mgithens Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 So I'm not in the habit of buying $20 apps for the iPhone... And I guess I was all pumped up when I got my ISY up and running, I pulled the trigger. So nowhere did it say there was a monthly subscription and for the life of me I can't figure out why there needs to be. I have a free service that handles dynamic DNS... I guess I don't understand what the subscription is for. Can someone please verify my understanding is correct?? App - $20 for iPhone, $50 for iPad Camera support is $5 more You get 30 days for free, then it is $5/month from now on? So for someone who is new to ISY / Mobilinc, you will spend $130 to use your apple devices for the first year?? But I can just use the web interface for free and have control of my devices - for free?? I guess all the "gotchas" really have me in a bad place.
Michel Kohanim Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Hello mgithens, Although I cannot speak with MobiLinc, but from dealing with them on a daily basis I know: You do NOT need MobiLinc Connect if you can configure remote access to your ISY. So, the total cost would be that of MobiLinc App. With kind regards, Michel
InsteonNut Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Hi mgithens, MobiLinc Connect is our service is easily connects your ISY and MobiLinc together in our cloud servers. There are many folks out there that are not comfortable with port forwarding or are willing to put in the work to understand networks, fixed IPs, dynamic DNS, router settings, firewall considerations, etc. As a result they are our current target audience for MobiLinc Connect. If you are comfortable with all the above (which it sounds like you are), then with the initial purchase price of app, you can directly connect to your ISY, no subscription necessary. With that said, we are working on a couple of features like PUSH notifications for devices/programs, defined by the user in the MobiLinc app, that will require MobiLinc Connect to make PUSH events possible. We are working to bring additional value to the Connect service that's simply not possible otherwise in addition to our current port forwarding/network solution. If you have questions of concerns, please contact us at: support@mobilinc.com Wes
eknapp Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Most cable ISPs do not continuously change the IP address. You can easily log into a home router and open s port for the ISY and save remote access service charges. You can also find software to run on a home computer that will detect the ISPs IP address and provide you updates if it changes.
BriG Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 It is massively expensive for what it is. I was in shock, because every other product I know of with a high up-front cost has a free cloud interface. Shame on me for not doing the research, but when I saw the $50 app price (which is the highest I have paid for any iOS app), I assumed that the cloud portal feature was free. Nope, that is another $30/year. It won't take long for the cost of Mobilinc to exceed the ISY.
arw01 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Then port forward your router and don't subscribe. No one is forcing you. Alan
