raptor Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I'm trying to add 2 new sensors to my ISY but keep getting errors. When adding 2842 motion sensor I got cannot determined insteon engine at first but now getting cannot determine devices type. And when adding Insteon hidden door switch I get cannot determine Insteon devices type. I make sure they are in pairing mode and place them inches from the ISY
Teken Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 You meant they are next to the dual band PLM right? Also you must press the link (whirling arrows) then press the set button to one sensor at a time. This assumes you don't use the device ID method. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
LeeG Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Is the PLM a 2412 or 2413? Try factory reset of one motion sensor. Put it into linking mode with Set button. Run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer at LEVEL 3. Use New INSTEON Device and post the event trace.
raptor Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 I factory reset the motion sensor, put it in pairing mode and put it a few inches from the PLM (2412s) . Brian H Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) 2412S is not Dual Band so it has no Insteon RF receiver in it. To receive the Motion Sensors or Hidden Door Sensors RF signals. So another Dual Band Module maybe receiving it but the power line signals are not getting back to the 2412S. If you have no Access Points, Range Extenders or a Dual Band devices. No Insteon RF communications will happen. Since you have a 2412S PLM. Are you using an ISY99i or ISY994i? Due to firmware storage limitations in the ISY99i. The latest firmware that supports the newest Insteon Devices can't be loaded into it. So the latest Insteon Modules will not work correctly with an ISY99i. The upgrade from a ISY99i to ISY994i offer is still showing on the UDI direct sales page. Edited December 24, 2014 by Brian H
LeeG Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 The 2412 PLM is powerline only, no RF capability. The motion sensor will have to be positioned near a Dual Band device. The event trace shows no response from the motion sensor which is expected since it is not near a Dual Band device. Are you running a 99i or 994i? The 99i does not support the Hidden Door Sensor.
raptor Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 Also have a 2443. Should that one work because I tried putting beside it but nothing. I'm running the 99i so I guess I'm out of luck with the door sensor.

The device signature listing is not in the last firmware release. The basic upgrade is $99.XX USD and you will need to use the AP regardless at some point even if you have a 2413S later on. As you need to couple / bridge both sides of the electrical feed.
raptor Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 I can see to find were to upgrade the firmware. I've done it before but can't remember how
LeeG Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) How many 2443 Access Points (ones without black external antenna) are being used? Since the PLM is not Dual Band it will take two Access Points to couple the 120v legs. If the Access Point is on the opposite 120v leg to the PLM and is the only Access Point the motion sensor RF will not be coupled to the PLM. Edited December 24, 2014 by LeeG
Brian H Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 The last firmware for the ISY99i was 3.3.10. If you have it in your ISY99i. There are no newer versions.

LeeG Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Does the 4 tap Set button test show the Access Points on opposite 120v legs?
raptor Posted December 25, 2014 Author Posted December 25, 2014 I just checked and they are on opposite phases
LeeG Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 The procedure for adding motion sensor Temporarily plug Access Point into PLM passthru outlet Use New INSTEON Device. Enter Insteon address of motion sensor Name of your choice Device Type - leave as Auto Discover Before clicking Ok manually put motion sensor into linking mode with Set buttonPosition motion sensor within a few feet of PLM Click Ok on New INSTEON Device Would be good to have Event Trace running at LEVEL 3 for documentation if add does not work
raptor Posted December 26, 2014 Author Posted December 26, 2014 That's the way In was doing it but this time for device type I put the actual device instead of auto discover and it worked.
