Organizational structure question

I'm the "Location and then device / purpose" type. I've been able to put the scenes in with the locations, though that's sometimes a difficult choice.

Name consistency helps too, and again I have to work at that sometimes. I try to keep the keypad key names to their labels, etc. I try to have the programs basically follow this structure, but again not always possible.

Yeh, agreed I don't think any one approach covers all cases.

I would would keep leak sensors in the same way if i had them. I like keeping my battery panic devices all in one central spot so I don't have to look around for them. Even with messages sent by programs, I like the idea of them being together.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I'm relatively new to ISY, and would appreciate getting thoughts on naming/labeling conventions for devices, scenes, programs, etc. (not being much of a programmer) thanks

I follow Paul's style with rooms for programs and devices.

One caveat though. Mobilinc doesn't show folders and only end devices so I break my usual room prefix style  with device prefixes by using labels such as

MS.GathRm,

MS.MBR,

Dark.Libr,

Dark.LLand

so that MobiLinc shows all the MS units together without room folder prefixes whereas Admin Console shows them by room folder prefixes such as

Master Bedroom/MS.MBR,

Gathering Room/Dark.GathRm

Common items like general mult-use subroutines and time keeping gets their own folders like they were another room in the house.

One consideration is what your end state is going to be. Will you end up with approx. 20 devices or do you plan to convert the whole house and have 100+? A complicated structure for 20 devices and handful of programs probably is overkill.

I use the following structure for devices/scenes.

-Floor (e.g. 2nd Floor)

 - Room

       -Devices

       -Scenes

-House Scenes

-Occupancy Scenes

-Mobilinc Scenes

House scenes are things like all outside lights or the Xmas lights where the devices aren't associated with a single room.

Occupancy Scenes are things like Away scenes, Sleep scenes, etc.

Mobilinc Scenes is as it sounds. Basically it gives me a Favorites in Mobilinc through ISY in addition to the Mobilinc Favorites option.

I keep my Z-wave thermostats in the root of the device tree.

My program folders are grouped by function, not location.

-Lighting Controls and Timer (timers to turn off lights, turning on lights at dusk, etc)

    -Floor

       -Room1

       -Room2

-Garage Door

-HVAC

-IR Triggers

-Leak Sensors

-Low Battery and Heartbeats

-Mobilinc

-Occupancy Scenes

-TOD (programs to determine time of day, dark vs light, weekday vs weekend, etc)

   -Away

   -Sleep

   -Guest

   -Vacation

-Security Alarm

-Security Cams

-Smoke Alerts

-Sonos

-Startup Programs

z.Archive (used to put programs I quit using. A recycle bin if you will.)

What version of Mobilinc do you use? Mine shows folders for device, scenes, and programs, etc.

Mobilinc is so slow as to be unusable for me so it basically sits unused on my phone and tablets.

I use MobiLincPro v2.02 for Android. I do not have any Apple devices. No folders in favourites. Folders do show in devices but too much hassle drilling down.
