will do. (not sure when) Note that I don't have any firewall s/w running right now on my Vista machine but I do have Windows Firewall running on my W7 laptop (I uninstalled TrendMicro soon after your post and after TM support said I had to buy an upgrade to be able to add exclusions, etc.)

just to post an update static IP does not fix the problem (went back to DHCP). still happens regularly. often okay for a couple of logins on the same day but rarely do I *not* have to login twice when I've been "off" for a day or more. Have been upgrading as they've been coming out and have been at 2.8.10 for a couple of days now. Have been running Java 6 update 22 for quite a while on both my W7 64-bit and Vista 32-bit machines (same thing happening on both). Just noticed there's an update 23 so will try that and post back if it somehow fixes the problem.

Just to post an update. I got a new ISY a month ago or so, and a new router a couple of weeks ago and I've been upgrading along the way as they came up to 2.8.10 a couple of days ago but I'm still having "New Programs" end up in the root folder many, if not most, times (but not always). It doesn't happen if it's one of the first things I do after a login but once I've done a few things I can't get a new program to create in the folder I'm working in (or even show up at all - I have to "save and undo" to see it.) This happens on both my W7 64-bit and Vista 32-bit machines. I've had Java 6 update 22 installed for some time now. I just noticed there's an update 23 and will update to that for what it's worth and post back if that fixes things (no news means bad news...)

spoke too soon. static IP address did not fix the problem. I upgraded to 2.8.5, which I understand adds network error info but so far the problem, which is intermittent or at least was in 2.8.4, has not re-occured (but it hasn't been tested much yet.) - Note: I went back to DHCP too.

spoke too soon. static IP address did not fix the problem. have upgraded to 2.8.5, which did not fix the problem either but from what I understand if it's a network related issue, there may be some useful info in the error logs at some point. Although none came up tonight after the problem happened again, I'll check periodically in case something shows up. I tried exporting the "New Program" and re-importing it and it created a duplicate (empty) New Program in the root folder. Also exported another program and imported it into the root folder. Just made a duplicate of the same program in the root folder. Tried creating another New Program after this and it still did not come up until I did save-undo and then it comes up in the root folder (i.e. same problem). I don't know if this provides any more clues as to what's happening.

Update: Problem had been happening regularly until a couple of days ago when I changed from DHCP to a static IP address, which appears to have solved the problem. I'll probably install 2.8.5, which I understand has extra network debugging info and go back to DHCP to get you more info. Or if the problem returns while I'm using a static IP address, I may try exporting and re-importing a program as suggested to see what that gives me.
-
changing to a static IP address instead of using DHCP appears to have solved the problem for now.
-
I changed to a static IP address from DHCP and this problem and the others appear to have gone away. When I have a bit more time I'll install 2.8.5 and go back to DHCP (which I'd rather use) and report back on the error msgs I get.

Have noticed the ISY console has not been getting updated on my Win 7 machine after a program runs. A simple program that runs when I double click (i.e. fast on) one light to turn on another did not appear to have run after running when I re-sorted by Last Run Time. I did the double click a couple of times and the program ran - the second light came on - but the console did not show the relevant program as having run both times until I restarted the console. This is not consistent (it does seem to update most times) and it didn't happen when I switched to my Vista machine, tonight anyway. (I don't use my Vista machine as often for ISY stuff and don't know if I've been missing stuff on this front.) This is not the only GUI problem I've been encountering. The others, which still happen regularly (on both my W7 and Vista machines) and I'm just living with, are in the following threads: http://forum.universal-devices.com/viewtopic.php?t=5245 http://forum.universal-devices.com/viewtopic.php?t=5054 Am running ISY v 2.8.4, Java 1.6.0_22-b04 (32 bit), firefox 3.5.15 to start Java on both by Windows 7 64-bit and Vista 32-bit machines.

