garage door iolinc settings

Unforturnately there are no "right" settings. Depends on which magnetic switch is used (NO or NC). Is the Sensor preferred On or Off when the door is closed? How is the I/O Linc Relay being controlled, Scene versus Direct command from Program. Each of these affects what I/O Linc options are appropriate.

 

It sounds like the wrong Momentary mode is being used as each Momentary mode responds differently to Scene On and Off commands but that is only a guess without knowing the variables above. The I/O Linc User Guide covers how Scene commands work with the three Momentary modes.

 

Descrbe how the I/O Linc is connected, using NO or NC, is Green LED On or Off when door is closed? How should the door state be presented in the house if at all. How should the door movement be controlled; one KPL button that both opens and closes the door. Separate KPL buttons for Open/Close.

I went through the Quick Start Guide and The Manual for I/OLINC Garage Door. Did so many things and nothing seem to work. By the way, I have an ISY994i, KeypadLinc, I/OLinc Garage Door and MobiLinc Pro.

It seem like I can't get them all to work. Base on the Manual, I need to be in Momentary C. I did that and when I tried to turn Garage Door-Relay "ON" it will open the garage door. Which is great. But when press to turn "OFF". It did nothing. Then pressed it one more time to turn it "ON" then it close the garage door. The OFF button doesn't seem to work. I want to program the Sensor to be ON when Garage Closed, OFF when Garage Open. And the opposite for the Relay. Turn ON to Open Garage and Press Off to Close Garage Door. Can some expert see where I did wrong? And what should I try next?

Do not use Insteon Direct On/Off commands to start with. A Direct On ALWAYs turns the Relay On. In any of the Momentary modes the I/O Linc automatically turns the Relay Off so the Direct Off command has no function. The I/O Linc User Guide, when it is discussing different Momentary modes and the relationship with On and Off commands, it is exclusively discussing Scene On and Scene Off commands. A device (other than the PLM) is not capable of issuing Direct device control commands so the User Guide is in the context of using Scenes.

 

I will not be on the forum much for the next few days. Hopefully someone else can jump in.

Base on the Manual, I need to be in Momentary C.

I believe you do not want this setting, my IOLinc is set to Momentary A.

 

The Sensor input of the IOLinc is used as a Controller in a Scene to turn a KeypadLinc Button On, or whatever is in the Scene.

 

The Relay output of the IOLinc is used as a Responder in a Scene to control your Garage Door.

 

So you need two separate Scenes to make everything work.

 

Garage_Door_Relay_Scene

<-Garage Door-Relay

KeypadLinc_Button_A

 

Garage_Door_Sensor_Scene

->Garage_Door-Sensor

KeypadLinc_Button_A

 

The KeypadLinc Button you use should be set to Non-Toggle mode. Non-Toggle [On] should work for you just fine.

Regarding all insteon device quick start guides and user manuals...these instructions assume NO ISY PRESENT. Once you introduce the ISY device into your insteon system, you should base your programming steps from the ISY user manual and universal devices wiki. The manuals are useful to help undertand how to put individual devices into linking modes, how to factory reset them, etc. However, all scenes should be created via the ISY. By the way, I found the manual for the IOLinc Garage Kit to be confusing and, possibly, incorrect.

 

Regarding the wiki, there is a very nice explanation on how to setup a garage door IOLinc with a keypad button. Go to the wiki, search for garage, and it shows up in the search results.

 

I also suggest searching the forum. The garage door scenerio is oft-discussed. Answers to most of your questions are addressed in some very recent threads.

 

When LeeG speaks of "direct" commands, I believe he is talking about commands from the ISY admin panel, where one can choose the device (relay, in this case) and turn it on or off. Scene commands would be where another insteon device or ISY scene is used to control the relay.

 

Like LeeG states, there is no single correct answer. The mode you want to use depends on the device you intend for control of your door (do you want to use a switch with ON for open and OFF for closed? Single keypad button? Separate keyad buttons for open/close). The correct mode can depend on whether you want to monitor status via the keypad button. The correct mode can depend on where you have your sensor mounted (is the sensor closed when the door is open or vice versa) as well as whether you are using a NO or NC sensor.

 

I like using a single keypad button to actuate the door, either to open or close it. I like to use the same KPL to indicate status. I also place higher importance on knowing the door is FULLY closed, rather than knowing the door is open. I like CLOSED to be indicated by the keypad button being OFF with ON for open. For these reasons, I have chosen:

 

a) mount the sensor such that it is engaged only when the door is fully closed.

B) use the correct sensor wires (I believe this is the normally closed wire) such that when the door is fully closed, the IOLinc sensor is OFF (I like OFF to indicate closed).

c) configure the keypad button so that it is in "non-toggle on" mode

d) configure the IOLinc relay to be in momentary mode, responding to ON commands (can also respond to both ON/OFF, but not to OFF only).

e) create an ISY scene with the keypad as controller and relay as responder

f) create an ISY scene with the sensor as controller and keypad button as responder

 

If you have already created links with the device outside the ISY, I suggest starting fresh with a factory reset of the IOLinc. Create all the scenes via the ISY. Configure the keypad and IOLinc via the ISY.

 

This is NOT a trivial excercise. I believe that it is important to understand the concepts behind how and why these things work. Once you understand the concepts, you can mix and match devices to suit your needs and interests.

