Direct link management?

I've noticed that when the ISY displays link information that it's retrieved from devices (in the form of "scenes"), it makes no mention of links to other devices that it doesn't know about. Maybe I'm missing something that's already there, but it would be nice to be able to see and modify (or at least delete) links to "unknown" (to the ISY) devices.

Here's a real world example. I have a somewhat defective RemoteLinc which controls devices that it was linked to a while ago but no longer goes into linking mode. It's impossible for me to register this RemoteLinc with the ISY (and just to be clear, this is not the same RemoteLinc I mentioned in another thread).

I have a replacement RemoteLinc on its way to me from Smarthome. The links to the old RemoteLinc obviously need to be deleted from the devices it was controlling. How can I do this with the ISY? I hope the answer isn't to factory reset all of the devices involved. Aside from the process of rebuilding all of the other links for those devices being pretty tedious, I have to count on remembering which devices were actually linked to the RemoteLinc in question, and that's something that the ISY should already be able to find out for me by reading the link tables.

Hello Eug,

Simply link the new RemoteLinc to ISY, then under My Lighting right-click on the old RemoteLinc, choose Replace 'your old RemoteLinc name' with, and select the new RemoteLinc. ISY will do the rest.

Unfortunately, since the old RemoteLinc wouldn't go into linking mode, I couldn't get the ISY to discover it, so it's not in the database.

Yes, sorry. ISY cannot replace it if it is not in the database. At present ISY has no way of removing those dead links, though I believe that feature has been requested.

I'll second that request. If the ISY is going to be the only link manager in an Insteon system, it's pretty vital that it can show and edit all links.

Of course we want that feature. Frankly, I was surprised to learn that it wasn't already there.

Even the much maligned HomeSeer Insteon plugin has that feature, and it came in handy.

jhimmel,

To be 100% honest, we have that feature already there (90%) but we stopped mostly because any unsupervised (not system based) changes to the links means 100x the support calls and problem resolution scenarios. Unlike you and Eug, most ISYers are NOT experts in INSTEON links and what they mean and thus it's very difficult for us to include this feature.

Perhaps we implement another solution which shows you "unknown links" and asks you what you want to do with them: keep/remove? This way, ISY can still be privy of what you are intending to do and keep track of the changes.

With kind regards,

Michel

This would certainly be helpful. Even the ability to just be able to see the unkown links would go a long way towards helping with troubleshooting.

upstatemike,

Yes, I agree. Let us see what we can do ...

With kind regards,

Michel
