  1. Thanks I'll check HouseLinc I have it already just not using it. Well the bulb is the Insteon LED Bulb, I don't think they call it Bulb Linc? It's the Insteon one, and yeah the switch was off. I prob won't keep it there but I used to have a Switchlinc in the room and no one ever turns the shower light on just because it's not really necessary, but it looks much nicer when on. So I had made a scene to turn it on when you turn the switchlinc on. I must have turned it off when I put the wall cover back on yesterday after finally deciding I was done changing this section around. And yes I mean the IO Linc, I call it Garage linc because Insteon calls it the "I/O Linc Garage Door Control and Status Kit". I know that it's not RF but what would that matter? Shouldn't it be more reliable being powerline only? What I was saying was when I had the PLM in the basement on phase 2 (where the IO Linc is phase 1), it would not add to the ISY no matter what I'd try, even though when I had the ISY a month or so ago it worked fine. Only when I moved the PLM upstairs and also had it on phase 1 would it actually add and work. I was just adding it here to find out what phase it is on. Been fine ever since then. I guess what still is confusing to me, is as you can see I have basically 3 dual band devices on phase 1 on the first floor, and then 2 that are phase 2 (with a KPL coming soon that will be one of them as well) so pretty covered. The second and third floors are phase 1 only. So is it more that ideally we want traffic to be able to take both paths or phases, so having another lamplinc on the second floor or second and third which is on phase 2 would be more beneficial as each area of the house would then be covered by both phases?
  2. All the ones in the photo are dual band (no device in my network is older than 2 months). LL is a LampLinc, SL is SwitchLinc, PLM is that, KPL is KeyPadLinc, and GL is GarageLinc. I can add the RF only devices if that helps at all, like on the 3rd floor is a LED bulb in the shower, but whenever I start up the admin console it always says Cannot Communicate with Shower LED. So seems something is up there. It's pretty easy to figure out which is which by doing the test. If you put the PLM in test mode, any that flash red are on the same phase, with green being another. The KPLs if on another phase don't respond. If they are on the same phase then all 4 of their buttons flash. So when I'd put the PLM in test mode, the SwitchLinc's, LampLinc on the 2nd floor, and KPL on the 3rd floor all flash red (KPL flashes white). If I put the KPL in the first floor in test mode, the LampLinc on the first floor also flashes red to indicate they are on the same phase etc. You can also test the KPLs easily by putting them in test mode and seeing how everything else responds. Putting the first floro KPL in test mod as well causes the SwitchLinc's and so on to flash green, meaning they are on a separate phase. So are you saying that ideally I should have at least 1 more device on floor 2 and 3 that are phase 2? Challenge is that there's no where that I really want any other devices so would be just buying a range extender vs something that does dual purpose which is too bad. I wish there was an easy way to test phase on existing light switches as I'd definitely add more SwitchLinc's to the second floor, but that means removing my Z-Wave ones, so don't want to do all that just to find they are still phase 1 as well, which I assume they are as most lights that have SwitchLinc or Z-Wave on them right now are on the same breaker. One alone turns off half the basement, most of the first floor, the 2nd floor bathroom, and the 3rd floor bathroom. Just again lastly to confirm, there's no where on the ISY I can do some kind of test right where it actually gives me a numerical result? Like tries to send a command 100 times to a device and reports how many times it failed etc?
