seallred
I had been using Girder by Promixis to manage my Insteon environment. I had read a lot of good things about ISY 994i/IR PRO so decided to make the switch. I hooked up the ISY 994i to my PLM (2412S ) and my router. - setup ISY as a fixed IP - logged into the admin console - see that it is recognizing my PLM - I did a factory reset of my PLM so that I could get a clean start - Started the linking process - Tried a couple of my 2476D switches - but no luck, nothing happened - Tried to add Insteon device but I get an error - 0D.02.CD "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" The Girder software had been working just fine so figured I would just be able to unplug the PLM from my home automation computer and into the ISY 994i and go. Unfortunately no luck with that so far. Hoping I am just doing something stupid, otherwise I will have to start the long trouble shooting process of unplugging everything in my house and see if I have any luck. Here are some details on my setup (started about 6 years ago): - PLM (2412S) - 2 2443 Access Point - 16 2476D switches - 3 2476DH switches - 2 2477D switches (just replaced a couple of old ICON switches with these last week) - 3 2876DB switches - 2 2876SB switches - 1 2466SW togglelinc switch - 2 2486D keypad switch - 2 2476D3 lamplinc - 3 2856D2B ICON Lamp Module - 1 1626-10 FilterLinc (PLM is plugged into this) Any help would be much appreciated. LeeG
Is the ISY PLM plugged into the same outlet that was used by the other application? Are other electronic devices on the circuit isolated with a FilterLinc? The ISY uses the latest Insteon commands for support of the I2CS protocol. That may not be the case with the other application. Run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer with LEVEL 3. Use New INSTEON Device, entering the Insteon Address, Name of choice and Device Type at default Auto Discover. Post the event trace. That will show the commands issued and how the device did or did not respond.
dbong
Just wondering, is the 2412s a dual-band? The PLM is plugged into the filterlinc. Wouldn't this block the 2412s if it is not dual-band?

LeeG
Great pickup. The PLM cannot be plugged into the Filtered outlet of a Filterlinc. The passthru outlet is okay. A 2412S is not Dual Band.
LeeG
Thanks for the event trace. It indicates the device is not responding to any of the three attempts to communicate with 0D 02 CD. What type of device is this? Might try another factory reset of the PLM. Also if there is a pluggable device that can be moved to the PLM plug point. This will show if there is a PLM issue after the factory reset or a more general comm. problem.

LeeG
Thanks for the clarifications. The event trace does show some volatility in the communication with 0D 48 33. The Hops Left count is changing and the first Off command did not get any device response. Looks like a comm problem but with a limited example of devices this could be an issue with the type of load 0D 48 33 is controlling. Not being able to turn a device Off can be the result of a noisy load such that it interferes with receiving the Off command once the load is powered. seallred
I can reset it and try again. This is a LampLinc that I hadn't been using. While I do that here is another example. I plugged another LampLinc (2456D3) directly into the PLM and used the Add New Insteon Device and it worked but it seemed to have some problems and at the very end I got a communication error in the event logs. This LampLinc is used to operate a lamp in the family room and has been working great. The ISY should not need to retry the commands. Since you have "many" noisemakers plugged into the filterlinc, try moving the PLM to another outlet. Line separation from noise devices is a good thing that adds to the filtering effect through line inductance. Filters are good, but some noise will make it through. seallred
If you can afford to loose the links that you had in your old system, delete the device from the ISY, factory reset, then re-link using the "remove existing links" option. I did all of the above and re-added the device output of event log below. Seemed to be successful but I am still getting communication errors from time to time and it's plugged directly into my PLM. I am beginning to wonder if my PLM is defective. Thoughts? I may order a new one, guess that would have to be the 2413s. LeeG
There is an issue with comm for sure. For a device plugged into the same outlet as the PLM the Hops Left count should be consistent. Instead the Hops Left count is jumping around from 2 which is the best, to 1, to 0 which is the worst, to no device response at all. Try pulling the plug from the filtered outlet to completely remove that equipment and power strip. Then Delete and readd one of the LampLincs and post the event trace. Trying to determine if there is a PLM issue or substantial interference even with the FilterLinc. There should be status LED when LampLinc is powered. A new PLM would be a 2413S. The 2413 does not provide power for the ISY as the 2412 does so a small external power supply for the ISY is required in addition to the 2413. Smarthome carries them. . Try pulling the plug from the filtered outlet to completely remove that equipment and power strip. Then Delete and readd one of the LampLincs and post the event trace. Trying to determine if there is a PLM issue or substantial interference even with the FilterLinc. That did it. I have now linked to most all my Insteon devices and started creating my scenes. Thanks for all the trouble shooting help, really appreciate it. There should be status LED when LampLinc is powered. Looks like I have one that needs to be filed. The LED never comes on. A new PLM would be a 2413S. The 2413 does not provide power for the ISY as the 2412 does so a small external power supply for the ISY is required in addition to the 2413. Smarthome carries them.. My ISY came with a power supply so no problem there. I ordered a 2413S today when I was thinking my PLM might be the problem. Before I cancel the order (or return it) is there any advantage to having a 2413S over the 2412S. Now that I have the 2412S working seems like I should just go with it. I am just wondering if one is more reliable than the other or has any other advantages that I should consider. Once again, thanks for all the help. LeeG
The 2413 is Dual Band so there could be some advantage there. It has a faster processor which some folks have indicated can be detected in speed of command execution. Can't say I have seen this as things are controlled by slots of time on the AC sine wave. The 2413 supports about half the number of links (approx 1000 compared to 2000 for 2412) however there are indications the 2412 has issues using more than 800 links (which generated speculation that is why the 2413 was produced with a faster CPU). If the 2412 is working for you why not continue to use it. Some folks like to keep a backup PLM on hand. The downside of that approach is the backup PLM firmware cannot advance. I see it as more personal choice and how much day to day is your Insteon setup dependent on having a functional PLM. A PLM can generally be obtained in a day or two with air ship so again, your choice. I have several PLMs available for test purposes but would not likely keep a spare otherwise because it locks in the firmware to what is available now rather than getting the latest firmware when a new PLM is really needed. oberkc
One other advantage to the spare PLM is the ability to run houselinc (now free, I understand). It appears to have a few tools that could be useful for diagnostic purposes.
arw01
Also, I have read elsewhere on the forum, that the 2412 may play a little nicer with the oldest insteon switches and kpl's. I have some OLD ones that need my 2413S plugged right into the outlet below them to program them. After that they never give me any trouble in use, but I occassionally get a cannot communicate error. This did not go away even with a access point in the same outlet as I bring the PLM sometimes with an extension cord.
