Set variable with date or time

I would like to request the ability to set a variable to the current date or time. I realize you might need a separate variable for each segment or the date/time like today's date would be set using 3 variables $year=2014 $month=9 $day=24. It seems like this might be very easy to implement so I'm hoping this might be possible.