Is there a way to stop the ISY console and console messages when they are in the background from interrupting my foreground window? I will often open another program, e.g. web browser, and do something else while ISY console is left in the background, sometimes doing nothing in particular, sometimes getting some work done like writing many links for a new scene I just created. While I'm using the other program sometimes ISY messages come to the forefront and sometimes the whole console comes to the forefront and interrupts my other active window to become the active window. It seems to happen equally whethere I'm running in applet mode or application mode.

yes, happens on desktop too. in fact it sometimes looks to me like it happens each time I change to using my desktop after having used my laptop a few times - but that might just be perception. (I'll have to pay closer attention.) If it's Trend Micro FW blocking ISY event it's only doing it intermittently. I will try adding ISY to its exclusion list nonetheless to be sure. I'll try turning off my software firewalls on both (adding the exclusiong beforehand to Trend Micro's) and count on my router for firewall protection.
-
cache was re-enabled right after your Oct 25th about it. on the main machine I use I have the Trend Micro firewall that came with my 2-month old Dell Vostro laptop, v16.0.3200 on the desktop I use less frequently I have the built-in Windows Vista firewall enabled.
-
just the console, I think, or at least mostly. there were times when I decided to restart ISY but I don't know for sure that I needed to. I may call at some point if/when time permits.

Just a quick update to mention that the problem stopped happening for between 5-10 logins after my last post then started happening again for about 3-4 of the next 5-6 logins then stopped happening again for another 5-10 logins, then happened twice today (out of maybe 6-8 logins.) Note that I'm having other GUI problems too, like the right click menu not coming up on the main (devices) tab, and general freezing. Restarts have been fixing those so that's what I've been doing. I may check if there are any posts on those issues or open another thread but time is scarce and all this troubleshooting and trying to report intelligently on what's happening is taking away from getting stuff done so I may just live with having to do restarts every now and again - 'specially if I'm the only one having these problems.

yes, there's a green arrow so it was saved but it appears some sort of other change occurred on reload. I upgraded earlier today to Java update 22 and the problem hasn't re-occurred since but it hasn't been heavily tested yet either. Will try what you suggested and let you know the outcome if it happens again. Note on the Java front, FWIW, my Win 7 machine had 64-bit Java installed, which comes with a few quirks I found out. First it didn't have an update option in the control panel. I had to go to the web site and download update 22 myself, which then installed as a 32 bit version but my Java control panel didn't recognize it (still said update 20, not 22 although the Java web site version checker said I had 22 installed). I went into Programs & Features control panel and unistalled the update 20 reference, which fixed things, including restoring the update functionality that is part of 32-bit version but not 64-bit. Another quirk is that on the Java web site I didn't find a reference to Firefox - which is what I use - with respect to 64-bit Java. If I follow what I did find about 64-bit Java I'm suppose to use 64-bit IE in order to use it... I don't know if the above adds anything of value because I also have a 32-bit vista machine I use and think I had the problem with it too. That said I'm not 100% sure so maybe it is (was?) unique to my Win 7 / 64-bit Java setup.

Done, however note that I did a "New Program" as soon as I opened the Program Details this time, i.e. in the parent folder, and it didn't appear so it's happening outside my sub folders too. Note too that I renamed the parent folder to "ISY Programs" hoping this would help me organizing things better in HomeSeer by using the HS ISY Plug-in folder naming feature to give ISY devices their own location. (It didn't work the way I had hoped but I didn't bother changing it back). Maybe something bad happens if one messes with the parent folder name?

In Program Summary, all columns (path, etc.) are blank except name: "New Program" and activity: "-Not Saved-" when i click "edit" from Program Summary it brings me to Program Details tab. I am able to edit the new program (that I can't see in the left pane), it saves when I hit "save changes", and - after a restart - it shows up in the parent folder. I can upload a screenshot if it would help and if someone tells me how ("img" button didn't work) Clicking "undo" certainly clears everything up (New Program is gone) but it does not solve the problem next time I click New Program. Now clicking "save" first then "undo" does now show me the "New Program" (again in the parent folder, not where I was when I clicked New Program button) but it shows up as modified/"not saved" (like some kind of change occured between the save and the reloading that occurs when I clicked undo.) The save-undo combination is a step toward making this easier to work with but it's a bit of a kludge. It's very frequent for me, although remains inconsistent. Am I the only one who's having (or has ever had) this problem?