  3. Thanks guys, I'm just waiting for a KPL to be delivered today to test it, but I've drawn out a floor plan of the house with all the dual band devices and done the tests on them. I'm not really sure what it accomplishes though. I'll scan the image after once I get the KPL, but basically it's showing that: First Floor: PLM, SwitchLinc, SwitchLinc, GarageLinc IOLinc are all on one phase (we'll call it phase 1). LampLinc plug in dimmer, and a KPL are on phase 2. Second Floor: LampLinc plug in dimmer is on phase 1. Third Floor: KPL is on phase 1 So I don't know what that means lol. Like most are on phase 1, with nothing on phase 2 on the 2nd or 3rd floor. The outlet in my basement where I used to have the PLM I tested with a LampLinc and it is on phase 2. I was having issues where the GarageLinc wouldn't work properly at all, but moving the PLM upstairs where it's on phase 1 now seemed to resolve that issue. I guess where I'm confused is the only place I seem to possibly have any issues, is on the 3rd floor. The KPL if set to turn on and off every second, is a bit slow sometimes, like on 2 seconds, off half a second, on half a second, off a full second, on a full second, etc. Or the RemoteLinc sometimes you have to press it twice to turn the LED bulb on in my lamp (happens maybe 1 in 15 times). Quick edit, just uploaded the floor plan quick, super rough obv but gave up trying to do it on the computer since this took 2 mins. Dimensions are just rough, but the first and second floor are basically 20 x 40 feet or so, then the garage is separate from the house by maybe 15 feet in the back yard. The 3rd floor is probably half the size of the other floors, then the basement is the same 20x40 as well but there's no dual band devices down there so just ignored it. The KPL on the left on floor 1 is the one I'm installing today so not sure what it is on, but guessing 1 as well as it seems there's pretty much 2 breakers I use when changing the lights, maybe 3 actually. I'll post once I get that KPL. Obviously as well there's more outlets throughout the house and switches where I could move things but the way I have it right now is mostly good, as the 2nd floor is mostly Z-Wave same with the 3rd. So only observation I'd see is that there's nothing with phase 2 on the 2nd or 3rd floor. So just still not clear on what benefit there is to say adding another LampLinc or something to the 2nd or 3rd floor that's on phase 2. Or is the goal to ideally have a mix of phase 1 and 2 on both floors? Just looking at floor 1 I'm not sure how many other phase 2 devices I could put as there's only 1 lamp here, then all switches aside from 2 are Insteon with the other 2 being Z-Wave and on the same circuit as the phase 1 switches anyway. Thanks everyone!
  4. Thanks everyone. No my house is maybe 8 years old so I have a neutral but the basement was unfinished, so my Dad finished it with me as he built their house 30 years ago or whatever and he's really handy etc. Except when I went down the other day and realized there's no neutral wire on any of the new outlets he did down there, and when I called him about it he said he's never heard of it lol. Whoops So I saw those ones that don't need a neutral and thought they would be good for the basement. When you say the load has to be incandescent, do you mean like incandescent old school style light bulbs? I only have LED bulbs in my house. Every normal bulb or compact fluorescent were all removed a couple years ago for LED. Not really a huge deal as we don't use the basement that often so not critical but just thought that might be an option for me.
  5. Just curious as I just noticed there's a Switchlinc model that is RF only for places without a neutral wire. It's $49.99 which is the same price as the normal Switchlinc. I know the 2477D is dual band, but if you don't connect the neutral, does it operate like one of the RF only ones? Or does it not work at all? Just wondering since they are the same price it seems like it would make sense to buy the 2477D one just in case things ever move around etc. (My basement doesn't have a neutral as my Dad finished it for me and had never heard of it).
  6. I think I'm a bit lost still lol. Like I'm doing all the tests and I'll post the results after, but they sort of change sometimes. Like it seems the KPL x 2 and Switchlinc x 2 on the main floor are all on the same one, with the KPL in the master bedroom on another, but it's weird because for example if I put the KPL in the master bedroom into the test mode, the LampLinc on the 2nd floor (literally 15 feet away) does nothing. If however I put that same LampLinc into test mode, then the KPL in the master flashes all lights on and off over and over. Maybe I'll make a chart after showing what happens when I put each device into test mode. Where I'm just confused though is based on what I'm finding, there's a lot of devices on one phase possibly 4-6, and then just 2 on the other phase. Shouldn't that be enough to have everything covered though? Or when I put the master KPL into test mode and the LampLinc on the 2nd floor doesn't respond, but the KPL does if the LampLinc is in test mode, would that be an indication right there that there's an issue, as in should all powerline devices respond when one goes into test mode assuming they are all connected properly?
