bwbeisne Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Good morning. I am making good progress but have a few simple questions: 1. Does a factory reset of a device remove all links in that device? 2. What is the difference between a scene and a link? Are these synonymous?

bwbeisne Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Ok. I historically have not used scenes. I have only directly linked buttons & devices. As far as automation I simply use programs in the ISY to individually set each device to a certain level when needed. I have never really understood the idea of scenes and would like to. I feel like I'm missing out on higher level functionality. Am I? My install is simple with only 22 devices. I think it's hard to create a 'scene' with only one controlled light in a room. What am I missing? or not understanding..
LeeG Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Scenes (links) have been used all along. When a device is added to the ISY a Scene (link) is created between the device and the PLM. This is necessary for the PLM to be aware of a manual device button/paddle press. Scenes are useful when multiple devices are being controlled by the same event. Also when one device is controlling another. Press a KeypadLinc button that turns On/Off one or more devices. It is better to do this with a Scene where the KeypadLinc button is the Controller and the other device(s) is a responder. This happens faster than triggering a Program to control a device directly.

EricK Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 This would be an example for which a scene might be helpful to you. You can create an all off or away scene. Add all of your devices to it. When you leave the house, trigger the scene (via keypad button or other controller) and all of the lights turn off. This would work better than a program with a bunch of then actions to turn off the lights if the controller is activated.

If Control 'Basement / Basement Devices / KPL Basement Steps (DB) / KPL - A - Basement Lights' is switched Off Then Wait 10 minutes Set Scene 'Great Room / GR All Off' Off Else - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action')
oberkc Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Be aware, also, that what constitutes a "scene" is defined a bit different with the ISY that with the basis insteon devices. If you see "scene" used in the manuals of individual devices, that generally refers to a relationship between two devices. With the ISY, a scene can have practically unlimited number of devices. I have only directly linked buttons & devices. Are you suggesting that you have manually linked insteon devices without using the ISY...by putting one device into linking mode, and adding the responder manually. I generally find this a bad idea when one has an ISY in their system.
