ISY994i and First Alert Smoke Detector

I just purchased the First Alert Smoke Detector (model Zsmoke).  I am attempting to add this device to my isy.  For reasons unknown to me.  I having a tough time adding the device to my zwave network.  I am able to get the isy to add the device.  However, the connection doesn't last long.  If I run the "heal network"  the isy disconnects from the smoke detector and I get the "fail to communicate error".

Can anyone help me to get this device added to my isy correctly? Does anyone have any experience with this particular smoke detector?

I ran into the same issues.

For reasons I can't figure out- I followed all of the steps to get it set up; and had to wait about a day - and then the smoke detectors randomly started responding.

Every time thereafter - if I had to restart the ISY, it took about an hour before the smoke detectors would begin responding again. Or should I say about an hour before ISY would recognize them?

Mikeiud,

I would have been happy to submit a ticket on this.  However, after a few hours of frustration with the Smoke Detector, I decided that it wasn't worth my time.  I returned it back to the store.  I think I am going to look/stick with an INSTEON solution for this.  Since purchasing my ISY and using it with my INSTEON devices.  I have had nothing but success and I'm very happy with the combination.

With that in mind, It wasn't until recently that I have decided to purchased and install the z wave module for the ISY.  I have installed a z wave lock (schlage) and after a few hours of tinkering got it to work properly.  The point that I am trying to make here is that if I am going to have to tinker with z wave devices for hours at a time to get it to work properly, I'm not so sure that I am going to like the addition of the z wave module to my ISY.  I guess you can say that I am a spoiled brat who has grown to appreciate the error free experiences and great support that I have had with INSTEON and my Universal Devices ISY994ir/Pro.

I had to read your initial post a few times because it made no sense to me. In one line you indicate you purchased the Z-Wave enabled One Link Smokes. Later you indicate you installed the Z-Wave module? If you had no repeaters in your system I highly doubt these smokes were going to operate as you hoped.

Lots of people including myself bag on Insteon from time to time when warranted. But, based on many sites and forums Z-Wave is no more robust or better than Insteon. At first blush Z-Wave is actually worse in RF range and capability. The fact so many people use this product with zero feed back makes me shake my head.

Its like a newer version of X-10!?1?

I know there are newer devices which offer so called immediate feed back for their state. But, Insteon has offered this since day one and didn't have to offer three generations to get it right. Now with the latest Z-Wave Plus let the games begin! All in all I see no performance gains with Z-Wave but do contend they offer much more products in price ranges for the masses.

I believe there will be great strides in the next 5.XX release which will make this whole enrollment and handshake for Z-wave much more robust. At the current time reviewing countless threads the Z-Wave platform needs more work.

I agree with you Insteon by default simply works if all of the basic are in placed and followed.

I use both Insteon and Zwave. Personally I think Insteon is the better of the 2 when I weigh the pros and cons of each. With that said however, I do not think you can go wrong with either protocol. It's easy to become jaded when you have a bunch of one protocol and setting up new devices is a cake walk. However to start out with Insteon with just a couple of device, you could run into the same frustrations. I think Insteon is better for the beginner because of how it links and talks to other devices. With that said, if you have a strong network for both, you can't go wrong with either protocol.

Not to start a holly war or something, but my take on fire - replace your smoke detectors with 12V (2 or 4 wire) and tie them up to your security system (ELK, DSC or Honeywell). That way you'll get UL listed fire alarm system which would be fully supervised and have it's own battery backup.

Add heat/rate of rise detectors where smokes can't operate (attic, garage, utility room)

I am having the same problem.  The First Alert adds without a problem.  Then after a few minutes it quits responding.  It's about 15-20' from the ISY 994i.   I tried several times to exclude and re-add but still not working.

I will correct my comment above.  The Heal seems to work fine.  It's when I click on "Query" that it disconnects.  I'm also not getting anything in the status field.
