insteon Engine".  I tried some suggestions, but didn't find anything that solved this for me.

I just bought three 2477D's from Orchestrated Home recently & I'm trying to get them added to my network as new devices (not replacing anything else). They all are on the same circuit breaker. In fact, two of them are in the same switch box in the wall.

I was able to successfully add 1 of the dimmers. The other two I have not been able to - all attempts end with 'Cannot determine Insteon Engine'.  I've tried both auto-discovery as well as selecting the exact device type from the list.

I have a 994i Pro.  Running 5.3.3 (confirmed both firmware & UI are the same version).

Attached is the log file from one of the dimmers that I have not been able to add. But, it's not giving me enough data to figure out what might be the problem.

Since these dimmers are in short supply, I worry that maybe I just got 2 bad dimmers & that I need to return them.

TIA

The error message means that your PLM is unable to communicate with the device(s). It's possible that you have noise on your powerline or that the Insteon mesh network is weak due to a lack of dual band devices and/or that the 2 legs of your powerline aren't coupled.

It's also possible you entered the incorrect ID for the device. What's the 6 digit address of one of your devices.

From your log post. It look like the module is not answering the message for identifying itself.

Double check the six digit Insteon ID number. I have also seen reports of some letters and numbers have been read incorrectly.

What method are you using to try and add them? Start Linking, Auto or drop down list?

Factory reset the dinners per manual. Choose start linking in the Isy and then press and hold set button on insteon devices until you hear a chirp

Thank you @lilyoyo1.  I have never used this method of linking.  And guess what?  Once it successfully linked, I realized that the  '0' (zero) in the address (which I looked at probably 10 different times), really is a 'D'.  And the other dimmer also had a '0' in the address which really is a 'D'.

Funny thing is that I had seen other posts suggesting that the addresses might be misread & in fact, for the one dimmer that I initially got working, I realized that the '8' really was a 'B'.  But, I never would have guessed that the '0' was really a 'D' & that was the case for the other 2 dimmers.

I spent hours trying to troubleshoot this myself before posting on here (most of the suggestions I had already tried) but linking the device in this fashion identified it's true address.

The printing on those devices is really lame!

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions.  This forum rocks!