I followed the above instruction and got my iolinc, keypadlinc, isy and mobilinc to work. The i/olinc and keypadlinc button work great. When I press the button on the keypadlinc, the led will lid up and the garage open. When I press the same button again. The led turn off and garage close. Which is great. However, when i check my isy and mobilinc. It is all mess up. The Relay and Sensor in the Device/Scene Tab didn't show the same result as the KeypadLinc button. I picked Momentary A which I believe (both ON/OFF) but the Relay only work when I press on. This on button does both Open and Close of the garage door. I have to press off (which doesn't do anything) before pressing on to open or close of the garage door.

When you said don't use Direct Command, do you mean don't use the Relay On/Off in the Device and/or Scene Tab?

This is not easy for sure. There are so many options to turn On/Off (Keypadlinc button, Mobilinc Device Tab, Mobilinc Scene Tab and also the Current Garage Door Opener) and that may cause the all the Statues to not showing up correctly.

I picked Momentary A which I believe (both ON/OFF) but the Relay only work when I press on.

 

I find this one a bit confusing, as well. Momentary A is "Either on or off". Compare this to momentary B, which is "both on and off". Momentary A can be set to respond either to "ON" or to "OFF", depending the state during which it was linked. Once set, however, it will not respond to both, but only the command set. If you want it to respond to both, use momentary B.

 

The Relay and Sensor in the Device/Scene Tab didn't show the same result as the KeypadLinc button.

 

A little-discussed detail about the relay is that it does NOT broadcast it's status. (That is why it cannot be a controller in a scene.) This means that the ISY will believe it is in the state last commanded by the ISY or by an included scene. If you commanded it to be "ON", then the ISY status will believe it to be on, even though it is in latching mode. My recommendation, do not worry about relay status. It has no meaning.

 

I have to press off (which doesn't do anything) before pressing on to open or close of the garage door.

 

This makes me think you skipped my step C. Put the keypad into "non-toggle on" mode.

If you were to do this, the latching mode apparently would not work and you run the risk of damage to your garage door opener. Instead, choose the scene in which the keypad button is controller and relay is responder. Send on/off commands via that scene. From mobilinc, use the scene, not the relay device, itelf, to which to issue commands.

 

By the way, if you want to know the status of your door, observe the status of the SENSOR. The relay has no relationship to the door being open or closed.

You are correct. The garage door is a good example of how scenes and controllers and responders work. One cannot skip one step, because they are all interrelated. However, once you begin to understand HOW and WHY things work, it gets to be much easier.

About the Sensor, I think the Sensor is weird too. Right now, the Garage Door is closed. The KeypadLinc button is OFF. The Green Sensor LED on the IOLINC is lit. So is the Sensor supposed to show ON in MobiLinc?

When the Green LED in the I/O Linc is On it means the I/O Linc Sensor is On. The command the I/O Linc sends when the Sensor is On depends on the Trigger Reverse option. If the Trigger Reverse option is set the commands are reversed. The I/O Linc sends a Sensor Off message when the Sensor is physically On (Green LED On) and sends a Sensor On message when the Sensor is physically Off (Green LED Off). That is why the option is called Trigger Reverse. It reverses the command sent versus the actual status of the Sensor in the I/O Linc

 

What the ISY and MobiLinc show for the Sensor state depends on whether Trigger Reverse is used.

Does the LED light consistently come on when closed and off when open? If everything else is working as you wish, then I would simply not worry about it and remember that LED on means closed and LED off means open. IN the end, does it really matter whether the LED is on or off?

The KeypadLinc button lit when the garage door is opened and dark, unlit when closed. Which is great, exactly how I want it to display. I can see these lit/unlit button when I am home. When I am away from home, I am kinda worry if the Garage is closed or still open.

Ok, I just double check my current setting. It is Momentary A: Triggered by either On or Off, Momentary hold time (seconds) 2.0, Program Lock (uncheck), Key Beep (uncheck), LED on TX(check), Relay Follows Input(uncheck), Send X10 Send On or Off(uncheck), Trigger Reverse(check).

Right now, the current status of my Garage Door is CLOSED, Garage Relay on ISY/Mobilinc is OFF, Garage Sensor on ISY/Mobilinc is ON, KeypadLinc Button is OFF/unlit. This status is all correct. Espcially the Garage Sensor, I want it to be On when the Garage Door is closed.

I will update the status everytime I open and close the Garage so you guy can help me understand with I need to do to make this working the way it supposed to. Most importantly the Sensor, since I want to make sure the Garage Door is closed when I am away from home.

OK. Do you percieve a problem with any of this? Is the door opening and closing properly from the keypad button (it sounds as if it is)? Is the keypad button displaying proper status (it appears that it is)?

 

The only thing that looks a little suspicous to me is sensor status. Given your apparent setup is slightly different than my suggestions, sensor status is as I would expect until the morning, where I expected sensor to be "ON", yet it was "OFF". I would recheck these readings.

 

What else troubles you, if anything?

OK. Do you percieve a problem with any of this? Is the door opening and closing properly from the keypad button (it sounds as if it is)? Is the keypad button displaying proper status (it appears that it is)?

 

The only thing that looks a little suspicous to me is sensor status. Given your apparent setup is slightly different than my suggestions, sensor status is as I would expect until the morning, where I expected sensor to be "ON", yet it was "OFF". I would recheck these readings.

 

What else troubles you, if anything?
