How many watts does an insteon switch need to have on it to work properly?
hyounker replied to ingeborgdot's topic in Insteon
Of course, everyone has different needs for their lighting, but after a couple of attempts to automate our under cabinet lighting, I opted for a non-automated solution. I have four different zones for under cabinet lighting, although one zone is actually above sink and another zone is above working area countertop. I used the LED puck lights and touch sensors with three dimming levels. I extended the touch sensor wire to the bottom of the cabinet where I attached it to a length of copper tape that I ran the length of the bottom of the cabinet. Now, touching the bottom of the cabinet anywhere turns the lights on like you were touching the touch sensor. The tape is unseen and the installation very clean. Again, its not automated, but it works better for us than automation. -
I've replaced the 2475DA1 the "old fashioned" way. Not much chatter here. It would be helpful for future "searchers" if anyone can confirm that the 2475DA1 is NOT a direct replacement for the 2475D. H
-
paulbates, yes, that's what I've done (with the exception of "remove from folder", not necessary). Right clicking on the the 2475D and selecting "replace with" shows the only other 2475D that I have. Brian H, I have that suspicion as well. hyounker

I had a 2475D go bad. When I replaced it with a 2475DA1, the 2475DA1 doesn't show up as an option to replace the original 2475D. Looking at smarthome.com, there doesn't seem to be any other options for in-line switching. Is there any way to make this replacement work? My system seems to work for many months, then when something breaks, I have to learn everything all over again! And I'm not getting any younger! Thanks in advance for any help. hyounker

Michel, I cleared the Java cache and followed the link. Is this in an attempt to resolve the problem with newly created scenes not showing up in the list? Thanks, hyounker

This morning, I have a slight change in symptoms. It looks like the buttons on the two KPLs will remain in sync, if one of the buttons is pushed to turn the pool light on. However, if I turn the pool light on via RemoteLinc or the admin console, the KPLs do not respond, but the light comes on. I've also noticed that occasionally, when creating a new scene, the new scene does not show up in the main list until I exit out of the admin console, then open it again. It doesn't behave like that every time, just occasionally. Not sure if that has anything to do with the other problem or not. I have submitted a ticket for help from UDI, but thought I'd add this change here. hyounker

Ok. Thanks for the help. Maybe I can relay the solution back here to maybe help others in the future. LeeG, do you remember the problem I had last week that started all this? It was the problem where my programs with scenes would not work properly. You mentioned, with this latest problem, that AV might be a possibility. I'm still wondering if the new router is the root of this evil. Thanks again for your help. hyounker

When I right click on the KPL and chose Diagnostics / Show Device Links Table, I instantly get a new window. There is nothing displayed in this window, but I have several buttons available at the bottom of the window: Start/Stop/Save/Load/Count/Compare/Close I do not see a list, as you have provided in your last post. hyounker

LeeG, I appreciate the help, but you are talking over my head on this one. Can you provide more details? I went to Button A of each KPL and right clicked, which gave me the "Show Device Links", and that pop-up offers a "Compare" button. But, I have no idea where to go from there. I've tried a few obvious things, but it didn't result in anything that looked usable to me. Thanks again for spending some time with my problem on this holiday. Happy Memorial Day! hyounker

Can either KeypadLinc button turn the InLineLinc On and Off? Both KeypadLinc buttons are able to turn the InLineLinc on and off successfully. If yes is the problem that the other KeypadLinc button does not reflect the On/Off status established by the KeypadLinc turning the InLineLinc On and Off. Yes, the problem is that the KPL buttons do not accurately and reliably reflect the on/off status of the OnLineLinc. If I turn the OnLineLinc on with the BSMNT KPL button, the BRKFST KPL button does not turn on. If both KeypadLinc buttons will turn the InLineLinc On and Off, neither KeypadLinc button will reflect the action of the other Correct. Are there any Green Icons to the left of the KeypadLinc nodes No. The only icon is the little "KPL" looking icon with the different color "buttons" on it.

