matapan Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I still get sporadic and random "Can't Communicate with " errors in the Admin Console from time to time. I also don't always get all the responders in a scene to respond to a scene command reliably. In researching the issue on the forum, it sounds like v35 Switchlincs are the culprit. Has this been proven definitively? If so, several questions: - Does this affect the dimmer and relay switches? - Is this being treated as a known issue by Smarthome? In other words, are they accommodating people by replacing these switches with equivalents that don't have the firmware issue, even if they're out of the warranty period? - Are there users on this forum who have seen their communication issues resolved, as described above by the replacement of all the v35 switches on their network? I have 12 of these v35 Switchlincs on my Insteon network. After trying various approaches to fix the problem, I'm wondering if replacement will take care of my issues once and for all. It would truly be nice to have a reliable system going.
oberkc Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 My knowledge of this is based only upon what I have read at this forum. Has this been proven definitively? Beyond a reasonable doubt. Is this being treated as a known issue by Smarthome? Yes. Are there users on this forum who have seen their communication issues resolved, as described above by the replacement of all the v35 switches on their network? Some have reported such experience.
apostolakisl Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 My experience is that no, they are not treating it as a valid problem with their devices. I tried to exchange 10 switches I had that were about 3 months past the two year warranty, they said no, as did the "manager". They literally told me to sell them on ebay (which I did, but I did clearly label them as v35's).
simonw Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Getting rid of SWL v35 did help my system. In the summer of 2010 I changed out 5 or 6 v35 SwitchLincs that were maybe 6 months old at that point, clearly still under warranty - they did check the purchase dates, which was easy since I had purchased directly from SH. I just asked to exchange them "because they were V35" and I was using them with an ISY-99i. Nobody challenged this or suggested I try a bunch of factory resets or whatever, they were very good and just cross-shipped newer units. My comm problems basically disappeared. SH seemed very reasonable to me, much as I wish they were more pro-active about notifications (some people apparently had Venstar V2 thermostat problem notifications; not me, but mine's in the junk pile now and I'm not going back ) Simon
LeeG Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 matapan Not everyone who has v35 SwitchLincs have a problem. If the comm problems are caused by the v35 firmware new switches will resolve the problem. Of course, since many other things can also cause comm problems you won't know until they are replaced. I think it is worth the effort to replace them. Lee
matapan Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 LeeG, Thanks for your reply. It was worth the effort to replace them. I ran scene tests before and after the v35 Switchlinc replacements. I had a total of 10 of these devices. I would inevitably get some kind of failure running a scene test before. No failures whatsoever after replacement. I wish I knew earlier that these Switchlincs were directly causing the comm errors I was seeing up until now. Maybe the absence of these errors means that my scene commands will work more reliably now.
