hyounker Posted May 24, 2013 Share Posted May 24, 2013 I've made some changes to our home network and now I'm having some troubles with programs that are triggered by state changes. We switched from dsl to U-verse internet and they provided a new modem/router. I also added another wireless AP and I relocated the ISY to the central networking closet. In the admin console, I can turn all devices on and off. If I look at the event viewer, level 3 while turning things on and off, I get zero data. I'm guessing that maybe I have some sort of firewall issue with the new modem/router. I'm not sure how to procede from here. Also, in the past, I would access the admin console by typing the IP address in the address line of my browser. That would produce the big blue UDI window. From there, I would click on "Admin Console" and the admin console would open up. Clicking "Admin Console" doesn't work anymore. I have to go to "Settings" and "Install Admin Console" every time now. While I don't know enough about such things to rule out such a possibility, I would first suspect other issues. This is your statement that concerns me: I relocated the ISY to the central networking closet. Do you use any filters? Where, and into what, is your PLM plugged? I am concerned that the networking closet is full of equipment that messes with insteon communication. To perform a quick test, get an extension cord and plug it into an outlet not on the same circuit breaker as your network closet. My preference would be to plug it into the outlet formerly used by the ISY with success. Plug the ISY (PLM, actually) into the extension cord. Does this solve your problems? Link to comment

I'll try that when I get home, but keep in mind that from the Admin Console, I have complete control of every device, individually, in my Insteon network, without failure, from the "Main" page. The PLM is plugged directly into an outlet that is connected directly to the breaker panel 2 feet above it. The only equipment in the room is as follows: Network Switch inside structured media box about 5 feet away from PLM. UPS that is used to protect all these devices from power failure/surges (other than PLM). Sonos Connect and associated stereo receiver (just installed this yesterday, had problems before this was installed). UDI ISY-99i also located inside structured media box. Surge protected outlet strip inside structured media box, plugged into UPS. Though I did discover something else that needs more research. I was able to go to programs and "Run Then" on some of the programs with success. However, it appeared that I was unable to successfully "Run Then", any program that had a scene in it. I'll look into this further when I get back home. Maybe that will help in deciphering this problem. Thanks, hyounker Link to comment
oberkc Posted May 24, 2013 Share Posted May 24, 2013 given that list of equipment (esp UPS), and your experience, I believe comm problems are your cause, not router or firewall. How long can your ups support operation of your system? Can you temporarily unplug it and see if your insteon system improves? My experience, and perception from this forum, is that you will need a filter on all that stuff in your closet for best insteon performance. Link to comment

When you control a device directly from the admin console, that is a direct command and the ISY expects an ack in response from the device and will retry several more times unless it receives the ack from the device. Scene control is different and the ISY assumes the device reacted. I think you need to filter the network devices (especially the UPS) with a filterlinc or AF120 if you expect the load may exceed 10 amps. -Xathros Link to comment
hyounker Posted May 24, 2013 Author Share Posted May 24, 2013 Ok, thanks for the help. I made it home and started testing the "scene" problem that I mentioned in my last post. My problem appears to be scene related. I cannot get any programs with scenes to work. Other programs, without scenes, are working perfectly. I moved the ISY back to the original location (hidden near a wireless AP). I have it connected to the wireless AP with a CAT5 cable (LAN port) and the PLM is in the same outlet as it was before the move. With the ISY and PLM back to the original place, I have the same problem with scenes in programs. Thanks, H Link to comment

Have you moved or added any other electronics, power strips, ups, chargers etc? Something is inhibiting communication. Run the event viewer at level 3, cycle a few devices on/off from the admin console and run a scene test or two. post the trace. -Xathros Link to comment

It sounds like the link records in the PLM have been lost. If this is true the Insteon command issued to control the Scene will end with a 15 which indicates no link records exist for the Scene in the PLM. Link to comment

LeeG Posted May 24, 2013 Share Posted May 24, 2013 The PLM has no link records for that Scene. Note the 15 on the end. This indicates the PLM has no record of that Scene. Fri 05/24/2013 04:54:41 PM : [GRP-RX ] 02 61 16 13 00 15 The normal solution is to issue a Restore Modem (PLM). After doing the Restore Modem issue a Show PLM Links Table followed by Count. Do this 4 times to insure the Count is the same each time. How many link records does the Count indicate. Link to comment

LeeG Posted May 25, 2013 Share Posted May 25, 2013 Looks like the Delete Modem (PLM) function was issued which effectively removes all references to the PLM both in the devices and the PLM itself. Need to go back to an earlier ISY backup, do another Restore Modem (PLM) followed by a Show PLM Links Table and Count to verify the earlier backup was taken before the Delete Modem (PLM). Once the PLM has been restored then a File | Restore Devices is needed to put back the references to the PLM in all the devices. Link to comment
hyounker Posted May 25, 2013 Author Share Posted May 25, 2013 Well, now it looks like I have real problems. I tried to use a backup from Wednesday, which was right before I moved the ISY. Both Windows 7 and WinZip is telling me that this is not a "valid archive". Great. Unfortunately, I decided Wednesday to clean up my ISY backup folder and deleted all my other backups. Yes, bonehead move for sure. That'll never happen again! I'm assuming that my only option at this point is a fresh start? Wow. I was hoping to get outside this weekend! hyounker Link to comment

I get an error "Could Not Retrieve File...". I don't know of any other way to restore. There's not much detail in the user's guide and I couldn't find any specifics in the forum. H Link to comment

After moving the ISY, I upgraded from 3.2.6 to 3.3.10. I cannot remember if I was having the scenes problem then or not, but something tells me that I didn't know of the problem yet. I don't think that I would have taken such a step in the middle of a problem like this. So, my backup is 3.2.6, and my current operating version is 3.3.10. However, the backup that is for 3.2.6 is only 56 bytes in file size (yes, bytes. Not kbytes, or mbytes). A backup that I took for comparison with the 3.3.10 is 17.5 kbytes in file size. I'm not sure what to do from here. I'm thinking that I might need to take some really good notes and start over from scratch. I'm sure that will take a lot of time, but I doubt my setup is as elaborate as many of yours. H Link to comment

ISY-Backup.v3.2.6__Sun 2012.10.14 11.53.17 AM.zip Without a valid backup I have no suggestion on how to recover short of starting over. Link to comment
