BelWave Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Hello, So, as the topic states I seem to have lost all Z-Wave communications after upgrading. Ended up trying every option I could find in the ISY GUI including "Advanced - Factory Rest Z-Wave Dongle" Everything is gone now and I'm trying to start over by adding all my Z Wave devices back in one by one. I have been able to add only one wall outlet back in so far. I purchased a couple new devices and they all have been able to be added without any trouble. I've tried "Remove/Exclude a Z-Wave Device" multiple times with no success. My Trane XL624 Thermostat has an "Exclude from Z-Wave Network" option, but that fails too. Anyone know how to factory reset the XL624? The "Restore Defaults" under its advanced service options does not clear the Z-Wave settings and still shows a "node 11". Feels a lot like Hotel California....once you check in you can never check out! Any suggestions? Happy to provide whatever details or screenshots needed to help get my Z-Wave working again! Thanks, Brad
Teken Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Hello Brad, It seems there was a lot of work done with very little positive results. Have you tried to restore from a good known back up instead? Since this is so critical I would urge you to create a service request so UDI can remote in and see what is going on.
BelWave Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 Hello Teken, Yes, before I upgraded I made a backup. Tried restoring from the backup and all the Z-Wave devices are listed again, but none of them are reachable. When I run the "Synchronize Nodes" they all disappear. Brad

BelWave Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 I did power cycle the ISY994i a few times at various moments during my attempts to recover the Z-Wave devices. Is there a "best practice" procedure that is recommended? For example: (1) Power cycle or Software reboot ISY (2) Z-Wave - Advanced - Factory Reset Z-Wave Dongle (3) File - Restore - ISY (choose backup prior to upgrade) (4) Power cycle or Software reboot ISY again (5) Then what??? (6) Then what??? Does such a documented procedure exist? What is the best practice? Brad

The ISY Series Controller becomes unresponsive in terms of remote access. I therefor perform a hard reboot (remove power) from the system and wait about 30 seconds. Once the time has passed I apply power again and access is restored. I can't say why your Z-Wave devices were not listed after the upgrade as I don't have any Z-Wave devices. If after the hard reboot and the system still appears inoperable I would follow up with a service request. To be clear you did in fact down load the correct Z-Wave firmware??
Michel Kohanim Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Hi BelWave, I am so very sorry to hear. Did you ever do a Z-Wave | Advanced | Factory Reset? I hope not ... If you have ever backed up your Z-Wave dongle (Z-Wave | Tools | Backup), then the process is as follows: 1. File | Restore ISY 2. Z-Wave | Tools | Restore With kind regards, Michel
BelWave Posted May 2, 2015 Author Posted May 2, 2015 Hey Michel, Yep, did a Z-Wave | Advanced | Factory Rest. This was don after trying several other things "Heal" etc with no success. I can add new devices, but none (except one outlet) of the existing Z-Wave devices seem to respond to being removed or added. Is there a fix to this or am I going to have to start replacing all my Z-Wave devices with new ones!!!????!!! Thanks, Brad
Teken Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Brad, As a quick test I would suggest you roll back to a previous firmware. Once done check to see if your old devices are operational. If not, perform the restore outlined by Michel for the ISY then the Z-Wave portion. Report back success / failure . . . Have you created a service request with UDI since? Michel Kohanim Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Hi Brad, As Teken suggested, if you have a backup of your Z-Wave dongle, then you can restore them all. The main question for me is: do you have connectivity with devices that you are adding now? With kind regards, Michel
BelWave Posted May 5, 2015 Author Posted May 5, 2015 Hello Michel - Teken, Looks like I can't find any Z-Wave dongle backups in any of my ISY backups. I wasn't aware the Z-Wave devices were not included in the ISY backup unless the Z-Wave dongle was backed up first followed by backing up the ISY. Today I was able to backup the Z-Wave dongle then the ISY then restore the ISY and Z-Wave dongle. So, I know that works as it should...apparently I just never backed up the Z-Wave dongle ever in the past. Yes, any new Z-Wave devices are able to be added and work as they should. I just can't get any of the existing Z-Wave devices to be excluded or included again. For example I went to Home Depot and bought two Leviton plug in devices....a three prong appliance on/off module and a two prong dimmer module. Both added and work perfectly. I took the dimmer module and plugged it in a wall outlet near my Trane XL624 thermostat and was able to get the XL624 to "exclude" itself via the thermostat onscreen menu. So far I can't seem to get any of my Z-Wave wall switches or wall outlets to exclude/include. I can only assume that the XL624 is working now because that particular device has a way to exclude itself from the Z-Wave network. Once that succeeded I was able to include it back into the ISY. So, how can I force a wall outlet or wall switch to reset or forget that it is part of a Z-Wave network, so that I can re-add it back in? Thanks, Brad
