Garage program and KPL LED status

I'm sure there is a very simple explanation for this but the LED for the 8 button kp is not reflecting the actual status as to the garage door when I toggle the garage door to close/open via the kp. The light goes out as soon as I press the button to close and comes on as soon as I press the button to open. I think it should wait until the sensor has been satisfied in either condition. But, if I open and close the door manually the LED on the kp changes accordingly. I used the wiki instructions to set this up but maybe I missed something. Please assist, Thank you

Did you put your kpl in non-toggle mode?

 

There is so much interrelationship between the setup, including location of sensor and which sensor mode (N.O. N.C.) one uses that it may be useful to summarize the approach you took if the non-toggle concern does not solve your problem.

Yes it is in toggle mode and I used the RED and BLACK wires off of the sensor (Can't remember if that compliment was NO or NC). The weird thing is that if i raise and lower the door manually the LED on the KPL turns on when open and goes out when closed as it should.

So if it's in non-toggle mode does that mean I have to have on button dedicated to OPEN and one button dedicated to CLOSE?

 

No. This is part of that "interrelationship" thing I was talking about. To answer your specific question, to avoid having to create a separate "open" and "close" button, one must also configure your relay properly. This means you set your relay to respond only to either "on" or "off", depending on which mode you set your keypad. This can be done through the ISY-99. There are three momentary modes, and one latching mode. A description is here:

The mode you choose for your switch is, in my estimation, based on several things. First is the location of your sensor (is the sensor located low on the door, where it is in "contact" when the door is fully closed, or up high, where it is in contact when fully opened?). Second is your sensor type and hookup (does your LED indication come on when the door is open or closed?). Third, your primary interest in door status is a factor. Do you prefer a higher confidence level in knowing that your door is fully opened, or fully closed. Finally, how do you want to define the meaning of the KPL button (do you want an illuminated KPL to indicate "open" or "closed"?).

I mounted the sensor high so it will be out of the way of things to prevent it from getting knocked around and tearing wires or bumped out of alignment, but it's still in contact with magnet when fully closed . Not sure of the exact type of sensor (Threw paperwork away), buts it's what the guys at Smarthome sent with the kit (Pretty rugged, metal construction). I have it set-up so the the LED on the keypad is illuminated (on) when the door is open and that's what I want it to display. I guess if I have to choose which condition I want a higher level of confidence as to whether the door is open or closed that would be CLOSED.

As described, once you put the keypad button into non-toggle On mode, you should see the button light remain ON until the door closes.

Yes sir.... Everything seems to work but the concern is (with the door fully opened) and I press the button on the keypad the LED on the kp goes out as immediately, I would think it should wait until the door is fully closed as reported from the sensor. It seems like it's acting on the condition of the kp button and not the sensor on the door. Again the weird thing is if I go to the door and manually raise and lower the door the LED on the kp goes on when the door is opened and out when closed... As it should. Can you send either the wiki link or some other step by step process for setting this up (can't find it) and i will reconfirm if I did it correctly.

The KeypadLinc button is acting like a KeypadLinc button. Press it and the LED toggles On or Off immediately. That is what a KeypadLinc button does. It has no logic to say since an I/O Linc Sensor is linked to the button and the I/O Linc is connected to a garage door it should do something different. That would be attributing a level of intelligence to the KeypadLinc it does not have.

 

The KeypadLinc button is being used for two purposes. Move the door and reflect door status. It cannot do both the way you want. Putting the KeypadLinc button in non-toggle On mode the button will blink twice and remain On. The I/O Linc Sensor will turn it Off when the door closes. It will still not reflect the fact that the door moved when asked to open as the button will be On from either a toggle On or a non-toggle On. If you want absolute accuracy use two buttons, one to drive door movement and one to reflect door open/close status.

 

As an alternative a few ISY Programs could be written to sense when the KeypadLinc button is pressed On and check the I/O Linc Sensor Status a few seconds later to confirm the door actually moved . It the I/O Linc Sensor did not turn On the Program would turn the KeypadLinc button Off which would indicate the door did not open. Same thing with the KeypadLinc Off press. Check the I/O Linc Sensor 10 seconds later to make sure the Sensor turned Off. If not turn the KeypadLinc button On to indicate the door did not close.
