Access Point Problems

Recommended Posts

I have been running Houselinc 2 since it came out. I have 3 panels with i hard wire coupler and 4 access points 3 in the house and 1 in detached garage. got my isy with dualband friday and played all weekend with it trying to get it to work with my system. I tried to ling the outside motion detector to the isy but would not reconize it, went into the house where the isy is and instantly it connected. but i am getting nothing outside so i moved 1 of the access points from in the house to the garage which is about 15ft from the motion and still could not connect. house linc 2 sees the comand every time i press the button on the motion but the isy does nothing. i have tried several access points but nothing. the only way to get the motion sensors to work is to do it by the isy. Am i missing something or do you have to linc the access points to the isy? i am at a loss where everything worked perfectly now with the isy only the motion in the house work.

Thanks

Jay

You do NOT define nor link Access Points to anything. They work without any configuration. The Set button procedure in the MS Quick Start guide ensures they are receiving power from opposite 120V legs but performs no actual configuration.

This is from the ISY User Guide regarding Motion Sensor linking ....

The Motion Sensor cannot be linked using Auto Discover. To link a Motion Sensor to the ISY, please choose the LINK MANAGEMENT pulldown, then NEW INSTEON DEVICE. Enter the device address manually (found inside the battery compartment), then select the “2420M INSTEON Motion Sensor†from the Device Type list.

Since the Motion Sensor is a battery-saving RF device, you must put the device into linking mode to add it to the ISY (and make any changes to the device, such as adding/removing from scenes). Please follow the on-screen instructions to put the Motion Sensor into linking mode when prompted (hold SET button for 5 seconds).

Once added to the ISY, the Motion Sensor will show up as 3 nodes. The primary node is the motion sensing portion of the device, which updates according to sensed motion (or lack of motion).

I did it per the isy manual but if i am not within range of the isy dual band it will not connect and load. if i am out of range of the isy and within range of the access points it will not load. but houselinc will register that it got the signal everytime. i even tried it without houselinc connected. i cannot link it with any of the 4 access points only the isy dual band. sorry to sound dumb but i don't understand how the 4 access points in my back garage will not let the motion detoctors connect. but if i take the motion detector in the house to the isy it will. the access points are good cause houselinc will see the commands in the garage.

Thanks

Sorry if i misunderstood the problem. You have successfully added the Motion Sensor to the ISY but you do not see any of the Group 1 On/Off commands from the Motion Sensor in the ISY Event Viewer using Change level 3 unless you move the MS close to the ISY PLM. Is that the situation. Since you indicate HouseLinc2 continues to see the MS commands what option of the three associated with deleting or maintaining existing links did you use when you added the MS to the ISY.

Assuming any of the Access Points receive the MS commands it is now a powerline question as the Access Points should put the MS commands on the powerline. The range of the MS to the ISY Dual Band PLM should not be a factor once any of the Access Points puts the MS message on the powerline. If HouseLinc2 sees the commands and the ISY PLM does not either the powerline communication to the ISY PLM is not reliable or the links that the ISY should have added to the MS so that the MS will send commands to the ISY PLM are in question. Thus the question about the existing links option chosen during the MS device add.

I used the remove links option when added. the garage is about 40ft behind the house, that's were i have houselinc installed on my computer and have been using it this way for several yrs but wanted the isy to be able to shut the computer off. i installed the isy in the center of the house cause that's were i have the network. I did all the programming for all the switches from the garage ( which has 7 switches in it) and no problems adding them in the house or garage and can control everything i only had 1 ap in the garage for the md mounted on the garage the other 3 were in the house coupling lines. i have since moved them to the garage trying to link the md but no luck. now that i have the md's added to the isy i will check the logs to see if it sees it. i know last night the md would not trigger my outside lights but if i hooked houselinc back up it would.

Thanks

If you are still seeing MS commands at HouseLinc2 then the MS still has links to the HouseLinc2 PLM (unless you did not remove the MS from HL2 before asking the ISY to delete the links in the MS). That could mean that the existing links in the MS pointing to the HL2 PLM were not deleted and the ISY links not added.

If the Event Viewer level 3 does not show MS traffic with the MS at the Dual Band PLM location then the links in the MS to the Dual Band PLM are in question. If you see MS traffic when it is close but not when it is outside then powerline communication is in question between the Access Point receiving the MS RF traffic and the Dual Band PLM location.

Post back after getting the results of the Event Viewer exercise.
