Anyone have suggestions on which locks work the best with ISY, most dependable? I know all locks have a weakness but I'm hoping to purchase with the knowledge of others experience on the forum.Thanks Link to comment
oberkc Posted March 2, 2014 Share Posted March 2, 2014 I am using the morning industries lockset with the insteon morninglinc. It seemed a little finicky to set up but has been rock solid since. The downside to the morning lock is that it does not broadcast any status change...it can only be controlled. Unlocking the door manually, or from the key fob, or keypad cannot initiate any insteon action. With the introduction of the z-wave card, I understand this brings many of those options to play, but I have no first-hand experience. I understand that some z-wave locks will transmit a change in status when acted upon locally. Link to comment

Xathros Posted March 3, 2014 Share Posted March 3, 2014 My Schlage FE-599 lock sets report the following: Status: Locked, Unlocked, Bolt Position Unknown, Jammed, Responding, Battery Level (1-100%) Control: Access Code (1-30) Set: Query, Secure, Unsecure I don't think this lock set actually supports more than 16 user codes but the protocol seems to support up to 30. Setting Unsecure will unlock the lock set for a few seconds then relock it. I believe the Yale lock sets have a similar feature list but I have not tested any of those myself. -Xathros Link to comment

gatchel Posted March 4, 2014 Share Posted March 4, 2014 While I can appreciate the Morninglinc for being the first lock to integrate with insteon, I didn't purchace it originally because of just that, it was linked only to insteon. I went with a Kwikset Zwave unit. Even on the Beta, the front door, the closest to the ISY work like a charm. I have another Kwikset Z-wave deadbolt on my detached garage that works but doesn't respond and update the status in ISY. This is, I believe, a range / routing issue that may be fixed in a future release. If for some reason I decide to change gears on controllers or sell the locks, z-wave has much more flexibility than the morninglinc. (Don't plan on ever changing at this point if UDI keeps up their ways) I also emailed the manufacturer about having a Kwikset core in the lock and they didn't support them at the time. I'm not sure if this is still the case. My vote would be to support the Z-wave add on to the ISY. Link to comment
shannong Posted March 4, 2014 Share Posted March 4, 2014 A word of caution on the Kwikset models that have the "Smartkey" feature. I've been debating this one a lot with myself. I'd really like that capability and looked at many locks including Kwikset, Schlage, and Morning Industries. However, I've decided to forego a wireless lock at this point since it's only a matter of time (or is already available) before a vulnerability is exploited and somebody cruising streets with a laptop or tablet can detect and open locks that are based on Zwave, Zigbee, etc. The idea and likelihood that somebody could cruise by, detect I have an affected lock, hit a button on their tablet to unlock my door and stroll in without forced entry I find untenable. I would consider it imperative to have a security system if you're going with a wireless lock so that you would have some way to detect unwanted entry and you should definitely have it on at night while you're sleeping. I'm going to go with something that can be operated by wires and activate it via a relay with my security system. There is a hole in that I did integrate my Elk security system with my ISY. The ISY uses Insteon and Zwave. That means you could hack the ISY over Zwave/Insteon wireless and then hack at the security system over the Ethernet network. I find that attack vector too unlikely and difficult to worry about. Link to comment
MWareman Posted March 4, 2014 Share Posted March 4, 2014 Its not limited to kwikset smartkey locks. Most sub-few hundred dollar locks are relatively weak as physical security devices. It's much cheaper and easier to drive a neighborhood with a cordless drill than worry about zwave and screwdriver vulnerabilities. A security system is very necessary - don't rely on any lock alone. The only major problem with this issue is that access can be gained with no visible damage to the lock. Again, a security system fixes that. Michael. Link to comment

I don't know many people under 25 without tablet or laptop. Tablets can be had for under $100 and the hacker tools are freely downloaded from the internet. Easier to drive and press and button than stand in front of a door with a drill or other tool. Link to comment

Use SSL all of the time, even inside. Treat your LAN as untrusted and you are a long way to being well protected - even against a compromised wifi network. Cordless drill, not easy to defend against. shannong Posted March 4, 2014 Share Posted March 4, 2014 I'm considering a mortised electrical deadbolt like those from DynaLock. Nothing exposed to defeat. And I could put one at the top and bottom requiring significant force to defeat for entry. I want to wire it to a door handle with integrated keypad for open/close via a PIN. I'm having trouble finding one that has tamper sensor so that the mechanism would be disabled if opened. But then my house still has windows, too. Link to comment

There is a bit of programming involved depending on what you want to accomplish with the lock set. Nothing more complex than working with Insteon devices however. I have a few programs to secure my locks at night or when my occupancy timers expire and to write log entries when the locks are unsecured by access code or from the inside. This is one of my programs that gets called from my Secure Perimeter routine: If Status 'Basement / Basement Door Lockset' is Bolt Postion Unknown Or Status 'Basement / Basement Door Lockset' is Unlocked Then Set 'Basement / Basement Door Lockset' Secure Else - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action') -Xathros Link to comment