  7. Awesome thanks! Glad there's ways to actually test it. Was hoping it wasn't a matter of just knowing and moving devices around hoping for the best lol. Especially since things mostly seem to work fine right now so hard to compare if it's working perfect or not. I tried the 4 press on the PLM test. Didn't check all devices but on the first floor all my switches on the wall flash red, as does a lamplinc on the 2nd floor. The lamplinc on the first floor flashes green so I assume that means it's separate. The KPLs don't do anything same with the Garage IOLinc they just sit there so I'll check those books. I'll also check to see about the bridging test. The links in here are outdated but found this which seems helpful http://support.cortexa.com/portal/cortexasupport/ViewAttachment.do?blockId=fb53d1857186cf1f919b76d0252aa4a91559198a4dcd9882&fileName=InsteonBridgingPhases.pdf&zgId=15e427a70defa0cb&downloadType=uploadedFile&isSupAttach=true
  8. TO the other thing though too to watch is that while doing it your way will work for the lamp, it won't if you just want to turn the KPL light on. For example, I have it set that after 9pm if the doors in the house open, flash KPL button A in my bedroom 5 times then stay on for 5 minutes so that I know the door opened if I'm in bed as my bedroom is 3 floors up. The scene I have "KPL Door Status" includes the KPL button as a responder only with no controllers in the scene. If the door opens, my program triggers that scene to go on for 1 second, off for 1 second, on, off etc then stay on for 5 minutes and turn off which makes the light flash. Where this would be problematic in your method is say my KPL button A is also set up the way you have it, controller and responder of a lamp, if I have the lamp off and the door opens, by turning that scene on and off, the lamp will also flash on and off and stay on with the KPL for 5 minutes. Not really the best example as my KPL button is dedicated just to this purpose. But the point is by having a KPL button as just a responder, you can make it turn on or off whenever you want and not have it actually turn a device on with it. Hope that makes sense!
  9. When you say they alternate vertically and then say left side right side, are you referring to the panel? Where there's 20 or so breakers down the left and 20 on the right, so on the left side breaker 1 is leg 1, breaker 2 is leg 2 etc? Meaning have some devices connected some on leg 1 and some leg 2 ideally? Am I understanding that correctly? I didn't even think to do a repeat in the program, that's much easier than me writing turn it on turn it off turn it on, etc 10 times lol.
  10. Thanks! I know which are dual band, I just was writing everything I had to see if it was necessary . How do I know about the sides of the feed? Like I have a normal circuit breaker with I don't know going by memory 20-30 breakers on each side. Are the sides of the panel the side of the feed? With the 5 wired KPL/switchlincs that I have, I'm pretty sure at least both sides should be covered as they are all over the place, then I have 2 LampLinc plugin dimmers also and the GarageLinc as well. So even without knowing how to tell the sides of the feed, I'd make a guess that I have at least 1 device at minimum on one of the sides. Is there any utility or program or ISY command etc that would map out my network or run some kind of test that I could report back with that might indicate problem areas? Like everything works fine right now, I turn a light on and it comes on etc. The only one thing I do notice, which I just assumed was normal, is if I do a program where it's something like making a KPL button flash so the program is like "Start Scene A" wait 1 second "Stop Scene A" wait 1 second "Start Scene A" wait 1 second "Stop Scene A", etc it usually isn't correct. Like the KPL light comes on for a second or so, maybe turns off for like 2 seconds, flashes on for half a second like it's catching up, then off again. I just assumed it was because 1 second was too low for the network to deliver those messages, as 2 seconds works fine. I guess what I'm just getting at is could that be an indication of dead zones or network trouble? Like should it actually do it as expected, flash on and off every second? Or is it like I said, hard to do with time since the first Scene On message might take one path but the second Scene On message takes another etc? Thanks!
  11. I'm so glad I'm switching back from Z-Wave. Everything is just so much easier with the ISY and the Insteon stuff all just works so much better. Teken, when you say to get range extenders etc, are you aware of what I have right now? Can't remember if I mentioned that anywhere, but I do have some of the devices you mentioned like plug in dimmers so thought I was doing good so far! My house is 3 stories (3rd is basically just the master bedroom) and then finished basement. Right now what I have is: Basement: LED Bulb Motion Sensor (They are linked together as a scene and never controlled by anything else, so not even really an issue) First Floor: ISY and PLM 2 x KPLs one on either end of the house 2 x Switchlinc both in the middle of the house LampLinc Dimmer plug in module Garage IOLinc in the Garage, detached from the house by about 15 feet LED Bulb outside garage 2 x Motion Sensors 2 x Hidden Door Sensors Second Floor: LampLinc Dimmer plug in module Third Floor: KPL 2 x LED Bulb RemoteLinc 2 Adding the KPL to the 3rd floor fixed all issues up there with connectivity. I'm debating on ditching Vera for the ISY Z-Wave module only if someone tells me Z-Wave locks are better, otherwise I might ditch all my Z-Wave stuff which is basically right now 2 Switches on the first floor, 1 on the second floor with a motion sensor, 2 appliance outdoor type plug in devices, to turn xmas lights on etc not really anywhere right now, and then a switch in the master bedroom.
