Remote IP Address

Last night I lost power to the circuit that feeds my Verizon DSL modem and my router to which my ISY 99i is connected. The PLM is on a seperate circuit so did not lose power (therefore ISY did not lose power). As my modem rebooted it obtained a new remote IP address from Verizon as you would expect. Couple of questions:

1) When going to the ISY help menu it showed the old remote IP address. It did not reflect the new IP address. The only way I could get ISY to update with the new IP address was to log in locally and then disable and then enable internet access. Shouldn't the ISY pole the router to get the latest IP address? Otherwise if I lose power again the only way to fix this is to locally execute the above procedure which is not always an option when I am travelling.

2) Does anyone know how I can get my new Verizon IP address remotely should this happen again?

Thanks

I have my own domain and use dynamic DNS to get around that issue. I used to have to run a DDNS client on my computer, but last year I was able to get my router to do it for me. So whenever my public IP address changes, my router will update its DNS entry with my domain hosting service.

Hello jwagner010,

Unfortunately, ISY does not track IP changes simply because doing so causes disruption to your other services. We could use STUN to figure out what your IP address is (a service like whatismyip.com) but this protocol is not 100% accurate especially when you are behind NAT (routers).

So, as John suggested, the best way would be to have a dynamic dns service which your router updates for you and thus you don't have to worry about it.

With kind regards,

Michel
