Suddenly lost all communication

Recommended Posts

Hello all

Everything was working just fine until I began getting house wide communication issues...

By restarting my ISY99i *( with 3.3.10 firmware) communication has intermittently returned once or twice but for the most part, I get "unable to communicate" errors with every single device on my network..

It sounded like a broken PLM so I replaced it with a new one and tried to restore Links as per instruction manual...

1) power down the ISY99i {same for the older ISY99i} and PLM.

2) Then power up the PLM first and let it completely initialize.

3) Then power up the ISY99i so the new PLMs ID is detected.

4) Then use the Restore Modem (PLM) from the drop down menu.

However is still don't work...

Nothing has been changed - no new appliances etc

everything was fine for years and then all communication all went south...

I am using 3 access points - they pass the 4 tap test...

I CAN log into the control page of my ISY as usual -

I even plugged in a Dual Band Light Module in the same plug as the PLM and it still cant communicate with it

Please help thanks

I had to read your initial reply a few times as it didn't make sense to me.

1. Do you have a 99 or 994? Because you started off saying you have a 99 then later state you have a 994?

2. If you perform the 4 tap (beacon) test initiated by the PLM. Do the AP's acknowledge the beacon test?

Its an isy99i sorry for the confusion

I'll have to try the the 4 tap initiated by the PLM and get back with you ( good idea though - that will tell us if the PLM is communicating with the APs)

No worries just wanted to make sure what hardware we are dealing with.

1. Please post up the *About* for the 99 Series Controller.

2. How many devices do you have?

4. If you manually operate all Insteon devices do they all operate correctly?

5. Can you please run a compare link table several times and post up the results.

6. Are there many red (!) marks to the left of the device tree? If so, if you query them what happens and can you control them after?

7. Have you tried to (right click) on a device in the device tree and select *Restore Device*?

8. Any battery operated devices with a green 1010 will need to be *Write update device* one at a time. You will need to push on the set button for any of those devices (one at a time)

will attach ASAP

2. How many devices do you have?

30 or so

4. If you manually operate all Insteon devices do they all operate correctly?

yes

5. Can you please run a compare link table several times and post up the results.

how is this specifically done?

6. Are there many red (!) marks to the left of the device tree? If so, if you query them what happens and can you control them after?

yes on all devices

7. Have you tried to (right click) on a device in the device tree and select *Restore Device*?

yes it didn't help

8. Any battery operated devices with a green 1010 will need to be *Write update device* one at a time. You will need to push on the set button for any of those devices (one at a time)

no battery devices

When you have time can you please delete one device from the ISY. Once that is done can you hard reset the specific device. Once done add it back into the ISY Series Controller and report back if the device can be seen and controlled via the Admin Console.

Please note you should perform the 4 tap (beacon) test from the PLM to the AP's when you return from work.

All APs Passed the 3 tap test generated from PLM

Take one device from the Admin Console and delete it. Once deleted hard reset it and then add it back into the ISY Series Controller.

Report back if this single device is visible from the Admin Console which reflects its true state when activated manually and remotely from the software console.

YES the "deleted/reset/added back" device  does reflect true state when activated manually and remotely from the admin console

Well you really have two choices from here. You can try to perform another PLM restore and see if the devices are seen.

Or delete all of the devices and add them back in and selecting (delete existing) links. Going this route cuts down on the hard reset process.

But I favor doing a factory hard reset when something like this ( system wide ) issue has appeared. This ensures any corrupted devices are brought back to a default OEM state.

wow - what do you think caused this issue? was is it caused by a bad device? I have over 40 devices and about 30 programs controlling them - if i don't rename the devices exactly the same, my programs wont function properly - this is a real pain   what if the problem comes back?

ARRRGH - i just lost communication to that device that we did the hard reset on!!!!

I'm back to square one!!!

what is causing this problem to keep coming back?

Soft reboot the ISY and report back.

"system is in safe mode because it cant communicate with PLM - recheck connections reboot PLM - likely defective PLM"

Well since the PLM is new. I would unplug the PLM and remove power from the ISY.

Wait 30 seconds and plug the PLM back into the outlet. Wait another 30 seconds and apply power to the ISY.

Ensure the Ethernet cable is secure and properly connected.

Report back.

the system works a while - i assume its trying to write to the PLM - but communication errors pop up for virtually all devices - then it's back to square one - same issues as posted above

BTW - I have done this countless times

First thing I would ask you to do is swap out the Ethernet cable. Next measure the line voltage where the PLM is plugged into and report back.

already changed ethernet cable this morning

Line votlage = 120

I suspect the next possible area would be a bad SD card. But I would probably unplug as many electrical devices in the home and see if COM's are restored.

Is the PLM / ISY void of any noise inducing electronics?

where would the SD card be?

I have noise filters on everything i can think of - just unplugged several potential sources of noise - no improvement

oh - i see there is an SD card in the ISY - can i try to replace it - what's the proper protocol to do this?

Before you even go down that route when you have more time I would encourage you to unplug as many things in the home. This will at least eliminate as many possible noise makers / signal suckers in the home.

You can not simply leave an item powered off it has to be unplugged.

Once you do that please confirm the PLM is coupled via the 4 tap beacon test from both directions. Normally if a SD card is bad you would have access issues which appears to not be the case here. As a random suggestion can you please ensure any anti virus, firewall is turned off.

Go to the control panel and clear the java cache and report back.
