MorningLinc - cant determine insteon engine

Recommended Posts

Trying to add a new morninglinc module. I have gone as far as plugging the module directly into the same outlet at my plm. I get the 'cannot determine insteon engine' message. I have tried both letting isy choose determine the device type and chosen it from the list.

Here is my message log when adding. Anyone have ideas?

Have the Event Viewer running at LEVEL 3 in case this does not work. The UDI Wiki calls for using Start Linking when adding a MorningLinc. This is an I2CS MorningLinc but I think the procedure will be the same

Use Start Linking

Press Set button on MorningLinc for 3-5 seconds

Select the third option to keep existing links

OK, I've tried everything as well.

-Start Linking

-Add Insteon Device

-Resetting PLM Modem

I'm stuck!

Run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer at LEVEL 3. Use Start Linking as described in the UDI Wiki for adding a MorningLinc. Have the MorningLinc plugged into the PLM plug point. Be sure to follow the Wiki instructions as far as using 'keep existing links' as the MorningLinc has special security requirements other Insteon devices do not have.

Additional notes:

MorningLinc behaves as expected when linked to Mini-Remote (2342-222).

When putting the MorningLinc in Set mode, the LED flashes 4 times rapidly, then 3 times slowly, then goes solid (bright or dim).

The above output was generated by attaching the MorningLinc to the same extension cord as the Powerlinc Serial modem (2413S) to eliminate line interference as a factor.

Can anyone recommend a course of action?

Thank you.

Follow the instructions in the UDI Wiki for adding a MorningLinc

http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index ... orningLinc

Also note the trace shows Hops Left=1 which is inconsistent with having both the PLM and the MorningLinc on the same circuit. Would expect Hops Left=2 when powered from same outlet. Suggests a power strip with noise reduction may have been used.

Use Start Linking as described in the Wiki and some other means of connecting the PLM and MorningLinc to power.

Thank you for the (very quick) response. Those (Wiki) instructions are the ones I have been trying to execute. You were correct that there was a UPS on the same circuit. I moved the device combination (MorningLinc/modem) to another outlet. That cleared the 'Hops' issue, but the results appear otherwise the same:"

I successfully added a wall switch (2477S) located in the same room (actually on the same electrical circuit) to the ISY using the same configuration. The Wiki instructions to which you refer seem simple, and I have tried every reasonable permutation I can think of. Any chance the MorningLinc could be defective commiunicating with the ISY but still work with other controllers (i.e., the Mini Remote)?

Thank you, again.

The trace does not reflect what is expected.

Click Start Linking - PLM LED blinks

Press Set button on MorningLinc for 3-5 seconds

Select Keep existing links

The MorningLinc has special security linking requirements due to the nature of the function the MorningLinc provides. No sense trying other options as that will only confuse the issue.

The trace is showing command activity to the MorningLinc before the ISY is putting the PLM into linking mode as though something is being done before Start Linking is initiated which must be the first activity.