  12. Thanks so much guys I have it working now. Now that I've been playing with the KPL more it makes sense. I think I was thinking that a KPL button had to be the controller of a scene for its LED to come on, as in it had to be the device to start the scene for the LED to come on. Now I realize though that just making it the single responder and device in a scene is all you need to control the LED on it however you want. So now everything is great, seems like such a dumb question now that I understand how it works!
  13. It doesn't seem to work but it's interesting because when I would try to add a LED bulb or Remotelinc from my 3rd floor bedroom, where the closest plug in module was 1 floor down, it never would work and always would fail. So I linked the Hub to the PLM (can't add it to the ISY never works), and when I'd try to add the LED or Remotelinc, the Hub would flash non stop showing Insteon traffic, however it still would never work or add the devices, so must not work. I then moved one of my KPLs from the first floor (I swear, if I have to move and rewire one more light switch I'm going to lose my mind.) and now the LED and the Remotelinc add immediately no problems at all. So yeah doesn't seem like it does anything.
  14. I have a 2413S I moved it to try and it did help but then the garage door wouldn't work anymore, so moved it back downstairs. Question though can I use the Insteon Hub as an extender? It's just sitting here doing nothing. Can't add it to the ISY, but I can manually add it to the PLM and vice versa. I tried that making each other a controller/responder of one another and they successfully linked. Just wondering if plugging the Hub in somewhere on the 3rd floor would relay commands or if it would serve no purpose?
  15. Okay thanks I will later. I factory reset the ISY, PLM and IOLinc and it still doesn't work. Adds it for a few minutes then says again Cannot communicate with 2F.8D.28 - Sensor. Please check connections. Will contact support after work, thanks!
  16. Okay thanks. I thought it was like Vera where a motion sensor checks in every 30 minutes and if there's updates it receives them. I can't make it work at all now for some reason though. I removed the IOLinc and factory reset it, but now I cannot link it to the ISY no matter what I do. Tried to reboot the ISY but no luck. I add it and it says adding, and then after a couple minutes says: The following device could not be added: 2F.8D.28 (2450) IOLinc v.41 - Cannot determine device link table address. I'll try to move the ISY and PLM but I don't see what that would do. What is confusing to me is that when I had the ISY previously, it was the same set up as I have today, except I have more Insteon devices now, where as back then I only had a few. So like I said even if the IOLinc was a RF only device, I have devices even closer to it now than I did the last time. Just tried putting a LampLinc dimmer about 10 feet away from it just in case, but same thing. 17. Oh I forgot to mention it's not just the battery devices though. I know not much help with no logs, but the GarageLinc does it as well sometimes. Like if I try to add it to a scene, or change a setting like Trigger Reverse. Here I caught part of it when trying to add change trigger reverse, it pops up after a min "Cannot communicate with Garage Door - Sensor 2F 8D 28 1. Please check connections. Just weird because never had this issue before, garage door opener is a plug in device and even so, the KPL is maybe 10 feet away from it. I'm going to remove it as a device, factory reset it and then try to add it again as doing that for the door sensor seemed to shut it up with the errors it was getting. Will post the above here anyway just since I have it now. Thanks! Edit: Didn't work at all, now I can't even add the device it just detects it, adds it, then after a minute says cannot communicate with IOLinc - Sensor and then the Sensor and Relay both have a ! beside them.
  18. Thanks I'll try that, I'm definitely aware of the limitations of a battery device, it's just weird because I never had these problems before. Like picking write updates to device I thought was just forcing it to update, but there's nothing I need to write. I added the device to the ISY, it added and was fine, but then any time I log into the admin console it pops up saying error communicating with hidden door sensor. I've opened and closed the door a bunch of times which I thought wakes it up and then it gets any updates but I still get that error. I think I'll try also to remove it and re-add it, as I know with motion sensors etc holding it for 5 secs or so, letting go and then holding set for another 5 seconds, is different than holding it for 5 seconds letting to and then just tapping it once type thing, so I may have added it wrong as I basically just kept holding and pushing set while adding it until the ISY finally did it. Thanks!