I will confirm that it downloads the files every time. The problem is that I'm having another issue, as you would know, with "New Programs" not appearing in Program Details page (http://forum.universal-devices.com/viewtopic.php?t=5054) and it was suggested the cache might be the problem in that case. I don't want to be clearing the cache everytime before I start the app so I turned it off (waiting for download is less painful than the 4-5 or whatever clicks to go clear the cache every time before I use the app) That other problem is still under investigation and even though turning off the cache didn't fix it, I'm assuming I better keep it out of the troubleshooting loop for now. (By the way, if I can re-enable the cache at this stage of troubleshoot the other problem, please let me know. I'm still going on the "GUI problems are usually a cache issue" advice I was given) I guess I'll wait until I can re-enable the cache before I report back (if this issue persists) By the way, a technicality but since you mentioned .jnpl specifically, is the situation different if I use the applet way to start the concole (no .jnpl)?

Yes, I was using the icon occasionally on my vista machine (I had no icon on my Win 7 machine for some reason; it disappeared one day some time ago when I cleared the cache and didn't come back) and I was getting double login. After I permanently turned off Java cache a few days ago (both machines) the icon disappeared on my vista machine so I've been using a toolbar bookmark in firefox exclusively on both machines. I was using 2.8.1 until a few days but have been on 2.8.4 for 3 or 4 days now. It certainly happened yesterday but it isn't happening today. That said it is an intermittent thing so it may yet happen again (will keep you posted)

Am (and have been) using variation #4, specifically http://192.168.0.250/admin.jpnl, with 192.168.0.250 being the IP address I configured my DHCP server to give ISY (based on its MAC address) For fun I will try some of the other variations over the next few days. Would it matter that I'm using Firefox (v3.5.14)? Maybe I'll try IE if the above variations don't fix the problem using Firefox. I'll let you know what happens.

i've been mindful of not having 2 consoles running on 2 machines but it has happened and i did chalk up some missing New Programs to that possibility. That said, the occurence this morning and many others previously would not be because of 2 consoles running (I looked for that specifically). Also, please note that I'm not losing any new programs, they just are not appearing on the program details page. I can edit and save them no problem (using the right-click edit on the program summary page) and on restart they are there in the parent folder.
-
by the way, is it accurate to say I'm dependent on my internet connection and the other end being up in order for the universal-devices/99i way of starting the console to work? (I wasn't using it because of that presumption)
-
thanks for replying. sorry, but i'm not quite following. what does xxx.xx.xx.xxx represent if not the IP address? do you mean i have use the universal-devices.com/99i to start the console to avoid this? are you also pointing out that I should avoid using the outside-the-browser java web start way (.jnpl)?

"14.83.D8 v92 / Connected"... I also validated that ISY and PLM are talking by turning a few lights on/off around me using the console. It's a bit strange because as soon as I logged in this morning I did a "New Program" just to test and it worked, then undid changes, did a bit of browsing around (didn't create or add anything, didn't shutdown console), came to forum to post a question about having to login twice then went back to test New Program again and the second time around it again didn't show up in detail tab. FWIW, I mostly use a Windows 7 64-bit machine though it also happens when I use my 32 bit Vista machine. I have v2.8.4, Java build 1.6.0_20-b02, and use admin.jnpl to start console

I often, but not always, need to login twice. The first time it appears to be coming from Java before the ISY console shows up on the screen, the second is clearly from ISY. I can click a "save password in list" option in the first instance, which I do, and it seems to stick for a few starts but then clears and asks me again. Is there a way to avoid one of the 2 logins? And while I'm at it, is there a way to bypass login in or auto-login all the time? I don't allow connections from the internet and am not worried about someone inside the house doing nefarious things (other than me, that is )