Teken Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Hello Brad, Could you hard reset one of the older units as a test? Once reset attempt to add it back in to the ISY. Ideals are peaceful - History is violent
Michel Kohanim Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Hi Brad, Can you please post back the model number of one of the devices that you cannot include/exclude? With kind regards, Michel
BelWave Posted May 5, 2015 Author Posted May 5, 2015 Hello Michel, Yes, the wall switches are GE 45609 (ZW4001) and the wall outlets are GE 45605 (ZW1001) As a rule of thumb, have Z-Wave users found that Z-Wave performance of one brand is better than another? e.g. GE vs. Leviton? Just curious because it seems I can place the two new Leviton plug in modules have much better range than any of the GE wall switches or wall outlets. Thanks! Brad
Michel Kohanim Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Hi Brad, Yes indeed GE/JASCO switches (not dimmers) are a little temperamental especially when excluding or resetting them. With kind regards, Michel
BelWave Posted May 6, 2015 Author Posted May 6, 2015 Hi Brad, Yes indeed GE/JASCO switches (not dimmers) are a little temperamental especially when excluding or resetting them. With kind regards, Michel Ok, then before I add too many of them I'm removing all the GE Z-Wave products from the system. Might as well...they don't work now anyway! Leviton is a safer bet or is there a different brand better than Leviton? Brad
Michel Kohanim Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Hi Brad, GE dimmers are good. Only some of the switches misbehave. Leviton is good but please note the multi button ones are not yet supported. Do you have any INSTEON devices as well? With kind regards, Michel
BelWave Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Hello Michel, Yes, the majority of my switches/dimmers/etc are Insteon. I've really only needed Z-Wave for the door locks and thermostats. The older Insteon Venstar were less than reliable and the new Insteon thermostat doesn't work with heat pumps...of which I have four. I've ordered three Aeotec by Aeon Labs ZW074-A Z-Wave Plus 4-IN-1 Gen 5 Multisensors the other day. The idea is to see if I can get a couple of them to work back to back and reach out to my metal garage. The Insteon light switches work to the garage, but I need to control my Z-Wave door locks out there! Any plans for a device that can forward Z-Wave data over Insteon? Thanks, Brad
Jimbo.Automates Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Brad, I'm not sure if those MultiSensors can be repeaters, they might if they are plugged in, but probably not if on batteries. I have one that is plugged in so I can check when I am home. Also, FYI, the are releasing a new version of the MultiSensor very soon that is supposed to be a lot better.
Michel Kohanim Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Hi Brad, Unfortunately it's impossible to forward Z-Wave data to INSTEON. This said, you can use Programs in ISY to do things to INSTEON based on Z-Wave signals. With kind regards, Michel
BelWave Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 Brad, I'm not sure if those MultiSensors can be repeaters, they might if they are plugged in, but probably not if on batteries. I have one that is plugged in so I can check when I am home. Also, FYI, the are releasing a new version of the MultiSensor very soon that is supposed to be a lot better. Hello Jimbo, Yah, I was concerned about the battery vs. USB power and if that would affect the repeater functionality. USPS tracking seems to indicate I might see them arrive today if not certainly by tomorrow. Getting power to them via the USB port would be my preference as the long term solution, but before I went to that trouble I'm hoping they will repeat Z-Wave signals while using battery power. Good info to know about a newer MultiSensor coming out. Think I stumbled across that somewhere...it's a different brand though, correct? You happen to know the make/model off hand by chance? Thanks! Brad
BelWave Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 Never mind...found it! http://aeotec.com/z-wave-sensor
Jimbo.Automates Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Never mind...found it! http://aeotec.com/z-wave-sensor Yes, that is it. Also, I checked my current one and it does not seem to support being a repeater even when plugged in. I have the older one, not the Gen5 version, and I think I remember the Gen5 has some issue with reporting all states in the ISY.
BelWave Posted May 12, 2015 Author Posted May 12, 2015 Yah, I confirmed the multi-sensors do NOT act as repeaters. The good news is www.thesmartesthouse.com was very quick to take them back and even go ahead and ship out the Gen5 sirens today as an advance exchange. Very good customer service from them. I received a new Z-Wave expansion card for one of my KwikSet door locks. Planning on swapping out one of the old cards with this new one and see if I can get it to be included again. Brad