  19. Hi everyone, hoping someone can make sense of the below. Since switching back to the ISY last night I keep getting random errors mainly with the hidden door sensor on the front door, or the garage door opener. I never had problems before and my network is basically the same as it was before but I always get random errors can't configure device etc. However they always seem to work. Like the hidden door sensor always has a ! beside the name and will pop up about can't communicate whenever I load the admin console. However it still works, like opening/closing the door reports properly and scenes trigger based on it and so on. Here's the event log level 3 when I tried to select write updates to device. First I got a pop up saying: Failed writing device link. Should I maybe delete and re-add the device? It was connected back and forth to the Vera and other controllers, but I thought adding it to the ISY selecting remove existing links would have taken care of any of those issues.
  20. Oh yeah I can rename it I just did it quick when testing, didn't think of that. This is weird though now it works totally fine. The only thing different I did was I had unplugged the ISY and moved it with the PLM from the basement to upstairs (same distance away physically from the KPL if that matters). Maybe it was just glitching earlier? Doesn't flash at all, so strange.
  21. Sure thing sorry. The scene is very basic, it's called "Living Room Lamp" and includes the KPL Button B, and Living Room Lamp Dimmerlinc. They are both controller and responder for the above scene. If I press KPL button B, it lights up and the lamp comes on and if I press it again it goes off with the lamp. I'm trying to have it so that if I turn the lamp on with a timer, or with a mobile device, the KPL button lights up. So the program I used for that is: If Status 'Living Room Lamp' is not Off Then Set Scene 'Living Room Lamp' On Else Set Scene 'Living Room Lamp' Off This works if I then use my cell phone or a timer to turn the lamp on or off, as when I turn the lamp on the KPL lights up and so on. The problem is that if I now go to the KPL and press button B to turn the lamp on, it comes on, then immediately goes off, then back on, and then back and forth in a loop flashing. The program above in the ISY you see flipping from TRUE to FALSE over and over until I disable it. What I don't get though is that in my Vera connected to the ISY, I originally made a program there as I forgot I could do it from the ISY, so on the Vera I said if the status of the lamp is on, then set the above scene on, and if it's off then set the scene off. This worked perfectly fine no looping. I deleted all the stuff in the Vera to create the above, so it's not the culprit. Thanks!
  22. Okay thanks. I thought that the dimmer lamp module would be sufficient but it only helped a little having it on the 2nd floor. I just tried moving the PLM upstairs anyway and it does seem to help so probably will leave it there since all it really needs is an Ethernet jack as right now it's basically in the middle of the house vs the basement where it's much farther from the 3rd floor.
  23. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have the ISY and the PLM in my basement in the laundry room with my other networking and server gear. I used to have a Switchlinc 4 floors up on the 3rd floor master bedroom, and as such devices worked fine anywhere in the house that were RF. Made some changes, so now the PLM is still in the basement but the Switchlincs are all on the first floor only. The second floor has 1 Dimmerlinc plug in module, and then the 3rd floor bedroom has an LED bulb and a Remotelinc 2. The devices work for the most part, but maybe 1 in 5 times the LED bulb won't respond, and the Remotelinc 2 only responds maybe 1 in 5 times. If I move the ISY and PLM up to say the 2nd floor or even the master, does the PLM do RF as well so that having it up there would help with the dead area? Or do only plug in and switch modules etc support RF? Just a pain to move it so rather ask than test first and find out it doesn't do it. Thanks!
  24. I'm having an issue with the program above, I did it basically like: if status "insteon bulblinc" is not off set "scene" on else set "scene" off Which does work if I turn the lamp on from my cell for example, however if I turn the lamp on by pressing the KPL button that is the scene controller, the lamp flashes on and off over and over until I disable the above program. Basically gets stuck in a loop on and off on and off. When I used the Vera to run this scene whenever the lamp status was on, it worked fine so not sure why it's doing it now. Any ideas?
  25. Oh you're right just checked and it is, didn't even realize there were different ones! Is that probably why they make a loud click sound when turning on and off? All my other Insteon switches are silent but these make a click. Not as loud as my Lutron motion switches but still loud enough. I'd keep these and buy the proper ones, but if the dimmer ones are silent then I'd exchange them.
