ISY 994i / PLM 'Start Linking' Problems

I'm a new ISY 994i pro user here with problems getting up and running.

 

FYI, I have tried OSX Snow Leopard, OSX Mountain Lion, and Windows 7. I also have performed factor resets on both the ISY and the PLM, but have got the same results.

 

I can login to my ISY with no problems and the diagnostics indicate that the PLM is connected. When I choose the 'Start Linking' option, the PLM flashes and beeps and the 'Start Linking' dialog appears, but it immediately (approximately 0.1 seconds) disappears. I have checked security setting, but I can't find anything obvious: firewalls are disabled, and I have no antivirus running.

That generally means Start Linking was done before, the first Start Linking Popup did not display because of a firewall or AV problem so the Finish button cannot be clicked to terminate Start Linking. The PLM will timeout of linking mode but the ISY sits in Start Linking waiting for a device Set button press that will not be seen because the push of data from the ISY to the Admin Console is being blocked by the firewall or AV. Kaspersky, Avast and others by default will not allow the ISY to push data to the Admin Console.

 

Reboot the ISY to clear the Start Linking. Set up the firewall/AV to accept the ISY IP address as a trusted address.

Thanks for your response, but I am not running a firewall or an antivirus in my current configuration. I have even disabled my (Apple Time Capsule) router's NAT translation to make sure that its firewall isn't active.

 

I have tried rebooting the ISY and the PLM, but it didn't help. What's next?

The PLM can be tested by running Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer at LEVEL 3. Select Link Management | New INSTEON Device, enter the Insteon address of a device, Name of choice, Device Type at default Auto Discover. Click Ok. Post the event trace. If nothing appears in the event trace something is blocking the ISY pushing data to the Admin Console. If there is a PLM issue I would expect to see it in the event trace.

Thanks again, Lee. I'm not at home at the moment, but I'll give this a shot when I return this evening.

 

Is there anything that I have to do to activate Level 3 event tracing, or is that option directly available from the menu?

Thanks. I set out to add a SwitchLinc and was surprised to see that it successfully linked, though the operation generated plenty of traffic: -

The SwitchLinc is an older device (not I2CS) which takes longer to add.

 

The event trace does not show anything abnormal with the PLM when entering Start Linking. It looks like the Admin Console shutdown Start Linking for some reason.

 

What is the level of Java?

 

Check Help | About and verify both Firmware and UI lines indicate 4.0.5.

I traced a Start Linking on my system to double check my memory. It looks like your PLM did not respond to the Start Linking command as expected

Note the lack of the 06 on the end. The PLM should return an 06 or a 15. The 00 on the end of the message in your trace is not spec'ed.

In answer to your earlier questions, I'm running Java 7 update 25 on my Mac and both the UI and the firmware are 4.0.5.

 

Worth opening a support ticket with UDI, do you think?

Cannot hurt. They can confirm that an invalid PLM response will result in the Start Linking popup being removed.

 

Have you tried a factory reset of the PLM (not the ISY). If you do a factory reset of the PLM a File | Restore Modem (PLM) is required to rebuild the PLM link database.

A final update to close the loop on this: -

 

I contacted UDI Support and they very quickly responded to confirm that this was definitely a faulty PLM. I called my original supplier (Orchestrated Home) to process my warranty return and they mentioned that they had received a batch of faulty PLMs around the time I originally purchased my equipment (early December last year - I had aborted a couple of earlier attempts to set up my equipment after running out of time and I've been too busy since to commit the time to working through the problem.)

 

This experience has been very frustrating at times, but I put that largely down to bad luck. I'm sure it would have been a lot easier - and more fun - had I received a functional unit on my first encounter with ISY. Now I'm looking forward to configuring my equipment.

 

Most of all, I'm grateful for Lee's expertise and persistence in helping me trouble-shoot the cause of the problem. Thanks Lee!

Thanks James. Appreciate you taking the time to post back the resolution. There is another user who mentioned he was not able to get Start Linking to work. That was not the primary complaint but he may also have a bad PLM. Now the challenge is to find his original post. Good luck with the rest of your ISY activity. Hope you find it as good an experience as most of us have.
