Insteon DualBand Outletlinc - Rapidly Turning On/Off

Recommended Posts

Added a fresh DualBand Outletlinc Dimmer, and I noticed on my MobilLinc it was going on/off rapidly when I turn the load off (there is a floor lamp plugged into it with the key).  It has two bulbs in the lamp, and a rocker switch to control weather it's  one bulb, off, or both bulbs.

I've deleted the device from my network as I'm pretty sure it was causing some congestion when attempting to use some RF only devices, however I still see it trying to communicate with the ISY, and before I got through the trouble of resetting it (have to move furniture, get two people, etc) I figured I'd check on here to see what else I should anticipate.  Here are my logs showing lots of traffic from it:

I've upgraded to 4.2.21, and it did NOT change anything on the logs; but it does show System Busy dialogs all the time now........help  :|

Device 2B.C3.17 is cycling between Off and On.  Something in the load the OutletLinc does not like.   Either because of noise generated by the load or its location on the powerline comm with the OutletLinc is also poor (Max Hops=3, Hops Left=0).

Mon 12/22/2014 19:32:42 : [INST-SRX    ] 02 50 2B.C3.17 00.00.01 C3 11 00    LTONRR (00)

With a new ISY image all the devices are being queried for status (System Busy).  All the activity from the OutletLinc is likely slowing down those initial status query operations.

Difficult to suggest a solution until the the nature of the problem is understood.  It seems likely the load is not simple incandescent lights.   If CFL or LED load the solution would be a different type of load.

For the Max Hops=3, Hops Left=0, that could be a load issue also.   Once the On/Off cycling is resolved then look at the Hops Left problem.  How is the Insteon network overall?  There could be need for better coupling between 120v legs.  Need more information.

So verified that I do have 2 x incandescent bulbs in the load, so that should be good.

Since I deleted the module (Outletlinc Dimmer Dual Band) from the ISY Network, I went ahead and did a start linking, and re-linked it removing any previous links.

I updated associated scenes/controls/programs with the module now in play and my logs seems better, and I don't see any rapid activity coming from it any more.  New logs:

One thing that I notice that is a bit weird though is the "Duplicate or ACK from a different device when I turn that specific module (2B.C3.17 = Dual Band OutletLinc Dimmer) on or off:

The PLM echo's back the serial command just received.   It is sending two echo messages which is not normal.  The PLM may well be at a failure point.   See if other device On/Off commands do the same.

However I've found how to re-produce the rapid on/off condition:

If I leave the Dual Band Outletlinc ON, and turn the load locally to the OFF position - it makes the module go nuts (on/off/on/off/on/off....etc) forever until I turn the load (floor lamp) back on, and then turn it off via the Outletlinc module.  Thoughts?

If they're incandescent bulbs and there's nothing special about the lamp the bulbs are screwed into, then turning the switch off locally and unplugging the lamp are equivalent. What is the result if you unplug the lamp while the bulbs are lit?

OK, I'll add another test in the event that unplugging the lamp doesn't do anything (i.e., the Outlet doesn't turn On/Off). With the lamp plugged in and lit, unscrew the bulbs (use a towel or something, they'll be hot, hot, hot) and turn the switch off.

With that being the only device producing duplicate PLM ACK I suggest a Factory Reset of the PLM followed by a File | Restore Modem (PLM).  There must be something in the PLM link database causing the duplicate PLM ACKs.

The OutletLinc Dimmer has load sense so either turning the lamp Off is not removing all the load or load sense is not working correctly.

Is that OutletLinc part of a chain of outlets on the same circuit?

Lee:  It's in a bed room so at the very least it's part of the other outlet (non insteon) on the adjacent wall.  That non-insteon outlet is setup with one plug always ON, and the bottom is switched; the switch in this equation is a SwitchLinc (2 wire dimmer insteon).  So when you ON the switchlinc it will turn ON the bottom outlet which has a floor lamp on it; if you FAST ON the SwitchLinc it will light up the Dual-Band Dimmer on the adjacent wall with the other floor lamp on it.

I can try the PLM Reset/Restore over the holidays if you think it's worthwhile.

I don't know of anything else to try to eliminate the duplicate PLM ACK.   That is all serial communication (no device interaction associated with that serial command ACK).  I do not think it is a PLM failure when only one device serial command is producing a duplicate ACK.  I don't think the duplicate ACK is actually causing a failure (besides the duplicate message itself) so you could ignore the situation for now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lee:  I've ran your test finally; here's the full scenario

1.  FAST-ON 2-wire dimmer to trigger one non-insteon outlet with floor lamp to turn on to 100%, and FAST-ON Dual-Band Insteon outlet to 100%.

2.  Turn local rocker switch to floor lamp plugged into the Dual-Band Insteon

3.  FAST-OFF 2-wire dimmer to turn off non-insteon floor lamp

4.  Dim to on about 20% the 2-wire dimmer to turn on/dimmly lit the non-insteon outlet with the floor lamp

-This triggers the Dual-Band insteon to go nuts (on/off raipidly)

Now if I unplug the floor lamp that is on the dual-band insteon outlet, it will stop going on/off rapidly.  So I'm guessing it has to do with the floor lamp's switch.  It has a three-way rocker switch on it, UP = single bulb ON, MIDDLE = OFF, DOWN = both bulbs ON

It is dangerous to control any outlet with a dimmer. If someone, for example, unbeknownst to you, for some reason plugged in a vacuum cleaner, a fire may start in the wall. That power is coming from a 2-wire dimmer makes it even more unsafe.

Not only is it not in compliance with the electric code, your insurance may be affected.

If the dimmer is powering an outlet, then you have enough wiring in place to install a SwitchLinc dimmer and an OutletLinc Dimmer. The OutletLinc Dimmer includes a key to prevent plugging in an inappropriate device.

Nope. You would reconnect the two wires in the switch box to be line and neutral and Install a SwitchLinc Dimmer, capping the load (red) wire. And an OutletLinc Dimmer in place of the standard duplex receptacle.

The 2-wire SwitchLinc is safe to use and is in compliance with the electric code only if it's used to control a wired-in incandescent light such as a ceiling fixture.

Here's a sketch of how I believe it's wired up:

post-4877-0-85511400-1420251261_thumb.jpg

2-wire rf is in place due to only having two wires; hot and not hot....

In your configuration you would get a SwitchLinc Dimmer - however I do not have a Neutral...at least I'm assuming that the wire that's not hot, isn't neutral as there are only two wires in that box...

At the standard outlet box:

Reconnect the black and white wires going to the switch so that they are line and neutral, respectively. Most likely, that means to connect all the white wires together and, separately, connect all the black wires together, including those of the OutletLinc Dimmer. If you're unsure, then describe the wires in that box.

At the switch box:

Install a SwitchLinc dimmer. The existing white wire is now neutral. The existing black wire is now line. Cap the red wire.

Create a scene where the SwitchLinc Dimmer is a controller. The OutletLinc Dimmers can be responders only or controllers.

Alternate solution:

Install a 6-button KeypadLinc Dimmer at the switch box instead of the SwitchLinc Dimmer and gain control of each outlet individually. You could even have a button that controls both concurrently (e.g., the main On/Off buttons). And you'll have two buttons left over