In reading some other posts, I think it reasonable to suspect that one might believe that I have communications problems, possibly between KPLs. Here's some more details. One of the KPLs is on the main floor of the house in our breakfast area (BRKFST KPL) and the other is nearly right underneath the BRKFST KPL, in the basement (BSMNT KPL). The InLineLinc is outside in a watertight box, and again, worked perfectly for quite some time. In an effort to prove that communications is not my problem, I added a button from each KPL to a 4 way light scene, both as controllers. In this configuration, the buttons/LEDs behave as expected. They come on and go off as the state of the 4 way light scene changes. I'm not sure if this proves that communications is okay or not. Thanks again, hyounker

As a brief recap, last week I really messed up my ISY somehow. I am in the process of completely starting over with my Insteon network. I did a factory reset on my PLM (2413S) and my ISY-99i. Firmware/UI 3.3.10 I have reentered every device and set up all my 3 way and 4 way switches. All went well there. But, this morning I have been trying to set up some controls for various things and I cannot get KPL buttons to behave correctly. As one example, I have two KPLs that I want to use to control our pool light. The pool light is wired to an InLineLinc. I have created a scene and added the InLineLinc as responder and one button from each KPL as controller. With this, I cannot reliably determine the state of the InLineLinc by looking at those KPL buttons. This scene is something that worked perfectly for over a year prior to my catastrophic problems from last week. Am I missing something here? I have the same problem trying to control our pool pump and our backyard DC lighting in the same manner. Thanks in advance for any help. hyounker

LeeG, You've jarred my memory on what is probably another stupid mistake that I made. After moving the ISY, I upgraded from 3.2.6 to 3.3.10. I cannot remember if I was having the scenes problem then or not, but something tells me that I didn't know of the problem yet. I don't think that I would have taken such a step in the middle of a problem like this. So, my backup is 3.2.6, and my current operating version is 3.3.10. However, the backup that is for 3.2.6 is only 56 bytes in file size (yes, bytes. Not kbytes, or mbytes). A backup that I took for comparison with the 3.3.10 is 17.5 kbytes in file size. I'm not sure what to do from here. I'm thinking that I might need to take some really good notes and start over from scratch. I'm sure that will take a lot of time, but I doubt my setup is as elaborate as many of yours. H
-
If you mean by selecting it in the menu presented during the "Restore ISY" function, then that is not accepting the file either. I get an error "Could Not Retrieve File...". I don't know of any other way to restore. There's not much detail in the user's guide and I couldn't find any specifics in the forum. H
-
Well, now it looks like I have real problems. I tried to use a backup from Wednesday, which was right before I moved the ISY. Both Windows 7 and WinZip is telling me that this is not a "valid archive". Great. Unfortunately, I decided Wednesday to clean up my ISY backup folder and deleted all my other backups. Yes, bonehead move for sure. That'll never happen again! I'm assuming that my only option at this point is a fresh start? Wow. I was hoping to get outside this weekend! hyounker

LeeG, Thanks for the help. The good news is that the count is the same each of the 4 times. The bad news, I think, is that the count is "0" each time. Thanks, H

Ok, thanks for the help. I made it home and started testing the "scene" problem that I mentioned in my last post. My problem appears to be scene related. I cannot get any programs with scenes to work. Other programs, without scenes, are working perfectly. I moved the ISY back to the original location (hidden near a wireless AP). I have it connected to the wireless AP with a CAT5 cable (LAN port) and the PLM is in the same outlet as it was before the move. With the ISY and PLM back to the original place, I have the same problem with scenes in programs. Thanks, H

I'll try that when I get home, but keep in mind that from the Admin Console, I have complete control of every device, individually, in my Insteon network, without failure, from the "Main" page. The PLM is plugged directly into an outlet that is connected directly to the breaker panel 2 feet above it. The only equipment in the room is as follows: Network Switch inside structured media box about 5 feet away from PLM. UPS that is used to protect all these devices from power failure/surges (other than PLM). Sonos Connect and associated stereo receiver (just installed this yesterday, had problems before this was installed). UDI ISY-99i also located inside structured media box. Surge protected outlet strip inside structured media box, plugged into UPS. Though I did discover something else that needs more research. I was able to go to programs and "Run Then" on some of the programs with success. However, it appeared that I was unable to successfully "Run Then", any program that had a scene in it. I'll look into this further when I get back home. Maybe that will help in deciphering this problem. Thanks, hyounker

