smarthome_newbie Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I have 3 zwave devices and an Insteaon siren installed. They all receive the "cannot communicate" message in admin console but the devices still work with my programs and I can control them from the admin console. This started when I unplugged the siren and plugged it back in. Any idea why Im getting this message?
MrBill Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 It's weird that the insteon device is effecting z-wave devices. If any have red X's in the admin console, right click the device and select query.
larryllix Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Insteon devices can have many links. One for commands and one for status back messages and more. When your ISY does a query and doesn't get a proper response it marks it as "can't communicate". When ISY issues commands, it assumes the device did what it wanted and you see that. If the devices reports a different status ISY will update and you will see that. A query usually gives the true picture. Try right clicking on the device and select "Restore" to write proper links back into the device. If that doesn't correct the problem then you likely have some interference in your Insteon comms. I would suspect the last item added...your Zwave device. Unplug it and see if things start to work after a restore.

Techman Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 @smarthome_newbie What are your ISY firmware and UI versions? What version of the Zwave dongle are you running, 300 or 500? Early versions of the siren had compatible issues with some versions of the ISY firmware

The Insteon siren no longer shows as "cannot communicate" but the three z wave devices still do. I tried the restore device, but got "Platform errors --7" and then "request failed." Do I think I have to remove them all and add them back?
Techman Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 Do you have the ISY994 or the Polisy? What version of the Zwave dongle do you have, 300, 500 or 700? What is the distance between the closest non-battery operated Z-wave device and your controller? Are you Z-wave devices plug-in or in the wall?

I have avoided it since the beginning of time, until about 1 year ago and my initial trials turned me off. For now they are all in a box, at least until I downsize my abode. I think @Techmanis your guide there. Edited May 4, 2022 by larryllix 1

ISY 994i doesn't have a dongle, right? Isn't it built in? Distance is around 80 feet. Never had an issue until now. Z wave devices are plug in to outlet. Thanks!
Techman Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 The ISY uses an internal Z-wave dongle. If when you bought the ISY it included Z-wave then you either have the 300 or 500 series dongle included.. The Polisy uses an external Z-wave dongle, currently the Zooz ZST10 700, which you could have ordered it with the Polisy or you can buy one from either UDI or Amazon. 80 feet is pushing the limits between your controller and your first Z-wave device. The 700 series devices have a much greater range than the 500 or 300 series. It also depends what the first Z-wave device closest to the controller is, 300, 500, or 700 series device.
