Reading a PG&E Smart Meter

I recently enabled my ISY994ZS to connect with the PG&E Smart Meter at my residence (Thank you, Michel!).  I am confused by some of the readings that I get, and don't get, from it, to wit:

 

I wrote a notification to periodically display all the various options available in the Utility-Meter drop-down list for variable substitution.  Not all of the parameters return a value as expected, only a few do so.  For example, none of the status flags return a value; the kWh for Today and Yesterday both return zero.  See the attached file PGE Smart Meter Report.txt.

 

The display in the Dashboard shows costs for Today, Yesterday, and Month; the kilowatt hours for Today and Yesterday are zero, only Month shows a value.  The kWh information must be there, as it is shown on the graph if you click on the ? icon.  This is shown in the attached thumbnail Smart Meter, Dashboard.jpg.

 

I know that the lack of pricing and tier information is probably a shortcoming of PG&E's implementation and I will query them about that.  But should not more of the Kwh data summations be available from the ISY?

 

Has any one else noticed these anomalies?  Probably I am doing something wrong.

My reply has nothing to do with your original question so I do apologise. 

 

I wanted to know how exactly do you intend to use the information you have, being connected to the smart meter? I am trying to wrap my brain around what can be done in the ISY using this method?

Hi Craig,

 

1. Billing information is not available in substitution variables

2. Today and Yesterday is what the meter reports. The charts you see for Today/Yesterday are ISY calculations (current total kWh - last total kWh). In ideal situation where the meter actually reports Today/Yesterday, what ISY calculates should be very close to what meter reports

An example:  We are on a time-of-use billing schedule and I am developing a set of programs that notifies me about excess usage during peak periods - currently 12N to 6pm on Mon-Fri

Please confirm my understanding if I am not correct. So your plans are create program(s) that monitors the power / KWH for a specific period of time due to the ToU billing method you are on.

 

Should the house be consuming above and beyond what ever value you have set. You will instruct random Insteon controlled devices to be turned off etc correct?

Yes, that is essentially what I plan, except perhaps for your use of the word random.  I may turn off selected devices with the ISY (or lower a thermostat set point), but more importantly will send an email or iMessage to myself and/or Joan as  a reminder to shut things down manually; or maybe blink a big red light!

 

This is, obviously, a work in progress.
