Need some help with basics of scenes

Hey all,

I need some help with what I think is a basic problem.

I've set up some Insteon switches for my lights and a KeypadLink for my ceiling fan. I have two specific things that I am trying to do that don't seem to be working correctly; Set up the KeypadLink for the fan correctly and set a program to dim the lights at night for the kitchen.

First, for the fan. I read the configuration post for KeypadLinks and fans. I set up a scene for each of the fan speeds (off, low, medium and high) and set all of the buttons controlling those as responders to each scene (with the appropriate led level for each button/scene combination). This all works perfectly from the ISY console when I turn on the scene, however now when I press one of the four center buttons on the actual keypad all of the buttons light up. It seems like the physical buttons are not invoking the scene in the same was as the console does.

For the kitchen lights I set up a program to adjust the on-levels of the lights in the kitchen scene from 10 pm to 6 am. Again, during that time period the program works correctly when controlling the scene from the ISY, however when I turn on the lights using the actual switch they still come on at full brightness. This too seems like the physical switch is not invoking the scene correctly.

Since these seem to be a common problem I was hoping someone would be able to point out what I am missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

and set all of the buttons controlling those as responders to each scene

I think you will find that these need to be defined as controllers, rather than responders.

Regarding the switch ON levels, remember that such levels can be defined differently, depending on controller device is invoking the scene. For example, when controlling the scene via the ISY, they could be one level. When controlled via a switch, they could be at a different level.

In you program, make sure you are setting the ON levels when the switch is acting as controller. I hope this is sufficiently intuitive, since I forget how that command appears, or how it is created.

Thanks for the info, I understand the concept but not the implementation.

Does anyone have an example of how this is set up?

I'll post some screenshots of my configuration tonight.

This is how I believe the scene is set up:

Fan - High (Scene)

Controller (Fan high button)

Responders:

Fan Motor - level high

Fan off button - level 0

Fan low button - level 0

Fan medium button - level 0

Fan high - level 100

Does that look correct?

You didn't mention a fanlinc, but I assume you have one.

This post tells you how to set up a kpl with a fanlinc. You will see that some of the setting have kpl buttons as controllers. A KPL button that is not a controller of any scene will do nothing but light up when you push it. For a button to control anything besides its own load natively (as a pure insteon device), it must be a controller of a scene.

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10312&hilit=fanlinc+setup

The concept is as follows.

You have 4 scenes, one each for high, med, low, off. You dedicate 4 kpl buttons to those 4 states.

Each kpl button is in each scene, one of them is a controller, the other 3 are responders.

For example, the "high speed" scene might use button A. So button A is a controller of the scene and sets the fanlinc to 100%. The other 3 buttons are responders and set to 0%.

the "medium speed" scene might use button B. Button B is a controller and sets the fan to whatever it needs to be for medium (like 60% I think), and the other 3 buttons are set as responders of 0%.

etc.

So in the above example, button A is the only controller of a scene with the fan and the other 3 buttons as repsonders. When you push A, the fan responds by going to 100%, and whichever of the other 3 buttons will shut off. Technically, you don't need the other 3 buttons to shut off, but it is a nice feature. This way it will only have the one button lit that corresponds to the current speed.

That looks correct to me. What firmware version is the KPL?

I think what you are missing is that each Controller of the Scene has a unique set of Responder values. You are posting the Scene definition when the Scene name is clicked which is the PLM as the Controller. That is, when the Scene is invoked from the Admin Console it works as you intend.

For the Fan - High (Scene) click on the KeypadLinc button node name below the Scene name. This is the KeypadLinc button for Fan High. You will find a unique set of Responder values for when the Controller is the KeypadLinc button. Since all the other buttons turn On the other buttons do not have the 0% On Level.

Each KeypadLinc button node name in each of the other Scenes will also have to be adjusted. For those Scene the Fan Motor speed will also have to be set to the appropriate speed for the Scene.

The key is that in Insteon each Controller (PLM is one controller, KeypadLinc button is another Controller) has a unique set of Responder values.

The only rub could be a KPL with v.41 firmware. ISY 4.0.5 works with this level KPL firmware but the KPL has to be added under 4.0.5.

EDIT: sorry, I have posted much of what apostolakisl added with his edit.

I am pretty sure that the KPL is version 4.1.

I'll have to double check. If so, I assume that I should remove it and re-add it and I am guessing there is a post on there somewhere. I'll look for it.

Thanks,

Bill
