joeria Posted September 6, 2023 Share Posted September 6, 2023 Hi, Hope I'm asking this question in the correct group. I have an outdoor awning that is operated by a 110v motor. While the awning has been changed the motor and control pre-dates our ownership of the home in 2000. The control is a simple momentary rocker switch. Push it up and the awning opens for as long as you hold it, push it down nd it closes for as long as you hold it. The motor seems to have shutoff once the awning is either fully opened or closed. The rocker is in a typical single gang box. My question is if anyone has any thoughts on how I can control this with Insteon & Polisy. What device, if any might work? atmarosi Posted September 6, 2023 Share Posted September 6, 2023 Get a IO Linc - this will act as a controllable relay as an insteon node. You can then set it to be latching in the settings, connect the NO and COMM wires to the control behind the rocker switch on the awning and it should connect the two points activating the switch on your behalf. Techman Posted September 6, 2023 Share Posted September 6, 2023 It all depends on what the rocker switch is controlling., i.e. high voltage (110v), low voltage (12v), or a data signal. Is the rocker switch a SPDT or DPDT Does the awning motor have an auto shutoff limit switch (if the rocker switch is held down will the motor shut off when it reaches its limit) The IOLinc has limitations, so you'll need to read its specs. vbPhil Posted September 7, 2023 Share Posted September 7, 2023 My awning is a newer model Somfy motor that has an rf remote and 'Im using an ESP32 microcontroller with it that interfaces with Home Assistant. I know that's not your situation but. I do have an open/close sensor on the awning, so I know when it's open or closed. You could do that much with Insteon too. I use that in a script so when the wind exceeds 15mph and the awning is open it sends a close command. Comes in handy with all the winds here in New Mexico. Also, when you get the controller figured out, measure the time to open and close and you can use those values in a script as well to partially open and close the awning at different times of the day. Banichi Posted October 26, 2023 Share Posted October 26, 2023 I would say that the micro open/close module would be perfect for this. I've used that with motorized projector screens in the past and has worked great. This assumes that the motor is just a 110v motor which is sounds like it is. Seems like the switch is just DPDT momentary switch similar to how a winch on a car/ATV works. I think that the open/close modules aren't back in stock just yet but they are expected soon.