I've made some changes to our home network and now I'm having some troubles with programs that are triggered by state changes. We switched from dsl to U-verse internet and they provided a new modem/router. I also added another wireless AP and I relocated the ISY to the central networking closet. In the admin console, I can turn all devices on and off. If I look at the event viewer, level 3 while turning things on and off, I get zero data. I'm guessing that maybe I have some sort of firewall issue with the new modem/router. I'm not sure how to procede from here. Also, in the past, I would access the admin console by typing the IP address in the address line of my browser. That would produce the big blue UDI window. From there, I would click on "Admin Console" and the admin console would open up. Clicking "Admin Console" doesn't work anymore. I have to go to "Settings" and "Install Admin Console" every time now. Thanks in advance for any help. hyounker

Now that I am past my notification problem, I want to get back to my original project. I am setting up an I/O linc and an Auber PID to help report a rising temperature condition inside our freezer to the ISY. The PID closes a set of contacts any time the temperature rises above 20 degrees F. I've connnected the PID contacts to an I/O Linc. I want the ISY to send me an email when the temperature in the freezer is above 20 degrees F (Closed contacts) for 10 minutes or more. I'm not sure how to tell the ISY to recognize the change in condition, and wait 10 minutes before checking again and then reacting if the conditions are still met. I did some searching for some examples, but I'm not sure of the terminology, so I'm not sure what to search for. Nothing seemed to fit this example. Can anyone point to another post with similar goals? Or, provide some samples? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. hyounker

Just finished a 2 minute support session with Darrell from Universal Devices and he fixed my problem instantly. My problem was that I did not have any "Recipients" under the Settings/Groups tab. After reviewing the documentation here: http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index ... figuration the problem is clear. The first step in the "Messaging Configuration" is "SMTP Configuration". AFTER the SMTP Configuration, is a detailed explanation of entering "Recipients". I never got past the "SMTP Configuration", so I never got to "Recipients". Being a newcomer to the ISY, I was driving in the dark with this setup information. I had no idea that the test was going to generate a test email. I guess I was assuming that the ISY was verifying that it could connect with the SMTP server and would deliver a "Pass" message on the screen, as it did so quickly for a "Fail". Some obvious suggestions would be to make a documentation change in the SMTP Configuration page that would warn that the test button would generate a test email (instead of a "notification" which is only ISY speak, not real world speak) and will not work unless a Recipient is entered under "Groups" (which is also a strange name from a beginners standpoint). A page that would spell out the requirements for a test email would also help to clear this up. The button could also be labeled better. For instance, "Send Test Email", would be a much better label than "Test". Thanks to all for the help. I learned a few other things along the way and am hopeful that some other newbies will find this string and get through this problem a little quicker than I did. hyounker

My apologies to everyone. I started out on vacation, but had to return early due to my son's health. He mysteriously developed a spleen laceration while the wife and I were in Vegas. Of course!!! The timing of a 16 year old!!! All's well now, so I am hoping to resolve this email issue. Thanks to everyone for helping. I went back and reviewed the previous posts and tried all the suggestions again. The only thing I did not answer was a question from Xathros. My UPNP setting in my router is set to "Disabled". Also, in your last post, you asked me to try some other things. I disabled the SPI firewall and no filters were checked. Retrying resulted in the same timeout error. I do not have a red exclamation mark in the time server area. Again, I have abandoned my custom email settings until I get the default settings to pass the test. I have all the hardware in place for my freezer monitoring project (see my first post in this thread). I just need to get my ISY sending emails. Thanks again for all the help, hyounker

Xathros, I am currently in DHCP, so there is no gateway setting on the ISY. In the router, I see the ISY's leased address, 192.168.1.104, in both the Active Client list and the DHCP list. I also noticed that the Active Client list refreshes itself every so often, dropping a few IP addresses (including the ISY), then replacing them. I am assuming this is normal. Do you know what versions of DD-WRT that you've had success with in the past? Can you confirm that using the "Default" settings in the ISY for setting up notifications is reliable? Thanks again for the help. H

Can anyone confirm the reliability of the "Default" settings when setting up notifications? I am getting alot of advise that would seem to indicate that the forum as a whole has very little confidence in the "Default" settings. Thanks, H
